A rings personalizer is the part of your product page where a customer picks a ring size, a metal and an engraving, sees the text on the band, and checks out with every detail saved on the order. For a ring, that means four things done well: size, engraving location, a character limit that fits the band, and a price that updates as they choose.
Rings are the hardest piece of jewelry to personalize online. A ring has a curved inside surface a few millimetres wide, a size that varies by country, and buyers often ordering for a wedding date.
Below: the fields to offer, how to price them, and how we set it up in PIMW Product Personalizer. If you sell other pieces, the jewelry personalizer hub links to a guide for each type and metal.
Key takeaways
- Label every ring size with its system (US, UK or India) and show the inside circumference in millimetres.
- Set the inside-band character limit by band width, typically 15 to 30 characters including spaces.
- Keep inside, outside and signet engraving as separate fields with their own limits and fees.
- Couple bands need a second size and engraving block, which conditional logic shows only when a pair is chosen.
What makes rings different from other jewelry
Size is not optional. A necklace has an adjustable chain. A ring that is half a size off goes back in the post. Your personalizer has to collect a size in a format the customer understands.
The engraving area is small and curved. Inside a 2 mm band there is room for a short date and initials. Inside a 6 mm band there is room for a phrase. The same field cannot carry the same limit on both.
Ring buyers are often buying two. Couple bands, his-and-hers sets and wedding bands mean one order can hold two sizes and two engravings that reference each other.
Ring size: US, UK and India systems
Ring sizes use different labels by country. The US uses numbers with quarter steps. The UK and Australia use letters with half steps. India uses its own numbers, roughly double the US figure. Underneath all of them is the same measurement: the inside circumference of the band.
| US size | UK size | India size | Inside diameter | Inside circumference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | J to J½ | 10 | 15.6 mm | 49 mm |
| 6 | L to L½ | 12 | 16.4 mm | 52 mm |
| 7 | N to N½ | 14 | 17.2 mm | 54 mm |
| 8 | P to P½ | 16 | 18.0 mm | 57 mm |
| 9 | R to R½ | 18 | 18.8 mm | 59 mm |
Published charts disagree by about half a UK letter, which is why the table shows a range. Pick one chart, use it for every product, and put the millimetre circumference next to each size so nobody has to guess.
For your size field, we suggest:
- A dropdown labelled in the system your buyers use. A US store shows "7 (US)". An Indian store shows "14 (India)".
- A second dropdown or toggle for the size system if you sell in both markets, with the size list changing to match.
- An "I don't know my size" option that adds a printable sizer or a free ring sizer to the order, so you don't lose the sale.
- A note for wide bands. A band of 6 mm or more feels tighter, so many jewelers suggest going up a quarter or half size.
Inside band vs outside engraving
Most ring engraving goes inside the band. It's private, it doesn't wear against other surfaces, and wedding buyers expect it. Outside engraving is a style choice: names on a stacking ring, coordinates on a men's band, a pattern around a signet.
Treat them as two separate fields with separate limits.
Inside band. Jewelers commonly quote 15 to 30 characters including spaces, depending on size and width. Set the limit by band width, not one number for the store. Example: "A & J 06.14.26", max 20 characters on a 4 mm band.
Outside band. Fewer characters, larger letters. Example: "ALWAYS", max 10 characters on a 6 mm flat band.
Signet face. A signet is a flat top surface, so it reads more like a pendant. Offer one to three initials as a monogram, with the font chosen by the customer. Example: "JRM", max 3 characters.
Block serif and sans-serif fonts stay readable at small sizes. Script fonts look lovely in the preview but can fill in when engraved 1.5 mm tall inside a narrow band. Offer two or three scripts that you have actually test-engraved, not all of them.
Fields to offer on a ring
Here is the field set we see work for most ring stores, with example values and suggested upcharges. Prices are suggestions at the time of writing (October 2026). Set yours from your engraver's real cost.
| Field | Type | Example values | Suggested upcharge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring size | Dropdown | 4 to 12 in quarter sizes (US) | None |
| Metal | Image swatch | 925 silver, 10K, 14K, 18K yellow, white, rose | Variant price or add-on per option |
| Inside engraving | Text, limit by width | "A & J 06.14.26" | $10 to $25 flat |
| Outside engraving | Text, max 10 | "ALWAYS" | $15 to $30 flat |
| Extra characters | Per-character fee | Past the first 10 | $0.50 to $1 each |
| Font | Font picker | 3 to 5 tested fonts | None |
| Birthstone | Image swatch | 12 months | $15 to $60 per stone |
| Second ring (couple set) | Toggle that reveals a second size and engraving | "Partner ring" | Second ring price |
| Gift box | Checkbox | Ring box | $5 to $15 |
Metal is the field with the biggest price swing. If 10K and 18K are different products to your supplier, keep them as variants. If they are the same casting with a different price, an add-on per option works and keeps your variant count low.
