Variant options vs line item properties — which do I use?
Use variant options when the customer's choice affects inventory / SKU — different size, color, or material combinations that you stock separately. Use line item properties when the customer's choice is per-order input that doesn't affect stock — engraving text, uploaded photos, gift wrap, monogram, custom messages. Line item properties are the cleaner tool for personalization; variants are the right tool for inventory dimensions.
Step-by-step setup
- Ask: does this choice affect stock?. Yes = variant. No = line item property.
- Ask: can this be free-form input?. Yes = line item property. No = might be variant.
- Ask: do I need per-option pricing?. Both can. Cart Transform makes line-item property pricing cleaner.
Decision tree
For each customer choice, ask three questions:
- Does it affect stock? Yes = variant. No = line item property.
- Is the input free-form? Yes (any name, any text) = line item property. No (fixed list) = could be either.
- Would it explode variant count? Yes = line item property. No = variant is fine.
Decision table
| Customer choice | Variant or line item property? |
|---|---|
| Size (XS, S, M, L, XL) | Variant |
| Color (Red, Blue, Green) | Variant |
| Material (Cotton, Poly, Blend) | Variant |
| Engraving text | Line item property |
| Uploaded photo | Line item property |
| Gift wrap yes/no | Line item property |
| Monogram initials | Line item property |
| Rush delivery tier | Line item property |
| Font choice | Line item property |
| Multi-side print positions | Line item property |
Why line item properties for customization
Variants create SKUs. Each SKU has stock, price, weight, image. Modeling engraving names as variants would require infinite SKUs. Line item properties travel with the order but don't create SKUs — same product, unlimited possible customer input.
Pricing both
Variants have their own prices (Small $20, Medium $22, Large $24). Line item properties can have per-property upcharges via Cart Transform (gift wrap +$5, engraving +$8). Cleaner than modeling upcharges as variants.
