Shopify gives each product one meta description, and every variant shares it. For the vast majority of stores that is the right setup, because variant URLs point back to the main product page anyway. Per-variant descriptions only pay off in a narrow set of cases, and they add theme code you'll have to maintain. This guide explains how Shopify handles it by default, when a per-variant description is worth the effort, and how to write one that fits.
Default Shopify behavior
You set the meta description in the Search engine listing section at the bottom of the product page in your admin. If you leave it blank, Shopify falls back to the start of the product description. Every variant of that product uses the same text.
Variant links such as /products/cotton-tee?variant=123 carry a canonical tag that points to the main product URL in most themes. Google treats them as the same page, so it shows the product-level description. That is usually what you want: one strong page collecting all the links and reviews instead of 30 thin ones. Our explainer on canonical tags for variants covers why. For broader SEO basics, start with the product-level fields.
When per-variant matters
Consider per-variant descriptions only if at least one of these is true:
- You've made variant URLs indexable on purpose. Some stores give key variants their own URL and self-referencing canonical so "navy linen shirt" can rank separately from "white linen shirt". If you've done that, each one needs its own description. See unique URLs per variant for the setup and the risks.
- People search for specific variants. If your search data shows real demand for "rose gold name necklace" and you sell gold, silver and rose gold as variants, a variant-specific snippet can win more clicks.
- A feed or marketplace reads per-variant text. Some shopping feeds build listings at variant level and benefit from variant-specific descriptions.
If none of these apply, spend the time on a better product-level description instead.
How to set per-variant
Shopify has no admin field for this, so it's a theme edit. In the <head> section of theme.liquid, where the meta description is printed, check whether a variant is selected through the URL and build the text from the variant title and the product description:
{% if template contains 'product' and product.selected_variant %}{{ product.selected_variant.title }} | {{ product.description | strip_html | truncatewords: 25 }}{% else %}{{ page_description }}{% endif %}
For more control, store a custom description in a variant metafield and print that when it exists, falling back to the product description when it doesn't. Test the result by opening a variant URL and viewing the page source. Duplicate a theme before editing it so you can roll back.
Keep in mind that if your canonical still points to the main product, Google will mostly ignore the variant description. The two changes go together. Our notes on duplicate content from variants explain what happens if you get this half right.
Character limits
Google shows roughly 150 to 160 characters on desktop and less on mobile, and it may rewrite your description if it thinks another passage matches the search better. Aim for about 150 characters. Put the product type and the variant detail near the start, then a reason to click.
| Approach | Example |
|---|---|
| Product level (default) | Personalized name necklace in gold, silver or rose gold. Pick your font, preview it live, ships in 3 to 5 days. |
| Variant level | Rose gold name necklace with your name in one of 35+ fonts. Preview your design before you buy. Ships in 3 to 5 days. |
Personalized products
For personalized items, the meta description should sell the product and the customization, not a specific order. "Custom pet name mug, add your pet's name and photo, preview it live" works. Customer details change with every order and live in line-item properties, so they never belong in SEO fields. Print It My Way's live preview and font picker are good selling points to mention, since shoppers searching for personalized gifts want to know they'll see the result first. Common mistakes
- Leaving the field blank, so Google gets the first lines of your description, which are often shipping notes.
- Copying the same description across a whole collection.
- Adding per-variant descriptions while variants still canonicalize to the main product.
- Stuffing every color and size into 160 characters.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify variants have different meta descriptions?
Not from the admin. Every variant shares the product's meta description unless you edit your theme to print a different one when a variant is selected in the URL.
When does per-variant meta matter?
Only when variant URLs are deliberately indexable, when people search for specific variants, or when a feed reads variant-level text. Otherwise the product-level description is enough.
How to set dynamic meta description?
Edit the head of theme.liquid so that, when a variant is selected, it prints the variant title plus a trimmed product description or a variant metafield. Duplicate your theme first and test with a variant URL.
Character limit for meta description?
Aim for about 150 characters. Google shows roughly 150 to 160 on desktop and less on mobile, and may rewrite descriptions it finds less relevant.
Does variant meta description affect ranking?
Not directly. A clear, specific description can improve the click rate from search results, which is where the value comes from.
Product-level or variant-level default?
Product level, for almost every store. Move to variant level only for the specific cases above, and only alongside indexable variant URLs.
Meta description for personalized products?
Describe the product and the personalization on offer, such as name, photo and live preview. Order-specific details belong on the order, not in SEO fields.
Best template for variant meta?
Start with the variant and product type, add one selling point, then the shipping time, for example "Rose gold name necklace, preview your design live, ships in 3 to 5 days." Keep it near 150 characters.
