A necklace personalizer lets your customer type a name, pick a font, choose a chain length and see the result on your product photo before they pay. For you, it means the order arrives with every detail your bench needs, and fewer "can you fix the spelling" emails after checkout.
The fields change with the necklace style. A nameplate needs a font picker and a tight character limit. A bar needs front and back text. A coordinates necklace needs two formatted lines of numbers. A mom necklace needs one field per child. This page covers each one, with field examples, pricing logic and the mistakes we see most in support tickets. For a broader design walkthrough, see our custom necklace designer guide.
We build PIMW Product Personalizer, a Shopify app, so we'll show how it handles each style and say plainly where it stops. If you sell other pieces too, the rest of our jewelry personalizer guides cover rings, bracelets, earrings and more.
Key takeaways
- Each necklace style needs its own fields: a font and tight limit for nameplates, two lines for bars, a dropdown for initials and formatted fields for coordinates.
- Put a length chart beside the chain dropdown, since 16, 18 and 20 inches sit at very different spots.
- Include the first line of text in the base price and charge for what adds bench time, like back engraving, extra discs and birthstones.
- Use a name-count dropdown with conditional logic for mom necklaces so customers only see the fields they need.
What a necklace personalizer has to handle
Necklace personalization sits at the front of the body where everyone sees it, so the font basically is the product. The chain is a separate decision with its own sizes and price. Here's the text side first, for the five styles that sell most.
Nameplate necklaces
The letters are the pendant. A nameplate is cut from sheet metal in the shape of the name, so the font decides whether the piece can even be made. Thin script loops get fragile once a name passes eight or nine letters, and some letter pairs don't connect cleanly. Our name necklace maker guide shows real examples.
Offer three to six fonts you've actually cut, set a character limit your maker agrees to (we often see 10), and capitalize only the first letter in script fonts. Our guide on the best fonts for engraved products covers which scripts hold up at small sizes.
Bar necklaces
A bar is engraved, not cut, so you're working with a fixed plate. Give the customer a front line and an optional back line, each with its own limit. Example: "Front: Mia & Leo, max 14 characters. Back: 03.22.19, max 12 characters."
We go deeper on layouts in our custom bar necklace maker guide.
Initial necklaces
Use a dropdown from A to Z instead of a text box. A free text field invites "AJ" on a single-letter disc. A dropdown makes that order impossible.
Coordinates necklaces
Coordinates are two short lines of numbers, and format errors are the whole risk. Decide on one format and show it in the placeholder, for example "40.7128° N" and "74.0060° W".
Four decimal places is precise to about 11.1 metres at the equator, which is plenty to mark a house, a church or a first-date cafe. Five places gets you to about 1.11 metres but makes each line longer on a small bar. We suggest capping it at four. Our custom coordinates necklace maker guide has more layout examples.
Multi-name mom necklaces
These carry one disc, bar or heart per child, often with a birthstone each. The clean setup is a "Number of names" dropdown from 1 to 5, then show exactly that many name fields. That takes conditional logic, which starts on the PIMW Pro plan. See our walkthrough on conditional logic for Shopify products for the pattern.
On a lower plan, the workaround is one product per count (2-name, 3-name, 4-name) with a fixed set of fields on each. For design ideas, read our custom mom necklace guide.
Chain length and style options
Customers picture "18 inches" on their own neck, not your model's, so show a length chart next to the dropdown.
| Length | Common name | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| 16 in | Choker | Just above the collarbone |
| 18 in | Princess | At the collarbone, the most common length |
| 20 to 22 in | Matinee | Just below the collarbone |
| 24 to 26 in | Mid-length | At or just above the bust |
Two details to put in the size note. A pendant adds its own drop, so add one to two inches to the chain length if the customer wants the plate at a set spot. And thin chains tend to sit higher than chunky ones at the same length.
For chain style, keep the choice small. Cable, box and rope cover most personalized pieces. Box chain is a strong choice for heavier pendants. Show each style as an image swatch, because "Figaro" means nothing to most buyers until they see it. Our guide to adding image swatches to Shopify products shows the setup.
Stock finished chains by length? Use Shopify variants. Cut chain to length at the bench? A personalizer dropdown with a small fee for longer lengths is simpler.
