TL;DR
- Stack: Shopify + a sublimation POD vendor + Print It My Way.
- Method: dye sublimation — full-color, edge-to-edge, permanent; needs polyester, white/light only.
- Sizes: offer 16x16 and 18x18 (default), plus 20x20 or a lumbar option.
- Core feature: photo upload with 300 DPI validation per size + optional text/collage layout.
- Why it wins: gift-driven, personalization-native, high perceived value, no generic competitor.
5-step setup
- Create your pillow products. Add throw pillows via a sublimation POD vendor; choose sizes and cover-only vs cover-plus-insert; push SKUs to Shopify.
- Install Print It My Way. From the Shopify App Store.
- Add photo upload & text. A photo upload field with 300 DPI validation at the chosen size, plus optional text fields for names, dates, or quotes — all on a live preview.
- Add size & layout options. Conditional logic for size and layout (single photo, collage, photo-plus-text), with per-option pricing.
- Set pricing and test. Cart Transform for photo/layout fees; assign the personalizer; draft orders; verify line item properties reach your vendor.
Sizes & the resolution they demand
| Size | Best for | Min. upload (long edge) |
|---|---|---|
| 16x16 in | Smaller sofas, pairs | ~4800 px |
| 18x18 in (default) | Most sofas, the safe default | ~5400 px |
| 20x20 in | Statement / floor cushions | ~6000 px |
| 12x20 in (lumbar) | Beds, accent | ~6000 px long edge |
Bigger sizes demand higher-resolution photos. A personalizer with conditional logic can raise the required upload resolution as the customer picks a larger size, so a phone snapshot that's fine at 16x16 is rejected (with a friendly prompt) at 20x20 instead of printing soft. See photo quality for personalized products for the full validation playbook.
Why sublimation, and its rules
Custom photo pillows are made with dye sublimation: the design is heat-pressed into polyester fibers for a permanent, full-color, edge-to-edge print that never cracks or peels. That makes it perfect for photographs and full-bleed art — but it comes with rules. Sublimation needs polyester (or a high-poly blend), prints on white or light fabric only, and cannot lay down white ink. So a dark "background" in the design is fine, but you can't sublimate onto a dark-dyed pillow. Supply the file as a high-resolution sRGB image at 300 DPI for the finished size plus the vendor's bleed. Because screen and print color differ, set expectations honestly — our color matching guide covers how.
Pricing & margin
| Item | Typical retail |
|---|---|
| 16x16 cover + insert | $25-35 |
| 18x18 cover + insert | $30-45 |
| 20x20 cover + insert | $38-55 |
| Cover only (any size) | −$4 to −$8 |
Base costs run $12-22, leaving 45-60% margins. Custom pillows are gifts — memorials, weddings, anniversaries, new homes — so buyers are less price-sensitive than for generic decor. Use Cart Transform for the photo/layout add-on and bundle with a matching photo blanket or mug to lift AOV. See POD profit margins & pricing for the full math.

How do I let customers design their own pillow on Shopify?
Install a personalizer like Print It My Way on your pillow product page. The customer uploads a photo, adds optional text (name, date, quote), picks a size and layout, and sees a live preview before adding to cart. Choices save as Shopify line item properties your sublimation vendor uses to print the cover. Create your pillow products with a POD vendor, push them to Shopify, build the personalizer with photo upload + text fields plus size/layout options, then test with draft orders. No code; about 35 minutes. Because a custom photo pillow is defined by the customer's own image, the live preview closes the sale.
What print method is used for custom pillows?
Almost all custom photo pillows use dye sublimation — the design is heat-pressed into polyester fibers for a permanent, full-color, edge-to-edge print that won't crack or peel. It handles photographs and full-bleed art, but requires polyester content and prints on white or light fabric only (it can't print white ink or onto dark fabric). Some vendors offer print-both-sides or sewn-edge wraps. Supply a high-resolution sRGB image at 300 DPI for the finished cover size plus the vendor's bleed.
What size should a custom throw pillow be?
The most popular sizes are 18x18 in (the default that suits most sofas) and 16x16 in, with 20x20 in and lumbar (12x20 in) for variety. Offer two or three sizes, not many; a selector with per-size pricing keeps the page simple. Each size needs its own template and DPI threshold, since a photo sharp at 16x16 can look soft at 20x20. A personalizer with conditional logic swaps the required upload resolution as the size changes, so you never accept a file that prints blurry.
Should I sell pillow covers only or covers with inserts?
Both work; many stores offer the choice. Cover-only ships lighter and cheaper, suits buyers who own inserts or swap seasonal covers, and improves margin. Cover-plus-insert is a complete, gift-ready product — better for the gifting market, which is most of the custom-pillow audience. A clean approach: default to cover-plus-insert and offer cover-only as a lower-priced selector option. Whichever you pick, state it clearly on the product page so the buyer knows exactly what arrives.
How much should I charge for a custom photo pillow?
Typical 2026 retail is $25-45 for an 18x18 cover-plus-insert, with cover-only a few dollars lower and larger sizes a few higher. Base costs are $12-22, leaving 45-60% margins. Custom pillows are gifts — memorials, photo gifts for grandparents, wedding and anniversary keepsakes — where buyers are far less price-sensitive than for generic decor. Use Cart Transform for the photo/layout fee as a clean cart line item, and bundle with a matching blanket or mug to lift AOV.
Are custom pillows a good print-on-demand product?
Yes — they're one of the strongest home-decor POD products because they're personalization-native and gift-driven. The product only exists once the customer adds their photo or text, so it has no generic competitor and escapes the price-and-ad race. Demand is occasion-based (memorials, weddings, anniversaries, new homes, holidays), perceived value is high relative to cost, and sublimation is reliable. Get photo-resolution validation and an accurate live preview right, and pair pillows with blankets, mugs, and canvas for a coherent custom-photo-gift store.
