POD affiliate economics
- 10-20% commission paid only on completed sales
- Lower customer acquisition cost than paid ads (no upfront ad spend)
- Scales with affiliate network growth
- Affiliates do the marketing work; you do fulfillment
Drawback: 6-12 months for meaningful scale. Recruiting takes time. Pays back over years once established.
Step-by-step setup
- Pick affiliate platform. Refersion, GoAffPro, Tapfiliate, ReferralCandy, Shopify Collabs. Each integrates with Shopify.
- Install Print It My Way. POD designer flow converts affiliate-driven traffic. Install from the Shopify App Store.
- Set commission structure. 10-20% commission typical for POD. 15% sweet spot. Higher for premium products (justifying higher commission).
- Build affiliate landing page. Dedicated 'become an affiliate' page explaining program, commission, terms.
- Set cookie window. 30-60 days standard. Customer clicks affiliate link, has 30-60 days to convert and credit the affiliate.
- Recruit affiliates. Bloggers in your niche, influencers, repeat customers, content creators. Personal outreach more effective than passive signup.
- Provide creative assets. Product images, banner ads, copy templates. Removes friction for affiliates to promote.
- Pay reliably. Monthly payouts via PayPal / Stripe. Late or unreliable payment kills affiliate motivation.
Platform comparison
- Refersion: Most popular POD platform. $89-249/month. Comprehensive features.
- GoAffPro: Affordable ($24-49/month). Good for smaller stores.
- Tapfiliate: Enterprise-friendly. $89-149/month.
- Shopify Collabs: Built into Shopify Plus. Influencer-focused.
Commission structure
Standard POD: 10-20% on completed sale. Considerations:
- Higher for premium products (justified by higher AOV)
- Tiered rates for high-volume affiliates
- Bonus for first-time conversions
- Recurring commission for subscription POD (if applicable)
Recruiting affiliates
- Repeat customers (loyal already)
- Niche bloggers (alignment with product)
- Small influencers (less expensive than paid sponsorships)
- Content creators (YouTube, podcast)
- Existing affiliate marketplaces (ShareASale, etc.)
Personal outreach more effective than passive signup forms.
Provide creative assets
Lower friction for affiliates to promote:
- Product images (multiple angles)
- Banner ads (multiple sizes)
- Copy templates (email, social, blog)
- Discount codes per affiliate
- Tracking links
FTC compliance
Affiliates must disclose paid relationships. Include disclosure requirements in affiliate agreement. Non-compliance affects your brand reputation and exposes affiliate (and potentially you) to FTC action.

What's standard POD affiliate commission?
10-20% on completed sale. 15% is the sweet spot. Premium positioned products can offer higher (20-25%) to recruit serious affiliates.
Which affiliate platform is best for POD?
Refersion for mid-to-large stores ($89-249/month, comprehensive). GoAffPro for smaller stores ($24-49/month, value option). Pick based on size and feature needs.
How long does it take to build a profitable POD affiliate program?
6-12 months for meaningful scale. First 100 affiliates take longest; later acquisition gets easier as program builds reputation.
What cookie window for POD affiliates?
30-60 days standard. Longer windows reward affiliates more but cost margin on delayed conversions. 30 days is the common compromise.
Do I need to vet affiliates?
Yes for premium positioned brands. Spam-driven affiliates can damage brand reputation. Manual approval of new affiliates worth the time investment.
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers most small stores; paid plans unlock higher order volume, advanced features like Cart Transform per-character pricing, premium fonts, and white-glove support. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does Print It My Way take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.
Does Print It My Way work with Shopify Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus?
Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Some advanced features like Cart Transform (per-character pricing) and B2B company accounts require Shopify Plus, but the core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners. The customer's personalization data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives the print files automatically.
Does Print It My Way support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