Fields to offer, with example values and upcharges
Here's a starting field list for a necklace store. Upcharges are suggestions at the time of writing (October 2026). Test them against your own costs and market.
| Field | Field type | Example value | Limit | Suggested upcharge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Name (nameplate) | Text | Amara | 10 characters | Included in price |
| Font | Font picker | Script, serif or block | 3 to 6 fonts | Included |
| Bar front text | Text | A & J 06.14.26 | 14 to 20 characters | Included |
| Bar back text | Text | Always | 12 to 15 characters | $8 to $15 |
| Latitude / longitude | Two text fields | 40.7128° N / 74.0060° W | 12 characters each | Included |
| Children's names | 1 to 5 text fields | Mia, Leo, Ava | 8 characters each | $10 to $20 per extra disc |
| Birthstone | Image swatch | July, ruby | 12 stones | $5 to $15 per stone |
| Chain length | Dropdown | 16, 18, 20, 22 in | 4 options | $0 to $10 for longer |
| Chain style | Image swatch | Cable, box, rope | 3 options | $0 to $25 |
| Gift note | Text | Happy birthday, Mom | 150 characters | Free |
How to price necklace personalization
Put the first line of personalization in the base price. A fee for the thing the product is reads as a trick.
Charge for what adds bench time: a back engraving, an extra disc or a birthstone each gets its own fee. For long back-side text, a per-character fee past a free allowance is fair. Our sibling page on jewelry personalization pricing compares flat, per-line and per-character models.
Keep metal as a Shopify variant. Solid gold prices move with the market, and variants keep price and stock in one place.
In PIMW, add-on fees show as a separate line in the cart, so the customer sees "Back engraving: $10" next to the necklace price instead of a mystery total.
What your customer sees, and what your bench gets
As the customer types "Amara", the name renders on your product photo in the chosen font, with a live counter for characters left and swatches for chain and stone.
When they check out, each choice is saved on the order as line-item properties: "Name: Amara, Font: Script 2, Chain: 18 in cable, Birthstone: July". Your bench jeweler or fulfillment partner reads it straight from the order. PIMW doesn't produce the engraving or cutting file for you; your maker builds that from the details in their own software.
How to set up a name necklace in PIMW
Most stores get their first personalized necklace live in about 15 minutes.
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers your first product with no credit card.
- Upload a clear, front-facing product photo with the plate area easy to see.
- Add a text field, place it over the plate on the photo and set the character limit.
- Add the three to six fonts you've tested on real metal.
- Add a chain length dropdown and chain style swatches, with fees on the longer or heavier options.
- Add birthstone swatches if you offer stones.
- For mom necklaces on Pro, add the "Number of names" dropdown and conditional rules for each name field.
- Add the app block in the theme editor, place a test order and check that every property shows on the order.
Common mistakes with necklace personalizers
- Offering every font. Hairline scripts look great on screen and snap on a cut nameplate. Offer only fonts you've produced.
- One character limit for every style. A nameplate, a bar front and a disc all have different room. Set limits per field.
- A free-form coordinates box. Customers paste "40.712776, -74.005974" straight from a map app. The minus sign means west or south, and six decimals won't fit. Use two fields with a format placeholder.
- No length guide. "18 inches" means nothing without a chart. Put the chart beside the dropdown, not on a separate page.
- All caps in script fonts. Connected scripts aren't drawn for capitals in a row. Force title case on script fields.
Where PIMW fits for necklace stores
PIMW Product Personalizer gives you live preview on the product photo, 35+ fonts with scripts included, character limits, image swatches, dropdowns and add-on fees as a separate cart line. It works on every Shopify plan with no per-sale fee: Free for your first product, then Basic at $7.99, Pro at $13.99 or Unlimited at $24.99 a month. Conditional logic and photo upload start on Pro.
It doesn't do 3D preview, AR try-on or automatic engraving files. If you need those, our jewelry personalizer comparison lays out which apps offer them and what they cost.
If you also sell photo pieces, a locket needs a different setup again, with photo upload and crop shapes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular necklace length for personalized necklaces?
18 inches is the most common length and sits at the collarbone on most adults. 16 inches sits just above the collarbone and 20 to 22 inches just below. Show a length chart next to the dropdown so customers can compare.
How many characters should a name necklace allow?
It depends on the style and your maker. Cut script nameplates usually cap around 10 characters because long names get fragile, while an engraved bar front often fits 14 to 20 characters. Set the limit per field and agree it with your bench first.
How should customers enter coordinates for a coordinates necklace?
Give two separate fields for latitude and longitude with a placeholder that shows your format, such as 40.7128° N and 74.0060° W. Four decimal places is precise to about 11 metres, which is enough for a home or venue and fits a small bar.
Can I offer a mom necklace with a different number of children's names?
Yes. Add a dropdown for the number of names and show that many name fields using conditional logic, which starts on the PIMW Pro plan. On lower plans, create one product per name count instead.
Should chain length be a variant or a personalization option?
Use Shopify variants if you stock finished chains by length and track inventory. If you cut chain to length at the bench, a dropdown in the personalizer with a small fee for longer lengths is simpler.
Does the personalizer send the engraving file to my jeweler?
No. PIMW saves the name, font, chain and stone choices on the order as line-item properties. Your bench jeweler or fulfillment partner reads them and builds the engraving or cutting file in their own software.
