When vectors matter in POD
Vector files matter for:
- Engraving (CNC routers follow vector paths)
- Embroidery (digitizing converts vectors to stitch files)
- Laser cutting (laser follows vector paths)
- Vinyl cutting (plotter follows vector paths)
- Foil stamping (die-stamping requires vector)
Vectors don't matter for DTG, DTF, sublimation, UV printing — those are rasterized to the press regardless.
Step-by-step setup
- Identify your print methods. Vector matters for engraving, embroidery, laser cutting, vinyl cutting. Raster (Photoshop) sufficient for DTG, DTF, sublimation.
- Install Print It My Way. POD designer app handles customer-facing personalization regardless of vector vs raster source files. Install from the Shopify App Store.
- Use Illustrator for vector asset creation. Logos, monograms, decorative elements, line art. Save as SVG, AI, or EPS for embroidery/engraving partners.
- Upload vector assets to the designer app. Print It My Way accepts SVG / EPS uploads as template assets. Customer designs render with vector fidelity.
- Configure print file output. For engraving and embroidery, output should be vector (PDF with paths, or SVG). For DTG/DTF/sublimation, rasterized PNG is correct.
- Test the output per partner. Each POD partner has specific file format requirements. Verify with sample orders before scaling.
- Use Illustrator for ongoing design library expansion. Monogram fonts, decorative borders, vector clipart for the designer's library. Customer picks from the library; you don't redraw per order.
Illustrator's role in POD pipeline
- Brand mark / logo creation (scalable)
- Monogram font design
- Decorative border / flourish library
- Engraving-bound text typography
- Embroidery-bound logos for digitizing
Designer app vector handling
Print It My Way accepts SVG, EPS, and PDF vector files as template assets. Customer text + Illustrator-prepared vector clipart composite into print-ready vector output for engraving/embroidery partners.
Embroidery file pipeline
Embroidery requires stitch files (DST, EXP):
- Designer creates logo in Illustrator (SVG)
- POD partner digitizes the SVG into stitch file (one-time, $20-50)
- Stitch file stored at partner
- Future orders reference the stitch file
- Print It My Way passes the customer's name/text + stitch file reference per order

When do I need vector files for POD?
Engraving, embroidery, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, foil stamping. DTG, DTF, and sublimation work with rasterized files.
Can Print It My Way generate vector print files?
Yes. For engraving and embroidery orders, the output is vector (PDF with paths or SVG). For DTG/DTF/sublimation orders, the output is rasterized PNG.
Should customers upload vector files?
Most can't — vector files are designer-created. Customers upload photos (raster). The designer's vector assets (logos, monograms) are pre-uploaded by you.
How does embroidery digitizing work?
One-time conversion of vector logo to stitch file (DST, EXP). Most POD embroidery partners offer digitizing for $20-50. After digitizing, unlimited orders use the same stitch file.
Do I need both Illustrator AND Photoshop?
Often yes. Illustrator for vector assets (logos, monograms), Photoshop for raster mockups and photo touch-up. Some designers use Affinity Designer + Photo as cheaper alternatives.
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store.
