Why leggings are different from other POD apparel
Almost all POD apparel uses placed prints (logo on the chest, design on the back). Leggings use all-over sublimation — the print covers the entire garment, follows the cut, and wraps around seams.
That changes everything about the designer flow:
- Customer artwork has to tile or fill a complex template
- Stretch distortion is real (tight stripes warp on the thigh)
- Waistband often prints separately
- Preview accuracy matters more (the customer can't visualize wrap-around easily)
Step-by-step setup
- Pick the leggings blank. Standard sublimation leggings (Printful, Printify Pro Provider). Most leggings POD blanks are 88% polyester, 12% spandex four-way stretch.
- Install Print It My Way. All-over print designer features are built in. Install from the Shopify App Store.
- Upload the print template. Sublimation leggings need a specific print template (cut layout showing the front + back panels). Get the template from your fulfillment partner.
- Set the customer canvas to match the template. Customer's design renders into the full template. Edges of the template wrap around the leg seams; account for that with edge padding.
- Allow pattern repeat OR full custom layout. Two modes: (a) customer uploads or picks a tiling pattern, app generates the full leg layout; (b) customer designs the front and back panels directly. Pattern mode is simpler; full custom is more flexible.
- Handle the waistband separately. Waistband prints separately on most blanks. Either offer it as a separate field or apply the main pattern to it automatically.
- Test for stretch distortion. Sublimation onto stretch fabric distorts slightly when worn. Tight stripes look uneven on the thigh. Tell customers to expect this; offer pattern templates designed with stretch in mind.
Sublimation is the only practical method
Other print methods don't work on leggings:
- DTG: doesn't bond to polyester
- DTF: requires flat application, leggings aren't flat
- Screen print: doesn't survive 4-way stretch
This means polyester base only (sublimation requires it). Cotton leggings POD is rare and uses different techniques.
Pattern repeat vs full custom layout
Pattern repeat mode — customer uploads or picks a pattern (florals, geometric, animal print). The app tiles it across the leg template. Simpler for customers, faster to set up.
Full custom layout mode — customer designs the front and back panels directly. Strip on the side, custom panel on the thigh. More flexible but harder for non-designer customers.
Most POD leggings stores offer pattern repeat by default and full custom as an opt-in for designer-tier customers.
Stretch distortion
Sublimation on 4-way stretch fabric distorts when worn. Tight horizontal stripes warp. Curves stretch. Plan for this:
- Recommend pattern designs (less obvious distortion than straight lines)
- Test with worn samples
- Set customer expectations on the product page
Sizing matters more than usual
Leggings sizing is unforgiving. Different blanks fit differently. Provide a precise sizing chart with measurements (waist, hip, inseam) AND a fit-finder quiz if you can.
Leggings POD pricing
Sublimation leggings cost $18-28 from Printful/Printify. Retail $40-75. Margin lower than other POD apparel but consistent demand year-round (especially fitness-positioned).

Can I print on cotton leggings in POD?
Cotton legging POD is rare. Sublimation (the standard all-over print method) requires polyester. Cotton legging POD uses placed-print methods (DTG) which limit you to small placed designs, not full-coverage prints.
What's the standard leggings POD blank?
88% polyester / 12% spandex 4-way stretch is the industry standard for sublimation leggings. Printful, Printify, and other major POD partners use this construction.
How do I handle stretch distortion?
Set customer expectations on the product page (tight horizontal stripes will warp slightly when worn). Recommend pattern designs over straight-line designs. Test with worn samples.
Should the waistband match the leg print?
Configurable. Most stores apply the main pattern to the waistband automatically. Some offer a separate waistband design field for more flexibility.
What's the leggings POD margin?
Tighter than other POD apparel. Cost $18-28, retail $40-75 — margin 40-55% typical. Volume and consistent demand make up for the per-unit margin.
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers most small stores; paid plans unlock higher order volume, advanced features like Cart Transform per-character pricing, premium fonts, and white-glove support. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does Print It My Way take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.
Does Print It My Way work with Shopify Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus?
Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Some advanced features like Cart Transform (per-character pricing) and B2B company accounts require Shopify Plus, but the core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners. The customer's personalization data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives the print files automatically.
Does Print It My Way support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
