A gold personalizer for custom jewelry lets your customer pick the karat, the gold type and the engraving on one product page, see it on the piece, and pay the right price for that exact combination. On Shopify you build it with variants for the choices that change your metal cost and a personalizer for everything else.
Gold is the hardest material to get right online because the word "gold" covers everything from a 22K wedding band to a bracelet with a gold coating a fraction of a micron thick. If your options are vague, you get refund requests. If they are precise, the karat dropdown does half your selling.
Below: which karats to offer, how to label gold types correctly, how to price karat upgrades, what Indian buyers expect from a BIS hallmark, and how we set it up in PIMW Product Personalizer.
Key takeaways
- Offer 10K, 14K and 18K for US buyers and 14K, 18K and 22K for India, where 10K is not a BIS hallmark grade.
- Label gold-filled, vermeil and plated pieces with the FTC definitions in the option name, not only in the description.
- Use variants when you stock each karat and add-on fees when you make to order, and work the upgrade out from pure gold content.
- Review fixed karat fees at least monthly because the gold price moves every day.
What a gold personalizer has to handle
A name necklace in sterling silver needs a text box and a font picker. The same necklace in gold needs three more decisions, and each one changes the price:
- Gold type. Solid gold, gold-filled, vermeil or gold plated.
- Karat. 10K, 14K, 18K or 22K, depending on your market.
- Color. Yellow, rose or white. We cover color swatches and preview accuracy on our yellow gold personalizer page, so this page stays on purity and price.
Engraving, font, birthstone and chain length come after. The gold-specific work is making those three choices clear, honest and priced from your metal cost.
Karat options: what 10K, 14K, 18K and 22K actually mean
Karat measures how much of the alloy is pure gold, out of 24 parts. GIA explains it simply: 24K is pure gold, and an alloy that is 75 percent gold is 18 parts gold out of 24, so 18K.
| Karat | Pure gold content | Fineness stamp | Where it sells | Notes for your product page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41.7% | 417 | US budget and men's lines | Hardest wearing, palest yellow. Not a BIS grade in India |
| 14K | 58.3% | 583 or 585 | US default for rings and everyday chains | The safest "most popular" choice to pre-select in the US |
| 18K | 75% | 750 | Engagement, bridal, Europe | Richer color, softer, needs a clear upcharge line |
| 22K | 91.6% | 916 | India, Gulf, South Asian diaspora | Deep yellow, soft. Fine for bangles and pendants, not thin bands with stone settings |
Your karat list depends on where your buyers are. A US store usually offers 10K, 14K and 18K. A store selling into India should offer 14K, 18K and 22K, because 10K is not one of the purity grades BIS hallmarks there.
Also show the stamp. If the band is marked "14K" or "585" inside, put that in your product photos. Buyers zoom in on it.
Solid, gold-filled, vermeil and plated: label them correctly
In the US, the FTC Guides for the Jewelry Industry (16 CFR Part 23) set what each term means. Use these definitions in your option labels and descriptions, word for word if you can.
- Solid gold. The whole piece is the stated karat alloy. Mark the karat next to the word "gold", for example "14K gold".
- Gold-filled. A layer of at least 10K gold mechanically bonded to a base metal, where the gold layer is at least 1/20th of the weight of the whole piece. Label it "14K gold-filled", never "14K gold".
- Vermeil. A base of sterling silver coated on all significant surfaces with gold of at least 10K, at least 2.5 microns thick.
- Gold plated. A gold coating of at least 10K and at least 0.175 microns thick. Anything thinner is sold as "gold flashed" or "gold washed".
The difference between 0.175 microns and 2.5 microns is why a plated name necklace can fade in months while vermeil lasts much longer. Put that in a short line under the option, not in fine print.
We see this in support tickets: a "Gold" swatch on a plated brass piece, and a customer who assumed solid gold. Name the construction in the option itself: "Gold vermeil (sterling silver base)".
If you sell plated pieces on a brass base, our brass personalizer page covers tarnish and skin reactions, which you should mention on the product too.
Pricing gold by karat: variants or add-ons?
Use Shopify variants when karat changes the item you pull from stock
If you hold finished pieces or castings in each karat, karat is a real variant with its own SKU, inventory count and price. Gold type works the same way if you stock plated and solid versions of a design.
Use add-on fees when the piece is made to order
If every order is cast or plated after purchase, you can keep one base product priced at your lowest option and add the karat upgrade as a fee on the karat dropdown. PIMW shows that fee as a separate cart line, so the customer sees "18K upgrade: $X" instead of a mystery price jump. This keeps your variant count small when you also sell sizes, colors and chain lengths.
Work the upcharge out from gold content
Whichever route you take, price karat from the gold in the piece, not a round guess. A 3 g band in 14K holds about 1.75 g of pure gold. The same band in 18K holds 2.25 g, and in practice it weighs a little more, because higher-karat alloys are denser. Multiply the difference by the day's gold price, add your casting loss and margin, and that is your upgrade fee.
