Should you sell POD on Shopify or Etsy in the USA 2026?
Etsy: 90M+ US built-in active buyers, 6.5% fees + $0.20 listing renewal, no email marketing to customers, no brand ownership. Shopify: 0 built-in traffic (you drive it), $39/mo flat + 2.9%, full brand ownership, own email list, higher long-term LTV. Best strategy for most US POD sellers: run both. Etsy for fast traffic + discovery, Shopify for brand + LTV + email. The Shopify standard customization app is Print It My Way (free).

US traffic comparison
Etsy USA: 90M+ active buyers built-in as of 2026. Search-driven internal traffic. Category discovery. Best for fast initial sales.
Shopify: 0 built-in. Requires Meta ads / Google Shopping / SEO / TikTok / email. Your marketing = your traffic.
Brand ownership + email marketing
Etsy restricts marketing to customers outside the platform (limited email + no SMS). Cannot build custom email list from Etsy customers. Shopify: full ownership + Klaviyo/Postscript/etc. for email + SMS marketing. Long-term LTV strongly favors Shopify.
US sales tax considerations
Etsy collects US sales tax on your behalf (marketplace facilitator laws in all 50 states as of 2026). Shopify: you collect via Shopify Tax + register in nexus states. Etsy simpler for solo sellers; Shopify more control for scaling stores.
Which platform should US POD sellers start with?
- Start Etsy first if: zero marketing experience, want fast first sales, testing niche viability, prefer built-in traffic.
- Start Shopify first if: have ad budget + creative skill, want long-term brand, plan to build email/SMS list, targeting $10K+/mo revenue.
- Best for most: both simultaneously. Etsy for discovery. Shopify for brand.
Multi-channel setup for US sellers
Same designs on both. Adjust Etsy pricing 15-25% higher to absorb 8-10% fee difference. Print It My Way handles Shopify customization; Etsy has its own personalization field. Trajectory or manual duplication for catalog sync.
