A pendant personalizer lets your customer pick a shape, type the engraving for the front and back, upload a photo if the piece takes one, and see it all on your product photo before checkout. The order then reaches your bench with the exact text, font, side and image attached.
Pendants are harder to personalize than they look because the space is tiny and fixed. A 15 mm disc has room for a few letters, not a sentence. Most pendant problems we see in support come from that gap between what a customer wants to say and what the metal can hold, so this page focuses on shapes, sides, photos and limits. Our jewelry personalizer overview covers the basics every piece shares.
We build PIMW Product Personalizer, a Shopify app, and we'll show how it handles each part. Chain length and nameplate styles live on our necklace personalizer page, so we won't repeat them here.
Key takeaways
- Choose your pendant shapes first, because each shape's engraving area sets its own character limit and font choices.
- Give the front and back separate fields, preview the back, and charge for it as a second engraving setup.
- Photo pendants need close-up, well-lit, front-facing originals, so show photo tips right at the upload button.
- Use dropdowns for verse references and a required spelling checkbox on memorial pieces to avoid remakes.
Pick the pendant shapes first, then the fields
Every shape has a different engraving area, and that area sets your character limits, font choices and whether a photo makes sense. Decide your shapes before you write a single field.
| Shape | Engraving area | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round disc | Centered, curved edge | Initials, a short name, a date | Text near the edge looks cramped |
| Heart | Narrows to a point | One name or two initials | Lower third is almost unusable |
| Vertical bar | Long and thin | Names read top to bottom, dates | Long names need small letters |
| Dog tag | Wide rectangle | Two to four lines of text | Customers try to fit a paragraph |
| Oval | Portrait shape | Photos, faces, short quotes | Wide group photos crop badly |
| Cross or religious medal | Fixed artwork with small text zone | Name, confirmation date, short verse | The artwork leaves very little free space |
A simple way to show this in the store: make the shape an image swatch, and attach a different set of fields and limits to each shape. On the PIMW Pro plan, conditional logic can swap the fields when the customer picks a different shape. On a lower plan, list each shape as its own product.
Front and back engraving
Give the front and the back their own fields. Customers think of them as two messages, and your engraver needs to know which text goes where.
A typical setup for a 20 mm disc:
- Front: "M", single initial from an A to Z dropdown, or a name up to 8 characters.
- Back, line 1: "Love always", up to 12 characters.
- Back, line 2: "06.14.26", up to 10 characters.
Charge for the back. The front is usually part of the product, but the back is a second setup at the engraving machine. Flip the preview to the back when the customer clicks into a back field, or use a second product photo of the reverse side, so they can see what they're paying for.
Photo engraving on pendants
Photo pendants are a strong seller for memorial and family pieces, and they need photo upload, which starts on the PIMW Pro plan. The customer uploads a JPG, PNG or iPhone HEIC file, crops it to the frame on your product photo, and the original file is saved with the order. See our guide to adding photo upload to Shopify for the field settings.
What makes a photo engrave well is different from what makes it look good on a phone. Tell customers before they upload:
- Close-up faces work best. A full-body shot leaves the face too small to show detail on a pendant.
- Even light, sharp focus. Dark rooms and harsh sunlight both lose facial detail.
- Facing the camera. Front-on faces read better at small sizes than profiles.
- Send the original, not a screenshot. Higher resolution means more detail. One photo-jewelry maker asks for at least 400 pixels in each direction.
- Don't crop it yourself. Over-zooming throws away resolution. Let the shop crop.
Engravers convert photos to black and white before lasering, and they work best with images that have many shades from light to dark. Busy backgrounds are usually removed. Put these tips right under the upload button, not in an FAQ the customer won't open. Our list of photo upload mistakes on Shopify covers the rest.
Religious and memorial pendants
These two categories carry the most emotion and the most specific text, so plan the fields with care.
Religious pendants
Cross pendants, saint medals, Star of David, Khanda, Om and Ayatul Kursi pendants all share a pattern: fixed artwork with a small zone for a name, a date or a short verse reference. Offer the verse as a dropdown of common references ("John 3:16", "Psalm 23:1") plus an "Other" text field with a tight limit. Full verses rarely fit on the back of a medal. Our religious medal and pendant guide has more field ideas.
Memorial pendants
Memorial buyers want a name, two dates and often a photo or a short phrase. Use a date format the bench expects ("1948 to 2026" or "03.04.1948 to 01.09.2026") and say it in the placeholder. A memorial order that comes back wrong is far worse than a wrong birthday gift, so show the preview large and ask the customer to confirm spelling with a required checkbox before adding to cart. Our memorial jewelry store setup guide covers ash pendants and keepsakes too.
