If you searched for the "Variant Option" product options app, you almost certainly mean Variant Option Product Options by Relentless Apps. It's one of the oldest options apps on the Shopify App Store: listed since February 2017, rated 4.7 out of 5 from 635 reviews at the time of writing (October 2026).
Short version: it's a solid, no-frills way to add unlimited extra options, swatches, text boxes and file uploads to a product page. Conditional logic and price add-ons sit on the $19.99 Advanced plan. What it doesn't do is show the customer a live preview of their text or photo on the product, which matters if you sell personalized goods.
Below we cover what the app actually does, what each plan includes, what reviewers say, where it falls short, and how it compares with YMQ Product Options (the app people most often confuse it with) and with our own app, PIMW Product Personalizer.
A quick note on bias: we build a competing app. We've stuck to what Relentless Apps publishes on its App Store listing and help center, and we've said so when something isn't documented. Check the listing yourself before you install, because plans and prices change.
Key takeaways
- Variant Option Product Options by Relentless Apps is a mature options app rated 4.7 from 635 reviews at the time of writing.
- Conditional logic and price add-ons both require the $19.99 Advanced plan; YMQ includes them at $9.99.
- The help center says ajax carts aren't compatible with price add-ons, file uploads or the grid option, so test cart drawers first.
- There's no live preview, so for personalized gifts a personalizer is the better fit than any pure options app.
What Variant Option Product Options is
Variant Option Product Options adds what Relentless Apps calls "Virtual Options" to your product pages. These are extra choices that live outside Shopify's own variant system.
Shopify still allows three options per product, even after it raised the variant cap to 2,048 per product. If you sell a custom sign with size, material, finish, font, mounting and a gift message, you run out of native options fast. An options app fills that gap without forcing you to create thousands of SKUs.
The app's own help article puts it plainly: virtual options let you get past Shopify's option limits "and allow you to create infinite options and values." The same article lists the trade-offs. Virtual options have no inventory control, no SKU, and product images don't change when a virtual option is selected.
That last point is worth reading twice if you sell products where the photo should react to a choice. A color swatch built as a virtual option won't swap the main image.
Option types
The help center lists 11 virtual option types:
- Dropdown
- Buttons
- Color swatches
- Image swatches
- Text (single line)
- Long text (multi-line)
- File upload, up to 20 MB per file
- Radio buttons
- Checkboxes
- Grid, a table layout that suits things like prescription lens data
- Instructions, a display-only block for text, HTML and links
The App Store listing also mentions multi-select, number fields, gift wrap, custom CSS, custom HTML and translation. It's a broad set for a pure options app. The Grid type is unusual and useful for eyewear or any product where the customer fills in a small table of values.
Conditional logic
Conditional logic lets you show or hide an option based on an earlier choice. Pick "Engraving: Yes" and the text box appears; pick "No" and it stays hidden. It keeps long option lists from overwhelming shoppers.
In Variant Option Product Options this is an Advanced plan feature. Our guide to conditional logic for Shopify products explains why this tends to be the feature stores need first once they go beyond a handful of options.
How price add-ons work
Price add-ons are also Advanced-only. You attach a price to each option value, and by default the product page shows a line like "Selection will add..." above the add-to-cart button.
A few documented details matter in practice:
- You can enter negative add-ons, but the help center says the checkout price can never drop below the price listed in Shopify.
- You need to enable the app from its own dashboard, not just switch on the app embed in the theme editor, or price add-ons won't work in the cart.
- The help center states that ajax carts "aren't compatible with price add-ons, file uploads, and the grid product option." Ajax carts are disabled by default for that reason. If your theme relies on a slide-out cart drawer, test carefully before you go live.
Relentless Apps' public docs don't spell out the exact checkout mechanism behind the add-on charge, so we won't guess. If you care how add-on fees appear on orders, invoices and reports, ask their support before you commit. The difference between add-on methods is real, and we cover it in Cart Transform vs variant-based pricing.