Gold prices move every day, so review fixed add-on fees at least monthly and after any big swing. Keep engraving as its own fee, flat or per character, so the metal price stays comparable across karats.
BIS hallmark and HUID for gold sold in India
If you ship gold to buyers in India, they will check the hallmark.
Hallmarking is mandatory in the districts BIS has notified, which reached 380 districts after the sixth phase came into force in March 2026. The mandatory grades are 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K. 9K hallmarking exists as a voluntary grade.
Each hallmarked piece carries the BIS standard mark, a purity grade such as 22K916 and a six-character alphanumeric HUID that is unique to that piece. Buyers can check the HUID in the BIS CARE app.
What that means for your personalizer:
- Offer only hallmark grades in your karat dropdown for India.
- Show "22K916" style labels alongside the plain "22K" so buyers see the grade they will find on the piece.
- Plan engraving around the hallmark position. On a thin band, the hallmark and a long engraving compete for the same inside surface, so set a lower character limit for 22K bands.
Setting up a gold personalizer in PIMW
Here is the order we use when we onboard a gold jewelry store. Most merchants have the first product live in about 15 minutes.
- Decide variants first. Create karat (and gold type, if stocked) as Shopify variants with their own SKUs and prices, or leave one base variant if you make to order.
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer and open the product. The Free plan covers your first product with no credit card.
- Add a gold type dropdown if you are not using variants. Write the full FTC label in each option, such as "Gold-filled (14K, 1/20 by weight)".
- Add a karat dropdown with an add-on fee on each upgrade option. Pre-select your most common karat.
- Add metal color image swatches for yellow, rose and white so the preview matches the chosen color.
- Add the engraving text field with a character limit sized to the piece, for example "Inside band: max 20 characters".
- Add a font picker with three or four fonts you have test-engraved on gold. Thin scripts can disappear on small 22K pieces.
- Preview on your real product photo on a phone, type the longest allowed text, and check it fits.
- Place a test order and confirm karat, gold type and engraving show on the order as line-item properties your bench jeweler can read.
What your customer sees
A customer opens a 14K yellow gold bar necklace, taps "18K", sees the upgrade fee next to the price, types "Maya" and watches it appear on the bar in the font they picked. The cart shows the necklace and the upgrade as separate lines, and your order screen lists every choice under the item.
Common mistakes with gold personalizers
- Calling plated pieces "gold". Write "gold plated", "gold-filled" or "vermeil" in the option name.
- Offering 10K to Indian buyers. It is not a BIS hallmark grade there.
- One upgrade fee for every product. An 18K upgrade on a 1 g stud and a 6 g band cost you very different amounts.
- Karat and engraving bundled into one price. Customers cannot compare karats, and you cannot see what sells.
How PIMW Product Personalizer fits a gold store
PIMW gives you dropdowns for gold type and karat, metal color swatches, add-on fees per option or per character, a live preview and 35+ fonts. It works on every Shopify plan with no per-sale fee: Free for your first product, then Basic at $7.99, Pro at $13.99 or Unlimited at $24.99 a month. Pro adds conditional logic, which helps when you want to show the 22K option only for designs you cast in 22K.

Frequently asked questions
Should gold karat be a Shopify variant or a personalizer option?
Make karat a variant if you stock finished pieces or castings in each karat, because each one needs its own SKU and inventory. If you cast or plate every order after purchase, one base product with a karat dropdown and an add-on fee keeps your variant count small and shows the upgrade as its own cart line.
What is the difference between gold-filled, vermeil and gold plated?
Under the FTC Guides, gold-filled means a layer of at least 10K gold bonded to a base metal that makes up at least 1/20th of the piece's weight. Vermeil is sterling silver coated with at least 10K gold at least 2.5 microns thick. Gold plated means a coating of at least 10K gold at least 0.175 microns thick.
How do I price an 18K upgrade over 14K?
Work from pure gold content. 14K is 58.3% gold and 18K is 75%, so a 3 g band holds about 1.75 g of gold in 14K and 2.25 g in 18K, and the 18K version weighs a little more. Multiply the difference by the current gold price, add casting loss and margin, and review the fee as gold moves.
Which karats should I offer to buyers in India?
Offer BIS hallmark grades only. Mandatory hallmarking covers 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K, with 9K available as a voluntary grade. 10K is not a BIS grade, so leave it out of an India-facing karat dropdown.
What is HUID on gold jewelry?
HUID is a six-character alphanumeric code unique to each hallmarked piece in India, stamped alongside the BIS standard mark and a purity grade such as 22K916. Buyers can verify it in the BIS CARE app, so show the hallmark in your product photos.
Can the preview show the engraving on gold?
Yes. PIMW shows the customer's text on your product photo as they type, in the font they pick, with character limits you set per field. Use a photo of the piece in each gold color so the preview matches what they ordered.
