POD poster niches that win
Generic photo posters compete with everyone. Niche poster POD wins:
- Custom map posters: coordinates, neighborhood maps, star maps for night of significance
- Custom lyric posters: wedding songs, anniversary songs, first dance lyrics
- Custom illustration posters: pet illustrations, family portraits
- Vintage / aesthetic posters: retro aesthetic, college dorm positioning
Step-by-step setup
- Pick the poster categories. Standard photo poster, custom map / star map poster, lyric / quote poster, illustration poster. Each has different design flow.
- Install Print It My Way. Poster designer with photo upload and template support is built in. Install from the Shopify App Store.
- Choose paper variants. Matte (most popular), glossy (vibrant photos), museum / archival (premium). Most POD stores offer matte by default + museum as upsell.
- Set size variants. Standard poster sizes: 12x18, 18x24, 24x36 inches. Optional: 8x10 mini, 27x40 movie-poster size.
- Configure per-niche design flow. Map poster: customer enters city/coordinates → app generates map. Lyric poster: text-based template + customer fills in lyrics. Photo poster: customer uploads photo.
- Add framing upsell. Frame + matting upsell raises AOV significantly. Many POD posters ship rolled in a tube; framed at customer's home or as upsell + framing service.
- Test print quality per paper variant. Matte and museum paper print very differently. Order samples of each before launching.
Paper choice
- Matte: 170-200 gsm. No glare. Modern. Default for POD.
- Glossy: 200-250 gsm. Photo-vibrant. Slight glare.
- Museum / archival: 250-300 gsm cotton or rag paper. Premium. $5-15 upcharge.
Custom map posters
One of POD poster's strongest niches. Customer enters:
- City name or coordinates
- Date of significance (anniversary, wedding)
- Custom text (couple names, address)
- Map style (minimal, vintage, watercolor)
App generates the map. AOV $45-95 single, $75-145 framed.
Lyric / quote posters
Wedding song lyrics, first dance lyrics, anniversary songs. Text-based with decorative typography. Customer pastes lyrics, app formats. AOV $35-75 single, $65-115 framed.
Photo posters
Customer uploads photo, app prints at chosen size. Same DPI rules as canvas: set per-variant minimums (300 DPI). Lower AOV than canvas because posters lack the 3D substrate appeal.
Poster POD pricing
12x18 matte: cost $5, retail $18-28. 18x24 matte: cost $8, retail $28-42. 24x36 matte: cost $12, retail $42-65. Museum paper +$5-15. Framing +$25-65. Custom map premium +$15-30 over photo poster.

Matte or glossy poster paper for POD?
Matte is the default (no glare, modern look, broad appeal). Glossy for vibrant photo posters. Museum / archival paper as premium upsell.
What's the strongest POD poster niche?
Custom map posters and custom lyric posters. Both have personalization-as-the-product (the customer's coordinates or lyrics are inherently unique), which sustains higher AOV than generic photo posters.
Should posters ship rolled or framed?
Default: rolled in a tube (lower shipping cost, customer frames at home). Framed shipping is expensive, but framing is a high-margin upsell for premium positioning.
What's the minimum resolution for a 24x36 poster?
7200x10800 px at 300 DPI. Below 4800x7200 px and the poster will print visibly soft. Set strict per-variant DPI minimums.
Are POD posters seasonal?
Less than canvas. Custom map and lyric posters sell year-round (anniversary, wedding gifts). Aesthetic / dorm posters spike August-September (back-to-school).
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers most small stores; paid plans unlock higher order volume, advanced features like Cart Transform per-character pricing, premium fonts, and white-glove support. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does Print It My Way take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.
Does Print It My Way work with Shopify Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus?
Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Some advanced features like Cart Transform (per-character pricing) and B2B company accounts require Shopify Plus, but the core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners. The customer's personalization data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives the print files automatically.
Does Print It My Way support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
