The core distinction
Options are attributes: Size, Color, Material. Each option has values (Small/Medium/Large). Variants are the SKU-level combinations: 'Small Red Cotton', 'Medium Blue Cotton'. Shopify auto-generates variants from your options.
You define options; Shopify creates variants. 3 options × 4 values × 2 values × 5 values = 40 auto-generated variants.
The 3-option limit
Shopify caps options at 3 per product. If you need 4+ (Size, Color, Material, Fit), you either combine (e.g. 'Cotton Small', 'Cotton Medium' as one option) or use an options app for line-item properties beyond variants.
The 2,048 variant limit (up from 100 in Oct 2025)
Shopify raised the per-product variant cap from 100 to 2,048 on Oct 15, 2025. Now you can offer 8 sizes × 20 colors × 12 materials (1,920 variants) on one product. Old workarounds (split into multiple products) no longer needed at typical scale.
When to use which
- Variants — when each choice affects SKU, inventory, price, weight (Size, Color for apparel)
- Options via app — when choice doesn't need its own SKU (custom text, photo upload, gift wrap)
- Metafields — for merchant-facing data, not customer choice
