Shopify vs Etsy for Personalization

Etsy is a marketplace with built-in personalization. Shopify is your own store. Different economics + control.

Etsy gives you shoppers on day one and a simple personalization box. Shopify gives you your own store, structured personalization fields and lower fees as you grow, but you have to bring the traffic. Most personalized-product sellers we talk to start on one and end up running both. The right choice depends on how complex your personalization is and where your buyers come from.

Personalization support

Etsy has a built-in "Add your personalization" box on listings. You write instructions ("Enter the name and date, separated by a comma") and set a character limit, and the buyer types into one free-text field. It's simple, and it works for a single name. It gets messy when you need a name, a date, a font choice and a photo, because all of that ends up in one box in whatever format the buyer chooses.

On Shopify, personalization comes from apps. With PIMW Product Personalizer you can add separate fields for each piece: a "Name" text field limited to 12 characters, a "Date" field, a font picker with a live preview, and, on the Pro plan, a photo upload. Each one saves to the order as its own labelled line. Our comparison of structured fields vs note-to-seller personalization goes deeper on why that matters for fulfillment.

Options

Etsy listings support up to two variation types (for example Size and Color), each with its own list of choices, and you can set different prices and quantities per combination.

Shopify allows three options and up to 2,048 variants per product, plus as many personalization fields as you need, saved as line-item properties. That headroom matters if you sell something like a custom pet portrait with size, frame, background color, number of pets and a name.

Fees

Etsy's published fees include a $0.20 listing fee per item, a 6.5% transaction fee on the sale price (including shipping), payment processing, and an Offsite Ads fee on some sales that come from Etsy's ads. Shopify charges a monthly plan fee (the Basic plan starts around $29/month when billed annually) plus payment processing, and no per-sale fee when you use Shopify Payments.

Here's a rough comparison for a store selling 100 personalized mugs a month at $25 each, ignoring payment processing (which is similar on both) and Offsite Ads:

CostEtsyShopify + PIMW Product Personalizer Basic
Monthly revenue$2,500$2,500
Listing or plan fee$20 (100 renewals at $0.20)$29 plan + $7.99 app
Transaction fee$162.50 (6.5%)$0
Approximate platform cost$182.50$36.99

The catch is traffic. On Shopify you pay for marketing that Etsy partly includes. If you'd spend more than the difference on ads to get those 100 orders, Etsy can still come out ahead. Check current fees on each platform before deciding, since both change them from time to time. If fees are a big factor, our list of options apps with no transaction fees shows which Shopify apps add none of their own.

Traffic

Etsy brings buyers who are already searching for "personalized dog mom mug", but they see competitors' listings right next to yours. Shopify sends no traffic by itself; you build it with SEO, social, ads and email. Etsy often converts faster for new sellers, while Shopify gives you customer emails, repeat buyers and a brand you control.

Running both

Many sellers use Etsy for discovery and Shopify for repeat customers and higher-value custom work. Third-party apps on the Shopify App Store can sync listings and orders between the two, though personalization data usually comes through as Etsy's single text box rather than separate fields. Keep your personalization instructions consistent on both so fulfillment doesn't have to handle two formats.

Moving from Etsy to Shopify

  1. Export your Etsy listings to CSV and use them as the starting point for Shopify products.
  2. Rebuild each Etsy variation as a Shopify option, and turn the personalization box into separate fields.
  3. Set character limits that match what you allowed on Etsy, so returning buyers aren't surprised.
  4. Place a test order and check that every field shows on the order and packing slip.
  5. Tell past buyers about your store only through channels where they've agreed to hear from you.

Frequently asked questions

Etsy vs Shopify for personalized products?

Etsy is easier to start because it brings shoppers to you. Shopify suits sellers with complex personalization or who want lower per-sale fees and their own customer list. Many sellers run both.

Personalization features: which better?

Shopify, with a personalizer app, gives you separate fields, font pickers, live preview and add-on pricing. Etsy's built-in box is simpler and fine for a single name or short message.

Fees comparison?

Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing, plus Offsite Ads fees on some sales. Shopify charges a monthly plan fee and payment processing with no per-sale platform fee on Shopify Payments, so it gets cheaper as volume grows.

Migrate Etsy to Shopify?

Yes. Export your listings to CSV, rebuild variations as Shopify options and turn the personalization box into separate fields. Test an order before you announce the new store.

Sell on both?

Yes. Third-party apps can sync listings and orders between Etsy and Shopify. Keep your personalization instructions consistent across both.

Better for SEO?

Shopify gives you your own domain and full control over titles, content and structure. Etsy listings rank under Etsy's domain, and you compete with other sellers there.

Better for brand building?

Shopify. Your store, your design and your email list belong to you, while on Etsy your listing sits next to competitors.
