Which options app is best for jewelry Shopify stores?
For engraved and personalized jewelry, we'd point most stores to Print It My Way. It covers the jobs a jewelry product page actually has to do: hard character limits on engraving fields, photo swatches for metal finish, and conditional logic so the birthstone picker only appears when the buyer says yes to a stone.
It also handles monogram-style layouts for cufflinks and pendants (see our monogram builder guide) and a chain-length dropdown where each length can carry its own price. There's no per-sale fee, and the Free plan covers your first product.
Step-by-step setup
- Install Print It My Way. The Free plan covers your first product with no credit card, so start with your best-selling engraved piece.
- Configure the character limit and font picker. Around 20 characters is typical for a name necklace; a ring band often allows far fewer. Set the limit to what your engraver can physically fit.
- Add metal swatches. Gold, silver and rose gold with real photos of your own pieces, not stock color chips.
- Add the optional extras. A birthstone yes/no toggle, then a stone picker that only shows when the answer is yes (conditional logic is on the Pro plan).
- Set add-on prices. For example, +$15 for an added birthstone or a per-character engraving fee. Fees appear as a separate cart line.
- Place a test order. Check that the engraving text, font, metal and stone all show on the order as line-item properties.
Jewelry-specific features
- Engraving character limits. Most name and initial pieces fall somewhere between 10 and 25 characters. The field stops input at the limit and shows the buyer a live counter, so you never receive text that won't fit.
- Metal swatches. Show gold, silver, rose gold or platinum as photo swatches. If metal changes stock, keep it as a variant and style the variant picker with swatches instead.
- Chain length dropdown. Offer 16, 18 and 20 inch lengths, each with its own upcharge if longer chains cost more.
- Birthstone conditional. Show the stone picker only when "Add a birthstone?" is Yes, which keeps the page short for buyers who don't want one.
- Monogram layouts. A three-letter text field with a monogram-style font and a live preview handles most cufflinks and pendants.
- Per-character pricing. Charge a fee per engraved character, such as $0.50, shown as its own cart line.

- Zakeke: known for 3D product preview, which some fine-jewelry stores use for rings. Check its current plans on the Shopify App Store.
- Hulk Product Options: a field-focused options app. Good for forms with many fields; check whether its preview suits engraved text.
Which one
Pick Print It My Way for 2D engraved jewelry: name necklaces, monogram cufflinks, bar bracelets and birthstone rings. Pick Zakeke if a rotating 3D preview really matters to your buyers, as it can for custom engagement rings.
What should be a variant and what should be a field
This is the setup decision that matters most for jewelry stores. Keep a choice as a Shopify variant if it changes the physical piece you pull from stock or order from a supplier: metal, chain length on pre-made chains, ring size. Make it a personalization field if it only changes what you engrave or add: the name, the font, the date, the stone.
Getting this wrong is how a simple necklace ends up with hundreds of variants. Metal (3) × Length (3) × Font (8) is already 72 variants, and adding a birthstone option would push it over Shopify's three-option limit. Our explainer on the variant explosion problem shows how to untangle it.
| Choice | Variant or field? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Metal (gold, silver, rose gold) | Variant | Different stock and cost |
| Ring size | Variant | Different physical piece |
| Engraving text | Text field | Unique per order |
| Font | Font picker | Changes the engraving only |
| Birthstone | Conditional swatch with add-on price | Optional, priced extra |
Pricing engraving and extras
Jewelry stores price personalization in a few common ways. Pick one and show it clearly next to the field.
- Included in the price. Simple and common for name necklaces, where engraving is the product.
- Flat engraving fee. For example +$10 for a back engraving on a pendant that's sold plain by default.
- Per character. Useful for long messages on bracelets or watch backs.
- Per extra. A fixed add-on for each birthstone or charm.
Font choice matters as much as price. Thin scripts can look lovely on screen and come out unreadable at 2 mm tall. Our guide to the best fonts for engraved products lists which hold up.

Common mistakes
- Setting the character limit by what looks nice on screen instead of what your engraver can fit.
- Offering every font in the library. Six to eight readable options is plenty.
- Making the birthstone picker required, which stops buyers who don't want one.
- Using stock color chips for metal instead of photos of your own pieces.
Birthstone stores have extra details to plan, such as month-to-stone mapping and multi-stone family pieces; see our birthstone jewelry store setup.

Can I set a character limit for engraving?
Yes. Each text field has a hard character limit enforced as the customer types, with a live counter. Set it to what your engraver can physically fit on the piece.
Can I show metal choices as photos?
Yes. Use image swatches for gold, silver and rose gold, each with its own add-on price if needed. If metal changes stock, keep it as a variant and show the variant picker as swatches.
How do I add birthstone selection only when needed?
Use conditional logic, which is on the Pro plan at $13.99/month. Add an "Add a birthstone?" toggle and show the stone picker only when the answer is Yes.
Is there a monogram builder?
You can build monograms with a three-letter text field, a character limit and a monogram-style font, checked in the live preview. Confirm the letter order your engraver uses, such as first-LAST-middle, and say it next to the field.
Can I charge per character for engraving?
Yes. Set a per-character fee on the text field and it's added to the cart as a separate line. A flat engraving fee per field works too.
Should metal and ring size be variants or options?
Variants. They change the physical piece and your stock. Keep engraving text, font and birthstone as personalization fields so you don't multiply variants.
How much does Print It My Way cost for a jewelry store?
The Free plan covers your first product. Paid plans are Basic at $7.99/month, Pro at $13.99/month (which adds photo upload, logo upload and conditional logic) and Unlimited at $24.99/month, with no per-sale fee.
