Font licensing is the part POD stores get wrong
Two licensing models that work for POD:
- SIL Open Font License (OFL): Google Fonts, free, includes commercial use
- Commercial purchase: MyFonts, Creative Market, foundries. Pay once, license for commercial use including POD.
Avoid:
- 'Free for personal use' fonts from random sites, not licensed for POD products
- Fonts ripped from movie posters or branded materials
- Trial fonts without confirmed commercial license
Step-by-step setup
- Identify your font needs. Curated 4-6 fonts per product, plus a small library for hand-uploaded font customization. Don't try to license 500 fonts.
- Start with Google Fonts. All Google Fonts are SIL OFL licensed for commercial use including POD. Free. Cover most needs.
- Consider Adobe Fonts if you have CC. Adobe Creative Cloud subscription includes Adobe Fonts (typekit). Commercial use included in subscription.
- Install Print It My Way. POD designer with curated font library is built in. Install from the Shopify App Store.
- Verify font licenses before commercial use. Some 'free' fonts have non-commercial licenses. Always check the EULA before using on POD products.
- Buy premium fonts for specific positioning. MyFonts, Creative Market, Fontspring for premium positioning. Decorative scripts, monogram fonts, display fonts.
- Store the font files securely. Keep purchased font files with the license documentation. Print It My Way's font upload supports your custom commercially-licensed fonts.
Google Fonts (free)
1500+ fonts, all SIL OFL or Apache 2.0 licensed. Commercial use included. Most POD stores start here.
Strong categories: clean sans-serifs (Inter, Montserrat, Outfit), classic serifs (Playfair Display, Cormorant), display fonts (Bebas Neue, Anton).
Adobe Fonts (CC subscription)
30,000+ fonts. Included in Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Commercial use included. Strong on professional typography.
MyFonts ($)
Largest commercial font marketplace. Per-font purchase. $30-300 per font for commercial license. Premium positioning.
Creative Market ($)
Designer marketplace including fonts. $15-50 per font typically. Strong on trendy display and decorative fonts.
POD font curation principles
- Offer 4-6 fonts per product, not 50
- Cover 4 categories: clean sans-serif, classic serif, casual script, bold display
- Test readability at print size before committing
- Verify commercial license before launch

Are Google Fonts free for POD commercial use?
Yes. All Google Fonts are SIL OFL or Apache 2.0 licensed, both of which permit commercial use including on POD products.
What about Adobe Fonts on POD?
Adobe Fonts (formerly Typekit) commercial use is included in Creative Cloud subscription. Verify the specific font's license. Some Adobe Fonts have additional restrictions.
Can I use 'free for personal use' fonts on POD products?
No. 'Personal use' license excludes commercial / resale use. Using these on POD products violates the license and exposes you to legal risk.
How many fonts should I offer customers per product?
4-6. More overwhelms decision-making. Cover four categories: clean sans-serif, classic serif, casual script, bold display.
Where do I buy premium POD fonts?
MyFonts ($30-300 per font), Creative Market ($15-50), Fontspring (commercial-license-friendly). Always verify the EULA covers POD / resale use before purchasing.

Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.

Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Some advanced features like Cart Transform (per-character pricing) and B2B company accounts require Shopify Plus, but the core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners.
