What is a custom mug maker?
A custom mug maker is a Shopify app that lets your customers design their own mug: text, photo, color, font, on the product page with live wrap-around preview, and generates the sublimation print file automatically at order time. The most-popular Shopify-native option in 2026 is Print It My Way (free to install).
Mugs are POD's gift-driven volume leader. The custom mug maker flow is what separates good POD mug stores from category leaders: wrap-around preview, real-photo mockup, and font/photo fidelity that prints cleanly.
Step-by-step setup
- Install Print It My Way (free). From the Shopify App Store. Powers the custom mug maker on your storefront.
- Create the custom mug product in Shopify. Standard 11oz ceramic is the entry. Add 15oz, latte, travel tumbler as variants if you want a fuller catalog.
- Upload a real-photo mug mockup. Photograph the actual mug at consistent angle (typically straight-on with handle visible). 2000+ px on long edge.
- Set up the wrap-around print canvas. Standard 11oz wrap: ~9.5x4 inches. Match the personalizer canvas to your fulfillment partner's exact template.
- Enable perspective warp. Customer text/photos render with the right curve on the mug. Print It My Way ships warp templates for standard mug sizes.
- Add personalization fields. Text (name, quote), font picker, color choice, photo upload with crop tool locked to the wrap aspect ratio.
- Connect Printful / Printify and test. Native integration auto-attaches the sublimation print file (PNG at 300 DPI, sRGB, partner-specific template). Order a sample mug to verify.

Mug categories to offer
- 11oz ceramic: Most popular. Cost $4-6, retail $15-22.
- 15oz ceramic: Larger upsell. Cost $5-8, retail $18-26.
- Latte mug (wide-mouth): Premium feel. Cost $7-10, retail $22-32.
- Travel mug / tumbler: Cost $12-18, retail $28-42.
- Color-changing magic mug: Novelty. Cost $8-12, retail $22-32.
Wrap-around print handling
Mug print wraps 360 degrees around the cup. Customer designs should account for handle position (don't put critical text directly behind it). Use a mockup that shows the handle so the customer sees the constraint.
Most-popular mug personalization patterns
- Name + occupation ('Coffee then conquer, [Name]')
- Family role mug ('World's Best Dad', 'Mom of [kid names]')
- Photo mug (pet photo, family photo, couple photo)
- Inside joke / private quote
- Anniversary date + couple names
- Office mug (department, position, inside joke)
Pre-built templates win for mugs
Mug customers come with gift intent but limited design skill. 5-10 pre-built templates per product ('World's Best Dad', 'Coffee Then Conquer') drive 60-70% of orders. Blank-canvas mode is rarely used on mug products.

What's the best custom mug maker app for Shopify?
Print It My Way is free and includes live wrap-around preview, perspective warp, 35+ commercially-licensed fonts, and native Printful/Printify/Gelato integration with auto sublimation print file generation.
How big is the wrap-around print area on a standard mug?
11oz ceramic mug: approximately 9.5 x 4 inches. 15oz: approximately 9.5 x 4.5 inches. Use your fulfillment partner's exact template for the personalizer canvas.
Can the design wrap around the entire mug?
Yes: sublimation print covers the full wrap area (handle to handle). Avoid putting critical text within 2 inches of the handle position; that area sits awkwardly on the cup.
Should I offer photo mugs?
Yes: pet photo mugs, family photo mugs, couple photo mugs are some of POD's strongest gift categories. Configure photo upload with HEIC handling and crop tool locked to the wrap aspect ratio.
What's the typical custom mug AOV?
$15-32 for single mug. $35-65 for matched couple/family sets. Bundle pricing improves AOV: 'his/hers mug set' converts higher than two separate mug orders.
Do I need a different mockup per mug color?
Yes. The same design reads differently on white vs black vs colored mugs. Upload one mockup per color variant; Print It My Way auto-switches based on the active variant.
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers most small stores; paid plans unlock higher order volume, advanced features like Cart Transform per-character pricing, premium fonts, and white-glove support. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does Print It My Way take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.
Does Print It My Way work with Shopify Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus?
Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Some advanced features like Cart Transform (per-character pricing) and B2B company accounts require Shopify Plus, but the core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners. The customer's personalization data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives the print files automatically.
Does Print It My Way support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