Plans and prices
Here's what the App Store listing showed at the time of writing (October 2026).
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free | 1 product, unlimited options, buttons, swatches, text boxes, file uploads, checkboxes, radio buttons, multi-select |
| Basic | $9.99/month or $99.99/year | Unlimited products, everything in Starter, duplicate tool, 14-day free trial |
| Advanced | $19.99/month or $199.99/year | Everything in Basic plus conditional logic and price add-ons, 14-day free trial |
| Development stores | Free | For building and testing |
The free plan is genuinely useful for testing on one product. But most stores that need an options app need either conditional logic or paid add-ons, and both sit on Advanced. Budget $19.99 a month, or about $16.66 a month on the annual plan, if that's you.
There's no per-sale fee listed on any plan, which keeps costs predictable as you grow.
What reviewers say
At the time of writing the listing showed 635 reviews: 567 five-star (89%), 18 four-star, 13 three-star, 7 two-star and 30 one-star (5%). Recent reviews were dated June to August 2026, and the developer replies to reviews.
The recurring themes we found:
- Getting past Shopify's option limits. This is the main reason people install it, and most reviewers say it does the job for complex, highly customized products.
- Support. Many reviews praise patient, responsive help, especially with theme integration problems.
- Longevity. Several reviewers mention using it for four or five years or more.
- Updates breaking setups. A minority of negative reviews describe updates affecting existing configurations.
- Slow replies. A few reviewers report waiting on email support.
Treat these as seller reports, not guarantees. Your theme, cart setup and product complexity will shape your experience more than any average star rating.
Strengths
It's mature. Nine years on the App Store means most common theme quirks have been seen before, and the help center is extensive.
The option set is wide. Grid, instructions blocks, long text, file uploads and image swatches cover most non-visual configuration needs.
Pricing is flat. $9.99 or $19.99 a month with no transaction fee, and an annual discount if you're sure.
The free plan isn't a trial. One product, unlimited options, no time limit. That's enough to see whether it works with your theme.
Weaknesses
No live preview. The docs describe options, not a design canvas. Customers type a name into a box but don't see it on the mug, necklace or shirt. For personalized products, that's the single biggest gap. Shoppers want to see the result before they pay, and a text box alone doesn't show them.
Key features are on the top plan. Conditional logic and price add-ons both require Advanced at $19.99. Some competing options apps include them on cheaper tiers.
Cart drawer friction. The ajax cart limitation means stores using a slide-out cart may need workarounds or a switch to a full cart page.
Virtual options don't touch inventory or images. That's normal for options apps, but it means you still need real Shopify variants for anything you stock.
The listing copy is dated. It still talks about the 100-variant limit. Shopify now allows 2,048 variants, though the three-option cap remains. That's cosmetic, but read our piece on whether you still need an options app after the 2,048 variant update before you assume you need one.
Variant Option vs YMQ Product Options
The two names get mixed up because YMQ's listing title includes "variant option" too. They're different apps from different developers. Here's how their listings compared at the time of writing.
| Variant Option Product Options | YMQ Product Options, Variants | |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | Relentless Apps | YMQ |
| Listed since | February 2017 | March 2021 |
| Rating | 4.7 (635 reviews) | 5.0 (422 reviews) |
| Free plan | 1 product, unlimited options | 16 option types, unlimited option sets |
| Conditional logic | Advanced, $19.99/mo | Basic, $9.99/mo |
| Price add-ons | Advanced, $19.99/mo | Basic, $9.99/mo |
| Top plan | $19.99/mo | Plus, $26.99/mo (volume discounts, price formulas) |
| Live preview on product | Not documented | Not documented |
On paper, YMQ gets you conditional logic and add-on pricing for $10 a month less. Its Advanced plan ($16.99) adds 30+ option types, cart editing and translation, and Plus adds volume discounts, percentage and market pricing, and a formula builder.
