Product options app vs metafields — which one?
Metafields hold merchant-set product metadata that's the same for every order of that product — dimensions, weight class, warranty tier, ingredient list, care instructions. Product options apps capture per-order customer input that differs per order — engraving name, uploaded photo, gift message, add-on choices. They're not interchangeable. Metafields are storefront-facing product info; options apps capture customer-facing input.
Step-by-step setup
- Ask: is this data set by merchant or customer?. Merchant = metafield. Customer = options app.
- Ask: is it same for all orders of this product?. Yes = metafield. Different per order = options app.
- Pick tool that matches the data source. Wrong tool = broken UX.
When to use metafields
- Product dimensions (12 × 18 inches)
- Weight class
- Warranty tier (1-year, 3-year)
- Ingredient list (for cosmetics, food)
- Care instructions
- Country of manufacture
- UPC / barcode
- Any info that's static per product SKU
When to use a product options app
- Custom text (name, engraving, monogram)
- Photo / logo / file upload
- Gift wrap yes/no
- Rush delivery tier
- Custom message text
- Any per-order customer choice
The key difference
Metafields = same for all orders of that product. If you sell 100 mugs, all 100 orders have the same "Care: microwave-safe" metafield.
Options apps = different per order. Each of 100 mug orders can have a different engraving name.
Confusing them: you can't put engraving text in a metafield (it'd be the same for everyone). You can't put dimensions in an options app (customer shouldn't have to enter them).
Using both together
They coexist perfectly. A custom mug product has:
- Metafields: dimensions, weight, care instructions, ceramic type
- Native variants: 11oz / 15oz size
- Options app (Print It My Way): engraving name (text), font (dropdown), gift wrap (checkbox)

Are metafields free?
Yes. Every Shopify plan includes metafields.
Can I use metafields for personalization?
No. Metafields are static per product SKU. Personalization needs per-order input, which is line-item properties (via an options app).
Can I display metafields on the product page?
Yes with theme code or apps. Metafields render as read-only info to the customer.
Are metafields the same as line-item properties?
No. Metafields = product-level metadata. Line-item properties = per-order customer input.
Do I need an options app if I use metafields?
Only if you also need customer input. Metafields don't capture customer choices.
