How do I add a live character counter to a Shopify personalization field?
Install Print It My Way (Free plan). Add a Text field, set a maxlength (e.g., 20 chars for engraving), and toggle "Show character counter." As the customer types, a live count shows how many characters remain: "Character 8 / 20." Also works for per-character tiered pricing (fee updates live with the counter).
Step-by-step setup
- Install Print It My Way. Character counter on every tier including Free.
- Add text field. Print It My Way > Add field > Text.
- Set maxlength. E.g., 20 chars for engraving.
- Toggle 'Show character counter'. Displays live count as customer types.
- Test on storefront. Type in the field, watch counter decrement.
Why character counters matter
- Engraving fonts have physical limits (metal ring, small tag)
- Customers who don't see the limit type past it and get frustrated when clipped
- Per-character pricing needs the counter to show the running fee
- Improves mobile UX where the field label often scrolls off-screen
Setup steps
Step 1: Install Print It My Way.
Step 2: Product > Print It My Way tab > Add field > Text.
Step 3: Set maxlength (15 chars for ring, 20 for tag, 40 for cake message).
Step 4: Toggle "Show character counter."
Step 5: Attach to product. Test.
With per-character pricing
Enable per-character pricing on the same field. Counter shows current fee:
- "Character 8 / 40. Fee: $0 (under 10-char free tier)."
- "Character 15 / 40. Fee: $2.50 (5 chars over free tier @ $0.50)."
- "Character 30 / 40. Fee: $12.50."
Font-specific character limits
Different fonts have different character limits. "Amatic SC" holds 20 chars comfortably on a ring; "Ultra Condensed" holds 25. Use Pro tier + conditional logic to change the character counter's max based on the font selection.

Yes with conditional logic (Pro tier): different fonts can have different max character limits.
What's a good character limit for engraving?
