App migration

Migrating Between Product Personalizer Apps on Shopify

Your existing personalizer app is too expensive, too limited, or too slow. Here's how to switch without breaking live orders.

Why merchants switch personalizer apps

Parallel install strategy

  1. Install new app WITHOUT removing old one
  2. Both apps active but attached to different products initially
  3. Rebuild templates in new app for 1 test product
  4. Verify order flow end-to-end (order → line-item properties → POD partner receives)
  5. Migrate one product per day
  6. Once all products migrated + verified, uninstall old app

What migrates + what doesn't

Doesn't migrate:

Verification checklist per migrated product

  1. Live preview renders correctly on desktop + mobile
  2. All fields present + validation works
  3. Cart shows personalization details
  4. Order created with correct line-item properties
  5. POD partner receives the print file at correct DPI
  6. Test order printed + shipped without issue

Downtime minimization

Migrate during low-traffic hours (early morning). Have both apps ready before switching each product. Monitor Shopify order feed during migration — halt if any orders come in with malformed personalization data.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run two personalizer apps in parallel?

Yes, temporarily during migration. Attach to different products. Once fully migrated, uninstall old app to avoid app-conflict issues.

Will migrating apps break historical orders?

No. Line-item properties are stored on Shopify orders (not the app). Historical order data remains intact regardless of which apps are installed.

How long does migration between personalizer apps take?

Depends on product count. 10 products: 1-2 hours. 100 products: 1-2 weeks parallel-run before full cutover. Test one product first, replicate.

Do custom fonts transfer between apps?

No. Font files must be re-uploaded to the new app. Verify commercial licensing for each font before uploading.

Will POD partners (Printful, Printify) notice the migration?

Not if you keep the same fulfillment configuration. Line-item property format may change; verify POD partner still reads print file URL correctly.

Should I migrate during peak season (Q4)?

No. Migrate February-April or June-August when volume is lower. Q4 migration risk = disruption to your highest-revenue quarter.

What if the new app breaks on a specific product?

Keep old app installed for that product until fixed. Roll back the specific product to old app; contact new app's support with details.

How to test personalizer changes without affecting live customers?

Create a test product (draft or private), attach new app's personalizer, place test orders. Or use a staging store on Shopify Plus.

Does migration affect SEO?

No if URLs stay the same. Personalizer apps don't touch URL structure or product page HTML beyond adding their block.

How to backup existing personalizer templates?

Screenshot each template's configuration + export any settings the app offers (JSON export). Store in a shared Drive folder for reference during rebuild.
