Why collage products are deceptively hard to sell
The promise is simple: 'upload 4 photos, get a beautiful 4-panel canvas'. The reality is messy. Customers upload photos in 4 different aspect ratios, want to swap which photo goes in which slot, want to re-crop after seeing the layout, and want to see the finished product before paying.
Products without a real collage builder either (a) accept 4 separate uploads and the team manually composes in Photoshop, or (b) lock the layout and customers complain their photos look bad. Neither scales.
Step-by-step setup
- Install Print It My Way. Multi-photo collage is a built-in field type. Install the app from the Shopify App Store.
- Open the product to collage-ify. Pick the multi-photo product — a 4-photo canvas, a 3-window family frame, or a wrap-around memory mug with 6 photo slots.
- Define the layout. In the personalizer editor, choose 'Multi-photo' field type and pick a layout — '2 photos side by side', '3 in a row', '4 grid', '6 on a mug wrap', or upload a custom layout template.
- Set per-slot aspect ratio. Each slot can have its own aspect ratio matching the physical print area. A landscape 'parents' slot can be 4:5 while a square 'kids' slot is 1:1.
- Label each slot. Give each slot a descriptive label ('Mom & Dad', 'Older kids', 'Pet') so the customer knows which photo goes where. Labels reduce the 'which slot is which?' confusion.
- Enable photo swap and per-slot crop. Customers should be able to drag photos between slots and crop each one independently. Both are toggles on the field.
- Test with mixed orientations. Upload 2 landscape and 2 portrait photos to a 4-grid layout. Confirm each slot crops correctly and the final composite preview looks clean.
Layout templates that sell
The best-selling multi-photo products use a handful of well-tested layouts. Don't overthink it:
- 2-photo side-by-side — couples canvas, before/after, wedding photo + family photo
- 3-in-a-row horizontal — three generations, three kids, three pets
- 4-grid 2x2 — most popular family canvas layout
- Wrap-around mug (6-8 small slots) — memorial mugs, kids' first year mugs
- Hero + thumbnails — one big photo, 3-4 smaller below. Wedding albums.
Offer 3-5 layouts per product max. More choices = more decision paralysis and abandonment.
Swap and re-crop — the features that make collages buyable
Two things customers always want to do after uploading:
- Move a photo — 'this should be in the center, not on the left'
- Re-crop a photo — 'I cropped too tight; let me zoom out a bit'
Both should be one tap or drag, not 'delete the photo and re-upload'. If customers have to start over to make a change, they abandon. Print It My Way's collage builder supports drag-to-swap and tap-to-re-crop directly in the preview.
The composite print file
For multi-photo products, what your printer wants is the final composite — a single print-ready file with all photos placed, cropped, and in the right positions. They don't want 4 separate files and a layout spec; that's how things go wrong.
Print It My Way generates the composite automatically. Each photo is cropped to its slot's aspect ratio, scaled to fit, and merged into a single print file at full resolution. The customer's exact layout is what prints.

Can I create my own custom layout?
Yes. Upload a layout template image showing where each photo slot should sit, set the slot positions and ratios, and the builder uses your custom layout.
What's the maximum number of photos per collage?
Currently up to 12 photos in a single layout. Past 12, customers tend to upload duplicates or abandon — but you can request more for specialized products.
Can different slots use different filters?
Yes. The hero photo can be color while the smaller thumbnails are black-and-white, for example. Each slot's filter is independent.
Does the print file preserve the exact layout?
Yes. The composite is generated at full print resolution with each photo in the position the customer placed it — no manual reassembly on your end.
Will this work for split canvases (multi-panel)?
Yes. For products that ship as separate canvases that sit side by side (split-canvas wall art), the print file is generated as separate files per panel, sized correctly for each.
