Sublimation print file output
Sublimation printing (the standard process for full-color photo mugs) requires:
- Format: PNG with transparent background (the white parts of the mug stay white)
- Resolution: 300 DPI at print dimensions (9×4 inches for an 11oz mug = 2700×1200 pixels)
- Color profile: sRGB (not CMYK — sublimation uses RGB workflow)
- Bleed: 0.125 inches (3mm) for full-wrap designs to prevent white edges if alignment is off
- File naming: include the order number for production matching
PIMW Product Personalizer generates this automatically. Customily has the deepest POD-integrated workflow where Printful/Printify receive the file via their app SDK directly. Other apps vary — verify before launching by placing a test order and reviewing the print file.
Field setups for common mug occasions
Whichever app you pick, check that it can build the fields your best-selling mugs need:
- Mother's Day and Father's Day: one photo upload, a short message field and a gift-wrap option. Demand for both runs from March to June, so have the product live before then.
- Grandparent gifts: several photo slots (one per grandchild), a field for the grandparent name ("Nana", "Grandpa") and a dedication line.
- Pet mugs: photo upload, a pet-name field and, if you offer it, a style dropdown (photo, cartoon, watercolor, line art). Repeatable fields help when the customer has more than one pet.
- Memorial mugs: photo upload, name and dates fields, and a longer quote field. Send a proof before printing, since a mistake here is hard to put right.
- Corporate orders: logo upload plus a way to collect many employee names in one order, with per-option or tiered pricing.
Price the extras (additional photos, gift wrap, rush production) as paid options instead of separate variants.

What's the best Shopify personalizer for mug and drinkware stores?
For custom mugs, tumblers, wine glasses, and drinkware in 2026, PIMW Product Personalizer ranks first by live canvas with full-wrap mug preview, 35+ Google Fonts including the script fonts photo-mug buyers prefer, photo upload with HEIC support and DPI validation, Cart Transform pricing for photo upload fees, and flat $7.99-$24.99/month pricing. For POD-deep mug workflows with Printful and Printify, Customily at $49/month plus tiered per-item fees per customily.com/pricing is the category leader. Zakeke's 3D rotation works for premium drinkware but the 1.7-1.9% per-item fee per zakeke.zendesk.com is overkill for typical 2D mug personalization.
What mug-specific features matter most?
For mug and drinkware personalization: (1) full-wrap canvas showing the design across the front and back of the mug as the customer designs; (2) photo upload with HEIC support (iPhone default format), automatic resize to 300 DPI at the print dimensions, and DPI warnings before checkout to prevent pixelated prints; (3) sublimation print file output as PNG with sRGB color profile and transparent background; (4) 35+ font library balancing script (photo-gift feel) and sans-serif (modern minimal); (5) Cart Transform pricing for photo-upload upcharges; (6) wrap-around text effects so customers can curve text along the mug shape.
How do I generate sublimation print files for mugs?
Sublimation print files for mugs need: PNG format with transparent background, 300 DPI at the print dimensions (typically 9×4 inches for an 11oz mug = 2700×1200 pixels), sRGB color profile (not CMYK), and an optional 0.125-inch bleed for full-wrap prints. PIMW Product Personalizer's production tab generates this automatically. Customily has the deepest POD-integrated mug workflow with Printful/Printify mug templates auto-mapped. Zakeke's print file output varies by template.
What's the best app for photo mugs?
For photo mugs (customer uploads a photo, it renders on the mug), PIMW Product Personalizer is the strongest flat-fee option: HEIC support, mobile camera-roll upload, automatic crop and resize, DPI warnings before checkout, full-wrap preview. Pricing: $7.99-$24.99/month flat. Customily handles photo mugs deeply with mature template library at $49/mo + per-item fees. Teeinblue offers AI-powered photo variation features. For straight photo mug stores at any volume, PIMW Product Personalizer's flat fee scales best.
How much does mug personalization software cost?
Flat-fee: PIMW Product Personalizer ($7.99-$24.99/mo), Hulk Product Options (From $8.90/mo per apps.shopify.com/product-options-by-hulkapps-1, no canvas), Easify (free + paid tiers). Subscription + per-item: Customily ($49/mo + tiered per-item fees). Percentage-fee: Zakeke ($29.99/mo + 1.7-1.9% per item per zakeke.zendesk.com), Kickflip. At $5,000/month in custom-mug sales, PIMW Product Personalizer Basic costs $7.99/mo flat ($120/year). Customily costs $49+/mo subscription. Zakeke costs ~$122/mo with the percentage fee added.
How do I handle the wrap-around design on a mug?
Most mug personalizers support a single wraparound design zone that maps to the full mug surface (typically 9×4 inches print area for a standard 11oz mug). PIMW Product Personalizer handles this with a canvas that shows the design wrapping correctly in the preview. For two-handed mug designs (separate front and back zones with the handle in between), configure two design zones in the personalizer — most apps support this. Customily has the deepest mug template library if you don't want to manually map zones. Sublimation print output is one continuous PNG covering the full wrap.
Is PIMW Product Personalizer free to install?
Yes. PIMW Product Personalizer is free to install from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan includes 1 personalizer template on up to 2 personalized products; paid plans (Basic $7.99, Pro $13.99, Unlimited $24.99 per month, each with a 3-day free trial) raise the template, step, and product assignment limits. Every plan includes unlimited custom orders with no per-order fees. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does PIMW Product Personalizer take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.
Does PIMW Product Personalizer work with Shopify Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus?
Yes. PIMW Product Personalizer works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. The core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does PIMW Product Personalizer slow down my Shopify store?
No. PIMW Product Personalizer uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide.
Does PIMW Product Personalizer work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. PIMW Product Personalizer writes the customer's personalization to standard Shopify line item properties, which Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand apps read. The data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives it with the order.
Does PIMW Product Personalizer support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