Size and legibility limits
Laser engraving is precise, but a laser mark only barely cuts into the metal surface. Small text on a polished pendant can look faint. That's why some engravers fill larger engravings with black oxidizing to improve contrast.
Ask your engraver for their minimum letter height and work back from it. Then set limits per shape:
| Pendant | Suggested limit per line | Lines |
|---|---|---|
| 12 to 15 mm disc | 1 to 3 characters (initials) | 1 |
| 18 to 20 mm disc | 6 to 8 characters | 1 to 2 |
| 25 mm disc or heart | 8 to 12 characters | 2 to 3 |
| Vertical bar | 8 to 10 characters, stacked | 1 |
| Dog tag | 15 to 18 characters | 3 to 4 |
These are starting points we see shops use, not standards. Test your own fonts at real size. Script fonts need more room than block fonts to stay readable, so if you allow both, set the limit for the script. Our guide to limiting characters by product type shows how to vary limits per field.
Pricing pendant personalization
Suggested at the time of writing (October 2026), for silver and gold-plated pendants:
- Front engraving: included in the price.
- Back engraving: $8 to $15.
- Photo engraving: $20 to $40, covering the editing time to prepare the image.
- Extra line on a dog tag: $3 to $6 per line.
- Birthstone accent: $5 to $15.
Keep metal (sterling silver, gold vermeil, solid 14K) as a Shopify variant so stock and price stay in one place. PIMW adds each personalization fee as a separate line in the cart, so the customer sees "Photo engraving: $30" clearly. Our jewelry personalization pricing page compares flat and per-character models.
How to set up a photo pendant in PIMW
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers your first product.
- Upload a front-facing product photo of the pendant, plus one of the back if you engrave both sides.
- Add a shape swatch if you sell several shapes from one listing.
- Add a front text field over the engraving area, set the limit and pick two to four tested fonts.
- Add back fields with their fee.
- On Pro, add a photo upload field, set the crop to the pendant's proportions and add your photo tips as help text.
- Add the app block in the theme editor and place a test order. Check that the text, side and photo file are all on the order.
Most stores have the first product live in about 15 minutes. Everything is saved as line-item properties your engraver reads from the order. PIMW doesn't prepare the engraving file itself.
Common mistakes with pendant personalizers
- One limit for every shape. A heart and a dog tag can't share a limit. Set limits per shape.
- No back preview. Customers skip the back, or pay for it without seeing it.
- Accepting any photo with no guidance. Blurry group shots make disappointed customers. Show the tips at the upload button.
- Free text for verses. Customers paste a full verse that won't fit. Use a dropdown plus a short "Other" field.
- Thin scripts at tiny sizes. Hairline fonts disappear on a small disc. Remove them for small shapes.
- No spelling confirmation on memorial pieces. A required checkbox costs nothing and saves remakes.
Where PIMW fits for pendant stores
PIMW Product Personalizer gives you live preview on the product photo, 35+ fonts, per-field character limits, image swatches and add-on fees as a separate cart line, on every Shopify plan with no per-sale fee. Plans are Free for your first product, Basic at $7.99, Pro at $13.99 and Unlimited at $24.99 a month. Photo upload and conditional logic start on Pro.
It doesn't do 3D preview or automatic engraving files. For a side-by-side look at other apps, see our jewelry personalizer comparison.
Selling photo pieces that open? Lockets need inside photos and outside engraving, which is a different setup.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters fit on an engraved pendant?
It depends on the shape and size. As a starting point, a 12 to 15 mm disc fits one to three initials, an 18 to 20 mm disc about 6 to 8 characters per line and a dog tag 15 to 18 characters per line. Check your engraver's minimum letter height and test your fonts at real size.
What photo works best for a photo engraved pendant?
A close-up, sharp, evenly lit photo of a face looking at the camera. Send the original file rather than a screenshot or a tight crop, because more resolution gives more detail. Engravers convert the image to black and white and usually remove busy backgrounds.
Should I charge extra for back engraving?
Most shops include the front and charge for the back, because the back is a second setup at the engraving machine. A suggested range at the time of writing is $8 to $15, shown as a separate line in the cart.
Can customers upload a photo for a pendant in PIMW?
Yes, photo upload starts on the PIMW Pro plan at $13.99 a month. Customers can upload JPG, PNG or iPhone HEIC files and crop them to the frame you set, and the original file is saved with the order for your engraver.
How do I handle Bible verses on religious pendants?
Offer a dropdown of common references such as John 3:16 or Psalm 23:1, plus a short Other field with a tight limit. Full verses rarely fit on a medal, so a reference is the usual choice.
Does PIMW create the engraving file for my laser?
No. PIMW saves the text, side, font and photo on the order as line-item properties and keeps the uploaded file. Your engraver prepares the laser file from those details in their own software.
