Print-on-demand app vs personalization app: what's the difference?
Print-on-demand apps (Printful, Printify, Gelato, Gooten) handle fulfillment. They print your product on demand and ship it directly to the customer. Personalization apps (Print It My Way, Zepto, Teeinblue) handle the customer's design input: text, photo, monogram, on the storefront. If you sell custom POD products, you need both. Personalization app captures the design; POD app prints and ships it.
Step-by-step setup
- Identify what you need. Fulfillment (POD) or customer design capture (personalization)?
- Install both if selling custom POD. POD app + personalization app work together.
- Print It My Way ties them together. Native pipes to Printful, Printify, Gelato.
What a POD app does
- Adds products to your Shopify catalog from the POD catalog
- Generates mockup images automatically
- Receives order details from Shopify at checkout
- Prints your product on demand
- Ships directly to the customer
- Handles returns per their policy
Examples: Printful, Printify (both under Fyul parent brand since Nov 2024), Gelato, Gooten, CustomCat, SPOD.
What a personalization app does
- Adds custom-input fields to your product page (text, upload, monogram)
- Shows live preview of the customer's design
- Captures the design as line-item properties
- Generates print-ready files (PNG, PDF)
- Passes files to POD partner via integration
Examples: Print It My Way, Zepto, Teeinblue, Customily, Zakeke.
How they work together
- Customer visits your store
- Personalization app shows the product with custom-input fields
- Customer types name, uploads photo, picks font
- Personalization app generates the print file
- Customer adds to cart, checks out
- Order arrives with line-item properties (design URL, custom text)
- POD app reads the order + line-item properties
- POD app prints the product with the customer's design
- POD app ships to the customer
Print It My Way ties them together
Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, and Gelato. The design captured on the storefront flows to fulfillment automatically. Other personalization apps require manual configuration per POD partner.

Do I need both a POD app and a personalization app?
For custom POD products, yes. POD handles fulfillment; personalization handles customer design input.
Can a POD app do personalization?
Some (Printful, Printify) have basic personalization built in, but the depth and preview quality are less than dedicated personalization apps.
Which POD app for Shopify?
Printful (quality-first), Printify (cost + variety), Gelato (local NA fulfillment). All work with Print It My Way.
Do the two apps talk to each other?
Yes via Shopify line-item properties. Personalization app writes them; POD app reads them.
What if I fulfill in-house (not POD)?
You just need a personalization app. Print files download from the admin as PDFs or PNGs.
