Why the cap exists
Shopify's option system is designed for variant-based inventory (each combination = SKU). 3 options × ~10 values each keeps the SKU count manageable. More options = exponential variant explosion.
Workaround 1: Combine option values
'Cotton Small', 'Cotton Medium', 'Linen Small' as a single Material+Size option. Fewer variants but breaks size-only filtering.
Workaround 2: Product options app
Apps like Print It My Way, Bold, Hulk add extra input fields as line-item properties. No SKU generated — customer choice attached to order. Works for Size + Color + Material variants + Fit + Custom text as options via app.
Workaround 3: Split into multiple products
Sell 'Athletic Fit Shirt' + 'Slim Fit Shirt' + 'Regular Fit Shirt' as 3 products. Each with Size + Color + Material variants. Simpler for customers but bad for collection UX.
Workaround 4: Metafields for merchant-facing data
If Fit is merchant-facing (used for filtering, search, reports), store as metafield on the product. Doesn't add to customer choice UI.
