There are three ways to add product options in Shopify. Use variants (built into Shopify) for choices that change your stock or price, such as size and color: open the product, click "Add options like size or color", enter the option name and values, then save. Use a custom field in your theme (a line item property) for a simple free-text field like a name. And use a product options app for everything else: unlimited options, text and photo fields, checkboxes, conditional logic, extra charges per option and a live preview.
This guide walks through all three methods step by step, explains Shopify's limits (3 options and 2,048 variants per product), and compares the most popular product options apps with their real prices and ratings. Every fact comes from Shopify's Help Center, developer docs or the Shopify App Store, checked in October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Use variants for choices you stock or price separately: Shopify allows 3 options and 2,048 variants per product (since October 15, 2025).
- For one simple text field, add a line item property input inside your theme's product form; it records the text but can't charge extra.
- Use a product options app for unlimited options, uploads, checkboxes, conditional logic and add-on prices.
- Globo, Easify, Aris and PIMW Product Personalizer have free plans; paid plans start at $7.99 to $14.99 a month (October 2026).
Variants vs product options: which do you need?
Shopify uses the word "option" in two ways, which is where most confusion starts.
- Variant options are Shopify's built-in options. Shopify says each combination of option values for a product can be a variant. A T-shirt with 3 sizes and 2 colors has 6 variants, and each one can have its own price, SKU, stock count and image.
- Custom product options (sometimes called "line item properties" or "add-ons") collect information from the customer, such as engraving text, a photo, a gift message or a checkbox for gift wrap. They don't create variants and don't need their own stock.
| You want to offer | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Size, color, material you stock separately | Variants | Each choice has its own stock, SKU or price |
| A name, date or message typed by the customer | Custom field or app | Customers can type anything, so it can't be a variant |
| Photo or logo upload | App | Needs file upload and storage |
| Gift wrap, rush delivery, extra print side | App | Needs a checkbox and an extra charge |
| More than 3 option types | App | Shopify allows only 3 options per product |
| Options that appear only after another choice | App | Needs conditional logic |

Shopify's limits on product options
- 3 options per product. Shopify's Help Center says you can have up to 3 options for each product, such as size, color and material.
- 2,048 variants per product. Since October 15, 2025, all Shopify merchants can create up to 2,048 variants for a product. The old limit was 100.
- No limit on option values. Shopify's developer docs say there's no limit on the number of values per option, but the 2,048-variant limit still applies to the combinations.
- Some apps and themes lag behind. Shopify warns that some themes, apps and sales channels may not support more than 100 variants, so check yours before building very large products.
So the 2,048 limit solved the "too many sizes and colors" problem, but not the 3-option limit, and not options that don't belong in your inventory at all. Our article on whether you still need an options app after the 2,048-variant update explains when the new limit is enough.
Method 1: Add options with Shopify variants

Use this for size, color, material and anything else you stock or price separately.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products and click the product.
- In the Variants section, click + Add options like size or color.
- Enter the Option name, for example "Size".
- Enter each value under Option values: S, M, L, XL.
- To add a second or third option, click + Add another option.
- Click Done, then Save.
- Set the price, SKU and stock for each new variant.
Useful tips from Shopify's Help Center:
- Edit many variants at once: select them with the checkboxes and click Bulk edit.
- Add a value later: click Edit next to the option, type it in "Add another value", click Done and save.
- Reorder options and values by dragging them.
- Add variant images: click a variant's image to choose one of the product's photos. Each variant can have one image, and a product can have up to 250 media items.
- Adding an option to an existing product applies its default value to all existing variants, so check prices and stock afterwards.
Show colors as swatches. If your product's category has a color metafield, you can connect it to your Color option. The option values then come from the metafield entries, and themes that support swatches show them as circles or squares in the variant picker. Our guide to adding color options on Shopify covers the setup.
Very large catalogs on Shopify Plus. Shopify's Combined Listings app, available only on Plus and enterprise plans, groups separate products (for example, one per color) into a single listing with up to 60 products.

Method 2: Add a custom field to your theme (no app)
If you only need one simple text field, such as "Name to print", you can add it to your theme without an app. Shopify calls these line item properties: name and value pairs that are saved on the order with the product.
Shopify's developer docs show the pattern. Inside your product form, add an input whose name starts with properties:
{% form 'product', product %}
<label for="name-to-print">Name to print</label>
<input id="name-to-print" type="text" name="properties[Name to print]" maxlength="20">
{% endform %}
What to know:
- The input must be inside the product form, or the value won't reach the cart. In Online Store 2.0 themes such as Dawn, merchants often add the field through a Custom Liquid block on the product page.
- Start a property name with an underscore (for example
properties[_preview]) to hide it from customers at checkout, according to Shopify's docs. - It doesn't add a charge. A plain property only records what the customer typed, so you can't charge extra for it this way.
- No preview, no file upload, no conditional logic. For those, you need an app.