Variant Option has the longer track record and a large review base. If you're choosing between the two for a pure options job, install both on a development store (both have free plans) and test them on your actual theme and cart. That will tell you more than the feature grid.
Neither is built for visual personalization. Both are options apps first. If that distinction is new to you, our explainer on the options app vs personalizer app difference walks through it.
How it compares with PIMW Product Personalizer
We'll keep this short and fair. Variant Option Product Options and PIMW Product Personalizer solve overlapping but different problems.
Variant Option is an options app. It's the right fit when your problem is "I need more dropdowns, swatches and fields than Shopify allows" and the customer doesn't need to see a design.
PIMW is a personalizer. It shows a live preview on the product photo as the customer types, with 35+ fonts, character limits, swatches, and photo and logo upload. Add-on fees appear as a separate cart line, and the personalization is saved on the order as line-item properties so Printful, Printify, Gelato or your own workshop can read it.
| Variant Option Product Options | PIMW Product Personalizer | |
|---|---|---|
| Live preview on product | No | Yes |
| Free plan | 1 product | First product, no credit card |
| Paid plans | $9.99, $19.99/mo | $7.99, $13.99, $24.99/mo |
| Conditional logic | $19.99 plan | Pro, $13.99/mo |
| Add-on pricing | $19.99 plan | Shown as a separate cart line |
| Photo and logo upload | File upload on all plans | Pro and up, shown in the preview |
| Per-sale fee | None | None |
| Grid and instructions blocks | Yes | Not our focus |
If you sell technical configurations, like eyeglass prescriptions, made-to-measure furniture or B2B spec sheets, Variant Option's Grid and Instructions types are a better match than a design canvas.
If you sell name necklaces, photo mugs, engraved tumblers or custom shirts, the preview is what sells the product. A customer who can see "MAYA" in their chosen font on the actual item has less to wonder about than one staring at an empty text box. That's the case for a product personalizer with live preview over a pure options app.
How to decide: a quick checklist
Run through these before you install anything:
- Does the customer need to see their design? If yes, shortlist personalizers, not options apps.
- Do you need conditional logic? If yes, price Variant Option at $19.99, YMQ at $9.99 and PIMW at $13.99.
- Do you charge for options? Check how each app adds the fee and how it shows on your orders. Ask support if the docs don't say.
- Does your theme use a cart drawer? Test add-ons and file uploads in it on a development store first, especially with Variant Option.
- Do you need inventory on the extra options? If so, those choices must stay as real Shopify variants, whichever app you use.
- How many products need options? All three free plans cover one product. Count yours before comparing paid tiers.
A worked example: say you sell custom wooden signs with 4 sizes, 3 wood types, 2 finishes, a font choice and an optional engraving line at $8 extra. Size, wood and finish fit Shopify's three native options (24 variants). Font and engraving need an app. With Variant Option you'd need Advanced ($19.99) for the $8 add-on and to hide the engraving box until it's chosen. The customer would type their text without seeing it on the sign. With a personalizer, the same setup costs $13.99 on PIMW's Pro plan and the shopper sees their wording on the board before checkout.
Our verdict
Variant Option Product Options is a dependable, long-running options app with flat pricing, a wide option set and support that reviewers rate highly. If your job is extra fields and swatches, it's a reasonable pick. Test it on a development store before paying, especially if your theme uses an ajax cart.
Its main limits are that conditional logic and add-on pricing sit on the $19.99 plan, and that there's no live preview. YMQ offers the first two for less. For personalized products where the shopper wants to see the result, a personalizer is the better tool.

Does Variant Option Product Options show a live preview?
Its documentation doesn't describe a live preview of text or photos on the product image, and it states that product images don't change when a virtual option is selected. If you sell personalized products, look at a personalizer with live preview.
Do I still need an options app now that Shopify allows 2,048 variants?
Often yes. Shopify raised the variant cap to 2,048 per product but still allows only three options, and text boxes or file uploads can't be variants. An options app or personalizer covers those.