India-facing stores selling gold bands should mention purity on the swatch (for example "22K, BIS hallmarked") because hallmarking of gold jewelry is mandatory under BIS rules, and buyers look for it.
Couple bands and wedding sets
Couple bands are where a simple text field breaks down. You need two sizes, two engravings and often two metals in one order.
Set it up as one product with a "Set type" choice: Single ring, Matching pair, or His and hers. Choosing a pair reveals a second block of fields: Partner size, Partner metal, Partner engraving. Each engraving gets its own limit, and the preview shows whichever ring the customer is editing.
Label the fields "Ring 1 (wider band)" and "Ring 2 (narrower band)" instead of "his" and "hers", which can be wrong. And keep both engravings on the same order line as named line-item properties, so the bench reads them together.
How to set up a ring personalizer in PIMW
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers your first product with no credit card.
- Add the app block to your ring product template in the theme editor.
- Upload a clean photo of the band laid flat or a straight-on view of the inside, and draw the engraving area on it.
- Add the size dropdown, or keep sizes as Shopify variants if you already stock them that way.
- Add the inside engraving text field with a character limit that matches the band width, and pick 3 to 5 tested fonts.
- Add metal swatches with a real photo of each metal, and set any add-on price per option.
- On Pro ($13.99/mo), use conditional logic so the partner ring fields only appear when "Matching pair" is chosen.
- Set the engraving fee: flat per text area, per character past a free count, or both.
- Place a test order and open it in Shopify admin to confirm size, metal, engraving text and font all appear on the line item.
Most stores have the first ring live in about 15 minutes. The add-on fee shows as its own cart line, and there's no per-sale fee on any plan.
What the customer sees
The customer types "A & J 06.14.26" and watches it appear on the band photo in the font they picked. A counter shows "14 / 20". They switch from silver to 14K yellow and the swatch and price change. If they choose a couple set, a second engraving box opens.
PIMW previews in 2D on your own product photo. It doesn't build rings in 3D or generate engraving files, so your engraver still sets up the job from the order text.
Common mistakes with ring personalizers
- One character limit for every band. A 2 mm stacking ring and an 8 mm men's band need different limits. Set the limit per product.
- Size labels without a system. "Size 7" means different rings in the US and India. Always label the system.
- Every font switched on. Thin scripts look fine on screen and fill in on metal. Test-engrave first.
- No resize policy. An engraved ring can be hard to resize without damaging the text. Say so before checkout.
- Forgetting the second ring. Couple sets without a second engraving field lead to notes in the order comments that the bench misses.
Where rings fit with other jewelry pages
Most ring stores also sell pendants and necklaces, and the setup carries over with a bigger engraving area.
Metal choices get their own pages because they affect pricing and care. Yellow and rose karat gold sit in the gold guide.
White gold, platinum and silver bands bring their own engraving contrast and re-plating questions, covered in the white metals guide.
If you set stones, the diamond page covers lab-grown disclosure, stone swatches and pricing a stone upgrade.

Frequently asked questions
How many characters fit inside a ring band?
Jewelers commonly allow 15 to 30 characters including spaces, depending on ring size and band width. A narrow 2 mm band fits a date and initials, while a 6 mm band fits a short phrase. Set the limit per product rather than one number for the whole store.
How do I offer US, UK and India ring sizes on one product?
Add a size system choice first, then show the matching size list. Label every option with its system, such as 7 (US) or 14 (India), and show the inside circumference in millimetres so buyers can check against a ring they already own.
Should ring sizes be Shopify variants or personalizer options?
If each size is a separate stocked item or has its own price, keep it as a variant. If you make to order and the size doesn't change the price, a personalizer dropdown keeps your variant count low and still saves the size on the order.
How much should I charge for ring engraving?
Many stores charge a flat $10 to $25 for inside-band engraving and $0.50 to $1 per character past a free allowance, at the time of writing. Base it on what your engraver charges you. PIMW shows the fee as a separate cart line with no per-sale fee.
Can customers personalize two rings in one order?
Yes. Offer a set choice such as Single or Matching pair. On the Pro plan, conditional logic reveals a second size, metal and engraving field only when a pair is selected, and both engravings are saved on the order.
Does PIMW show the ring in 3D?
No. PIMW shows a live 2D preview on your own product photo as the customer types. It doesn't build rings in 3D or create engraving machine files, so your engraver sets up the job from the order details.
Can an engraved ring be resized?
Often, but resizing can stretch or cut into the engraving, especially on the inside of the band. State your resize policy for engraved rings next to the engraving field so buyers know before they order.
