Canvas wall art POD economics
Canvas is POD's highest-AOV category:
- 11x14: $35-65 retail
- 16x20: $55-95
- 24x36: $95-165
- 30x40: $135-225
- Multi-panel sets: $150-400+
Margin: 55-70%. Photography-driven (custom photos from customer's library). Gift-heavy (pet portraits, family photos, wedding photos).
Step-by-step setup
- Decide on size variants. Standard sizes: 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24, 24x36, 30x40 inches. Portrait and landscape orientations. Start with 4-6 popular sizes.
- Install Print It My Way. Canvas designer with photo upload, crop, and quality checks is built in. Install from the Shopify App Store.
- Set per-size minimum resolution. 8x10 at 300 DPI needs 2400x3000 px. 24x36 needs 7200x10800 px. Set per-variant DPI minimums so customers can't upload tiny photos for huge canvases.
- Add gallery wrap or framed options. Gallery-wrapped (image wraps around the edge) is standard. Framed (matted or framed canvas) is premium upsell.
- Configure crop tool with aspect ratio lock. Each canvas size has a specific aspect ratio. Lock the crop tool to that ratio so customers can't upload a wrong-shape photo for the variant.
- Add multi-panel option (premium). Split-canvas (single image across 2-5 separate canvases) is premium positioning. 30-50% AOV uplift vs single canvas.
- Test photo quality warnings. Upload a too-small photo and verify the warning fires before checkout. Block hard at 50% of target DPI, warn at 75%, OK above.
Canvas size variants
Standard print sizes (in inches):
- 8x10 (small, gift-friendly): $25-40
- 11x14 (popular): $35-55
- 16x20 (popular larger): $55-85
- 18x24 (large standard): $75-115
- 24x36 (gallery): $95-155
- 30x40 (statement): $135-200
Portrait and landscape orientations of each. Plus square (12x12, 16x16, 20x20, 24x24).
Gallery wrap vs framed
Gallery wrap: Image wraps 1.25-1.5 in around all sides of the stretcher frame. No matting. Modern look. Standard POD canvas.
Framed: Canvas + wooden frame around it. Traditional / formal look. $15-35 upcharge.
Matted (premium): Print mounted on canvas board with mat and frame. Most formal. Premium positioning.
Photo quality is the make-or-break
Canvas is unforgiving on low-resolution photos. A blurry 16x20 canvas is the #1 refund driver in canvas POD. Set minimum DPI strictly per size:
- 8x10 → 2400x3000 px minimum (300 DPI)
- 16x20 → 4800x6000 px minimum
- 24x36 → 7200x10800 px minimum
Warn below target, block hard at 50% of target.
Multi-panel split canvas
Premium offering: single image split across 2-5 separate canvases for wall display. Typical configurations:
- 2-panel: 24x36 total (two 12x36 canvases)
- 3-panel: 36x24 (three 12x24)
- 5-panel staggered: dramatic statement piece
30-50% AOV uplift vs single canvas. Requires the personalizer to split the print file correctly across panels.
Canvas POD pricing
11x14: cost $14, retail $35-55. 16x20: cost $22, retail $55-85. 24x36: cost $42, retail $95-155. Frame upcharge $15-35. Multi-panel +30-50% over single-canvas total.

What's the highest-AOV POD product category?
Canvas wall art. Average single-canvas order $55-95, large canvas $95-165, multi-panel sets $150-400+. Highest absolute-dollar margin of standard POD categories.
What's the minimum photo resolution for a 16x20 canvas?
4800x6000 px (300 DPI at 16x20). Anything below 2400x3000 will print soft. Set DPI minimums per variant in your designer.
Gallery wrap or framed canvas, which sells better?
Gallery wrap is the default (modern look, lower cost). Framed adds $15-35 and reads as more formal: works for older demographics and traditional positioning.
Should I offer multi-panel canvas splits?
Yes for premium positioning. 30-50% AOV uplift vs single canvas. Requires the designer to split the print file correctly across panels: verify with your POD partner.
What's the #1 cause of canvas POD refunds?
Low-resolution photo that prints blurry at large canvas size. Strict per-variant DPI minimums and clear warnings during upload prevent this.
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers most small stores; paid plans unlock higher order volume, advanced features like Cart Transform per-character pricing, premium fonts, and white-glove support. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does Print It My Way take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.
Does Print It My Way work with Shopify Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus?
Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Some advanced features like Cart Transform (per-character pricing) and B2B company accounts require Shopify Plus, but the core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners. The customer's personalization data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives the print files automatically.
Does Print It My Way support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
