Shopify now allows up to 2,048 variants on a single product. For years the cap was 100, and a lot of store setups (split products, extra apps, odd option names) exist only because of that old number. Here is what the change means in practice and when you should still keep choices out of the variant table.
What changed
The old cap was 100 variants per product. The new cap is 2,048 per product. The limit of 3 options per product did not change, so the extra room comes from having more values inside each option, not from adding a fourth option.
The change applies to every Shopify plan. You do not need Shopify Plus to build a product with 500 or 1,500 variants.
What this enables
- Apparel with a real size and color matrix: 8 sizes x 20 colors = 160 variants. Under the old cap you had to split this into two products.
- Custom jewelry: 5 metals x 10 stones x 15 ring sizes = 750 variants, all on one product page with one set of reviews.
- Configurable furniture: 10 fabrics x 20 colors x 8 sizes = 1,600 variants, still under the cap.
The big win is one URL, one review count and one inventory view per product instead of a cluster of near-identical listings.
Check this before you grow a product
The platform accepts 2,048 variants. Not every theme or app handled that number on day one. Before you merge products or add 40 new colors, check these:
- Your theme's variant picker. Older themes were built and tested with 100 variants in mind. Open a large product on mobile and confirm every option value shows and the right price appears.
- Apps that read variants. Reviews, upsell, feed and inventory apps sometimes load the variant list in one go. Ask the developer whether they support products above 100 variants.
- Your POD or fulfillment partner. Confirm their sync handles your variant count before you push products to them.
- Admin work. Pricing 1,600 variants by hand is slow. A CSV import of your variants is the practical way to build and update products this size.
When 2,048 still isn't enough
Mass customization, where every customer designs a one-off item, should not use variants at all. A name, a date or an uploaded photo has infinite possible values, and no variant cap will ever be large enough. Store those as line-item properties through a personalizer app. Variants are for pre-defined SKUs.
The same goes for add-ons with no stock of their own, such as gift wrap or a rush fee. Our guide to personalization without variant bloat walks through how to keep those choices off the variant table.
Variants or an options app?
A quick way to decide, choice by choice:
| Choice | Has its own stock or SKU? | Best home |
|---|---|---|
| Size, Color, Material | Yes | Native variants |
| Ring size, metal type | Usually | Native variants |
| Engraved name, initials | No | Text field (line-item property) |
| Customer photo or logo | No | Upload field (line-item property) |
| Gift wrap, rush production | No | Add-on option with a fee |
If most of your choices land in the last three rows, the bigger variant cap does not change much for you. We cover that question in more depth in do I still need an options app after 2,048 variants.
Migration from old workarounds
If you split products to get around the 100 limit, you can now consolidate them. That gives you one URL, combined reviews and simpler stock. You can also keep the split for SEO reasons if each split page ranks for its own search terms, such as "black linen sofa" and "green velvet sofa".
If you do merge, redirect each retired product URL to the new combined product so you keep any links and rankings. Our step-by-step guide on migrating from 100 to 2,048 variants covers the redirects, inventory and review moves in order.
Common mistakes
- Merging everything at once. Start with one product family, watch traffic and sales for a few weeks, then do the rest.
- Forgetting redirects. Deleting old split products without redirects throws away their search traffic.
- Turning free-form input into variants just because the room exists. A "Font" option with 30 values times 20 colors is 600 variants you will never stock.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Shopify variant limit as of 2026?
Up to 2,048 variants per product. The previous limit was 100. The limit of 3 options per product is unchanged.
Does the 2,048 limit apply to Shopify Basic or only Plus?
It applies to all Shopify plans, including Basic. You do not need Shopify Plus to use it.
Should I consolidate split products now?
It depends on where your traffic comes from. Consolidating simplifies admin and combines reviews, but you lose the separate URLs. If the split pages bring in real search traffic, keep them; if admin work is the bigger pain, merge and redirect.
How do I check how many variants a product has?
Open the product in your Shopify admin and look at the Variants section, which lists every combination. A product export to CSV also shows one row per variant.
What happens if I exceed 2,048?
Shopify will not let you save more variants than the cap. Reduce option values, split the product, or move choices without stock (names, photos, add-ons) into line-item properties.
Is 2,048 per store or per product?
Per product. There is no matching cap on the total number of variants across your store.
Do variants over 100 work with Shopify checkout and payments?
Yes. Large products go through cart, checkout and order processing like any other product. Your theme and apps are the parts to test.
Do apps like Printful support 2,048 variants?
Support varies by app and changes over time. Check your POD partner's documentation or ask their support before you push a large product to them.
