What's the difference between Shopify options and variants?
An option is an axis the shopper picks from — Size, Color, Material. Shopify caps you at 3 options per product. A variant is a specific combination of option values — Small/Red/Cotton is one variant, Medium/Red/Cotton is another. Shopify caps you at 2,048 variants per product (since Oct 15, 2025). Every variant is a unique SKU with its own inventory, price, weight, and image. Every option value in the dropdown creates the possibility of new variants.
Step-by-step setup
- Count your axes (options). Size, color, material — max 3 in Shopify.
- Multiply values per axis (variants). 6 sizes × 4 colors × 3 materials = 72 variants.
- For anything else (text, upload, add-ons), use line-item properties. Zero variant impact.
Simple example
A t-shirt with:
- Option 1 — Size (values: XS, S, M, L, XL)
- Option 2 — Color (values: Red, Blue, Black)
That's 2 options and 15 variants (5 × 3). Each variant is a separate SKU: XS Red, XS Blue, XS Black, S Red, and so on.
The caps that matter
| Limit | Value (2026) |
|---|---|
| Options per product | 3 (unchanged) |
| Values per option | 100 |
| Total variants per product | 2,048 (raised from 100 on Oct 15, 2025) |
When to use options vs variants vs line-item properties
Options + variants — for physical inventory dimensions: size, color, material, finish (up to 3 axes).
Line-item properties — for customer input that doesn't affect stock: engraving text, uploaded photo, gift wrap toggle, monogram, rush delivery, date picker.
Metafields — for static product-level info: dimensions, weight class, warranty tier. Not shown to customer as a choice.
The common mistake
Trying to model "engraving name" as a Shopify option. You'd need one option value per possible name — infinite. Even in 2026 with 2,048 variants, you can't hold infinite names. Use line-item properties for customer text input. Native options are for choices that map to real SKUs.

Is an option the same as a variant in Shopify?
No. Options are axes (size, color). Variants are combinations of those axes (Small/Red). Options are the input; variants are the output.
Can I have 4 options?
Not natively. Shopify caps products at 3 options. Use a product options app for a 4th option as a line-item property.
How many variants can I have?
2,048 per product as of Oct 15, 2025. Was 100 before that.
Do variants each have their own SKU?
Yes. Each variant has its own SKU, price, inventory, weight, and image.
Can I have variants without options?
No. Every variant is a combination of option values.
Do line-item properties create variants?
No. They're stored on the cart line, not as new SKUs.
