What is a custom ornament maker?
A custom ornament maker is a Shopify app that lets customers design personalized Christmas ornaments with family name + year, pet photo, or baby's first Christmas. The Shopify standard is Print It My Way (free to install). Ornament AOV: $14-28, Q4 peak = 70% of annual revenue.
Step-by-step setup
- Install Print It My Way (free). From the Shopify App Store.
- Pick ornament materials. Acrylic (clear, modern), ceramic (classic), metal (premium), wood (rustic), photo ornament. Start with acrylic + ceramic + photo.
- Upload mockups on tree. Show ornament hanging on a Christmas tree. Lifestyle converts better than studio-flat.
- Configure shape variants. Round 3.5 in, oval 3x4 in, square, snowflake, star. Each has its own canvas.
- Add family name + year fields. 'The Smiths 2026' is the #1 ornament personalization. Make these prominent.
- Add pet ornament + baby's first Christmas flows. Pet photo with name + dates. Baby name + birth date + 'First Christmas'.
- Build for Q4 peak (Nov-Dec = 70% of annual). Have catalog, ads, sample-verified production ready by October 1. Add rush production option for December panic buyers.
Ornament materials
- Acrylic: Clear or printed. Modern. Most common. $3-5 cost, $14-18 retail.

- Metal: Aluminum / steel. Premium. $6-9 cost, $22-32 retail.
- Wood: Rustic. $4-7 cost, $16-22 retail.

Most-popular ornament personalization

- Pet photo + pet name
- Baby's first Christmas (baby name + year + photo)
- Couple wedding / 'First Married Christmas'
- Memorial: 'In Loving Memory' + year of passing
- Milestone (first home, retirement, new job)
Pre-built templates dominate
Ornament buyers arrive with a gift in mind and not much design skill, so 5-10 pre-built templates per product end up driving 60-70% of orders. The blank canvas rarely gets used.
Q4 production capacity
Q4 demand runs 10-20x baseline week-to-week, POD partner lead times stretch, and blank ornament inventory can stock out. Tell customers clearly, and add a rush upcharge for last-minute orders.
Custom ornament pricing
Acrylic: $14-18. Ceramic: $18-25. Metal: $22-32. Photo ornament: $18-26. 65-80% margin. POD's most profitable per-unit product.

$14-28. Highest-margin POD product (65-80%). Q4 = 70% of annual revenue.
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does Print It My Way take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.

Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners. The customer's personalization data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives the print files automatically.
Does Print It My Way support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
