Rich results are the search listings that show more than a blue link: a price, "In stock", a star rating, sometimes a product image. They help a shopper decide before they click. For a Shopify store they come from structured data on your product pages, and most of it is already there. The work is making sure it's complete and accurate, especially for products with variants.
Rich result types
- Product snippets: price, availability and review stars under your normal search result. Driven by Product structured data on the page.
- Merchant listings: richer product displays in Search and the Shopping tab, including free listings. These need price and availability, and work best with a Merchant Center feed alongside your markup. See our Google Shopping guide for the feed side.
- Review snippets: star ratings from customer reviews of the product.
- FAQ and HowTo results: Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of well-known government and health sites, and retired HowTo rich results in 2023. FAQ markup on a product page won't produce an expanded listing for a typical store.
Setup
Most current Shopify themes, including Dawn, output Product structured data automatically through Shopify's structured_data Liquid filter. It includes the title, description, image, price, currency, availability and SKU. You don't need to add anything to get a basic product snippet.
What usually needs attention:
- Reviews. Star ratings need a reviews app that adds rating data to your product markup. Judge.me, Loox and Yotpo are common choices. Check that the app's markup and your theme's markup don't create two separate Product entities.
- Identifiers. Fill SKU and barcode (GTIN) on each variant where you have them. Google uses them to match your product. Our variant barcode setup guide covers UPC and EAN entry.
- Accurate availability. If a variant is sold out, the markup should say so. That depends on tracking quantity correctly.
- No duplicate markup. SEO apps sometimes add a second Product block on top of the theme's. One complete block is better than two partial ones.
Variants and ProductGroup markup
Google supports markup for product variants: a ProductGroup that lists each variant as a Product with hasVariant, and declares which properties vary (size, color) with variesBy. This lets Google understand that the red medium and the blue large are versions of one product rather than separate items.
Whether your theme outputs ProductGroup or a single Product with several offers depends on the theme version and any SEO app you run. Both can earn product snippets. Our schema markup for variants guide shows both shapes and what each field should contain.
Whatever the markup, the variant URLs should still canonicalize to the main product page. Our guide to canonical tags for variants explains how the two fit together.
Testing
- Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test. It lists the structured data it found and any errors or warnings.
- Fix errors first (missing price, invalid availability). Warnings about optional fields like
brandorgtinare worth fixing when you have the data. - Use the Schema Markup Validator for a fuller view of everything on the page.
- After changes go live, check the Product snippets and Merchant listings reports in Google Search Console for errors across the whole store.
Merchant Listings
Free listings let your products appear in the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces without paying for ads. On Shopify, install the Google & YouTube app, connect a Merchant Center account and sync your products. Each variant becomes its own item in the feed, with its own price, image and availability. Our Google Shopping variant feed guide covers how variants map to feed items and the errors that block approval.
Getting review stars
Stars only appear when the page has genuine customer reviews of that product in the markup. Reviews you write yourself, or reviews of your business rather than the product, don't qualify. Collect reviews with a post-purchase email from your reviews app; our article on reviews per variant covers showing which size or color the reviewer bought.
Personalized products
For custom products, show the price a shopper will actually pay for the base product. If personalization adds a fee, that fee shouldn't be baked into the marked-up price. With Print It My Way, add-on fees are added as a separate cart line, so the product price in your structured data stays the true base price and matches your Merchant Center feed.
Frequently asked questions
What are Shopify rich results?
They're search listings that show extra details like price, availability and review stars, built from the structured data on your product pages. Most Shopify themes output the basic data automatically.
How to get rich results for Shopify variants?
Make sure your theme outputs complete Product or ProductGroup structured data, fill SKUs and barcodes on each variant, and add a reviews app for star ratings. Then check your pages with the Rich Results Test.
Does Dawn theme include rich result schema?
Yes. Dawn outputs Product structured data through Shopify's structured_data filter. Review stars need a reviews app that adds rating data.
How to test rich results?
Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test to see what it detects and any errors. After fixes go live, watch the Product snippets and Merchant listings reports in Search Console.
What is Merchant Listings?
It's Google's richer product display in Search and the Shopping tab, including free listings. On Shopify you connect it through the Google & YouTube app and a Merchant Center account.
Star rating in SERP: how to get?
Install a reviews app such as Judge.me, Loox or Yotpo that adds rating data to your product markup. Stars only show for genuine customer reviews of the product.
FAQ rich result on product page?
Not for most stores. Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative government and health sites.
Do rich results increase CTR?
They can, because the shopper sees price and stock before clicking. Google doesn't guarantee rich results will show, so focus on accurate data and measure your own click-through in Search Console.