Method 3: Use a product options app

A product options app is the easiest way to add anything beyond variants. Most work the same way:
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store.
- Create an option set: add fields such as a dropdown, checkboxes, text box, color swatches or photo upload.
- Set prices for options that cost extra, such as +$5 for gift wrap.
- Add rules, for example show the "Engraving text" field only when "Add engraving" is ticked.
- Assign the option set to products, collections or the whole store.
- Add the app block to your product template in the theme editor. Shopify's theme app extensions let apps add app blocks that you position in your product page sections, in Online Store 2.0 themes.
- Place a test order and check the options show on the order.
How the extra charge works. Variants have their own price, but custom options don't. Options apps add the charge for you, for example by adding the fee to the cart, so the customer pays it at checkout. Test discount codes and taxes with a real order, because apps handle this differently.
Product options field types and when to use them

| Field type | Use it for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dropdown | Long lists of choices | Font, finish, wood type |
| Radio buttons | 2 to 5 choices customers should compare | Gift box: none, standard, premium |
| Checkbox | Yes/no extras | Gift wrap +$4, rush delivery +$10 |
| Color or image swatches | Visual choices | Thread color, frame style |
| Text field | Short custom text | Name, initials, date |
| Text area | Longer messages | Gift message |
| Number field | Quantities or measurements | Width in inches |
| Date picker | Delivery or event dates | Wedding date |
| File or photo upload | Customer images and logos | Pet photo, company logo |
Our step-by-step guides cover the most popular ones: dropdown options, checkbox options and photo upload options. If you need more than Shopify's three options, see how to add more than 3 options to a Shopify product.
Best product options apps for Shopify compared
Here is how the most popular product options apps looked on the Shopify App Store in October 2026:
| App | Rating (reviews) | Free plan | Paid plans from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Globo Product Options, Variant | 4.9 (5,161) | Yes | $9.90/month |
| Easify Custom Product Options | 4.9 (3,156) | Yes | $9.99/month |
| IO: Infinite Product Options (ShopPad) | 4.7 (2,623) | No | $12.99/month |
| Aris Product Options, Variants | 4.9 (1,680) | Yes | $12/month |
| SC Product Options (formerly Bold Product Options) | 4.6 (1,255) | Development stores only | $14.99/month |
| PIMW Product Personalizer (our app) | 5.0 (9) | Yes | $7.99/month |
A few notes:
- Plus pricing: Globo and Aris charge more on Shopify Plus (for example, Globo Premium is $9.90 a month, or $39.90 on Plus).
- Trials: most offer a 14-day free trial; PIMW's paid plans have a 3-day trial.
- Hulk Product Options is no longer available on the Shopify App Store, so we left it out.
How to choose:
- Simple options and add-on prices on a budget: start with a free plan from Globo, Easify, Aris or PIMW and check the free plan's limits.
- Personalized products (names, engraving, photos) with a live preview: choose a personalizer. PIMW Product Personalizer is our app: its listing shows text fields, a live preview and add-on fees on every plan, including Free (1 option group with 2 fields, on up to 10 products). Paid plans cost $7.99, $13.99 and $24.99 a month, and customer photo upload is on Pro and Unlimited.
- Large, complex option sets: compare the conditional logic and the number of options each plan allows.

Charging extra for product options

Charging for options is where custom options make money: a $4 gift box or a $10 engraving fee costs you little and lifts every order.
- Price variants directly when the option changes your cost and stock, for example a 15 oz mug at a higher price than an 11 oz.
- Use add-on prices in an options app for extras that aren't stock items: gift wrap, rush delivery, a second print side, engraving.
- Charge per character or per line for engraving and long text. Our guide to per-option pricing shows the setups.
- Show the price on the option ("Gift wrap +$4") so the total at checkout isn't a surprise.
Our guide to adding a gift wrap option on Shopify is a good first example.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Creating variants for things you don't stock. A free-text name can't be a variant, and fake variants fill up your 3 options fast.
- Too many options at once. Every field is something a customer can get wrong. Show advanced options only when they're needed, with conditional logic.
- Vague labels. "Name (max 12 letters, shown on the front)" works better than "Text".
- No character limits. Test the longest allowed text on the real product.
- Forgetting to test the order. Place a test order and check that every option shows on the order and reaches whoever makes the product.
- Ignoring app speed. Every app adds code to your product page. Check your page speed after installing one.
Your product options checklist
- List every choice your product needs.
- Put size, color and material (anything with its own stock or price) into Shopify variants, up to 3 options.
- Decide whether a simple theme field is enough, or whether you need an app for uploads, extra charges or conditional logic.
- Pick an options app with a free plan or trial, and build one option set.
- Add prices to paid extras and show them on the option.
- Add clear labels, help text and character limits.
- Add the app block to your product template.
- Place a test order and check the order details.
Start with variants for what you stock, add an app for what customers create, and keep every option clear enough that customers can't get it wrong.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add product options in Shopify?
Go to Products, open the product, and in the Variants section click Add options like size or color. Enter the option name and its values, click Done and save, then set prices and stock for each variant. For text, uploads, checkboxes or extra charges, use a product options app.
How many options can a Shopify product have?
Up to 3 options per product, and up to 2,048 variants since October 15, 2025 (the old limit was 100). There's no limit on the number of values per option, but all combinations count toward the 2,048 variants.
How do I add more than 3 options in Shopify?
Use a product options app. Apps add options outside Shopify's variant system, so you can have as many option fields as you need, including text, dropdowns, checkboxes and uploads.
Can I add a custom text field to Shopify without an app?
Yes. Add an input named properties[Your field name] inside your theme's product form, for example in a Custom Liquid block. It saves the text on the order as a line item property, but it can't add a charge, a preview or file upload.
How do I charge extra for a product option in Shopify?
If the option is a variant, give that variant a higher price. For extras like gift wrap or engraving that aren't stock items, use a product options app with add-on pricing, which adds the fee to the cart so the customer pays it at checkout.
What is the best product options app for Shopify?
In October 2026, Globo (4.9 from 5,161 reviews) and Easify (4.9 from 3,156 reviews) were the most reviewed apps with free plans. For personalized products with a live preview, PIMW Product Personalizer (our app) has a free plan and paid plans from $7.99 a month.
