The print on demand Christmas gifts that sell best are the ones a shopper can picture under one specific person's tree: a mug with Mom's name, a matching set of pajamas for the couple, an ornament with the dog's face on it. Sort your catalog by recipient, price it so a $5 to $15 blank still leaves you a margin after shipping, and publish your order cut-off dates before your customers ask.
This guide is the merchant's working list. For each recipient group you get the products that fit, what the blanks cost at the time of writing (October 2026), and which ones gain the most from personalization. The second half covers the operational side that decides whether December goes well: provider cut-off dates, sample timing, gift notes and gift wrap.
If you want the demand picture first, our post on personalized Christmas gift trends for 2026 ranks the categories and explains why they move. This page assumes you already know Christmas is coming and need to decide what to list and when to stop promising delivery.
One rule runs through all of it. Every date and base price below comes from a provider page we read in October 2026. Prices change and providers update their deadlines every year, so treat the numbers as a starting point and check your own dashboard before you set prices.
Key takeaways
- Sort your Christmas catalog into recipient collections (parents, couples, kids, pets, coworkers) and show strong products in more than one.
- Most POD gift blanks start between about $5 and $15 before shipping in October 2026, so price from the real base cost plus shipping.
- Pet portraits, photo blankets, first-Christmas ornaments and family pajamas only sell with personalization, so build those flows first.
- Providers publish 2026 cut-offs from mid-October; plan with the 2025 dates (Printful US standard Dec 11) and set your store cut-off a few days earlier.
How to build a Christmas gift catalog by recipient
Shoppers don't search for "ceramic mug, 11 oz." They search for "gift for my dad," "gift for coworkers under $20" or "dog mom Christmas present." If your collections match how people think about their list, your store does the sorting for them.
We suggest five collections to start: parents and grandparents, couples, kids, pets and pet owners, and coworkers. Each one has a natural price band and a natural kind of personalization.
You don't need 200 products. Eight to fifteen strong ones, each shown inside two or three recipient collections, beats a huge catalog nobody can browse. A personalized mug can sit in "For Dad," "For Grandma" and "Coworker gifts" with a different hero image and copy in each.
Base costs for popular POD Christmas gifts
These are starting prices for the blank plus printing, before shipping, as listed by the providers in October 2026. Printify figures are the "from" prices on its public product pages, with the Printify Premium price where the page shows one. The Printful figures come from its candle and ornament product pages.
| Product | Starting base cost (Oct 2026) | Suggested retail range | Personalization value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic mug, 11 oz | From $4.93 on Printify ($3.68 with Premium) | $16 to $25 | High: names, photos, inside jokes |
| Ceramic ornament | From $4.93 on Printify; $6.15 on Printful | $14 to $22 | Very high: names, year, photo |
| T-shirt | $8.80 (Gildan 5000) to $10.98 (Bella+Canvas 3001) on Printify | $22 to $32 | Medium: family names, matching sets |
| Hoodie or sweatshirt | Roughly $13.91 to $25.56 on Printify, by blank | $38 to $55 | Medium |
| Fleece or sherpa blanket | From $6.76 on Printify (smallest size) | $35 to $80 | Very high: photo collages |
| Pillowcase | From $9.57 on Printify ($7.37 with Premium) | $25 to $40 | High: photos, pet faces |
| Socks | From $7.25 a pair on Printify | $18 to $26 | High: face socks, pet socks |
| Tote bag | From $5.94 on Printify | $18 to $28 | Medium: names, monograms |
| Scented soy candle | $9.66 to $13.21 on Printful | $24 to $36 | Medium: custom label text |
| Pet bandana | About $13 to $17 on Printify, by provider | $20 to $30 | Very high: pet name |
The retail column is our suggested starting range, not a rule. Your price depends on shipping, your ad costs and how much personalization you offer. Bigger sizes, two-sided prints and premium blanks all cost more than the "from" price.
What to sell for each recipient
Parents and grandparents
This is the biggest and least price-sensitive group. Adult children buy for parents, and grandparents get gifts from the whole family, so one order can carry several names.
What works:
- Photo blankets and photo pillowcases with a family picture.
- Mugs that say "Grandma" with the grandkids' names underneath.
- Ornaments with the family surname and the year.
- Candles with a custom label, a good pick for the shopper who wants something useful.
Personalization pays off most here. A blank "World's Best Dad" mug competes with every store on the internet. A mug with "Dad" and the names of three kids competes with nobody. Photo upload matters too, because the strongest grandparent gifts are pictures of the grandkids. If you plan to sell those, give shoppers a product personalizer with live preview so they see the crop before they pay.
Couples
Couples gifts sell in pairs, which raises your order value without extra ad spend. Matching items are the core of the category.
What works:
- Matching mugs or a two-mug set with both names.
- Matching pajamas or sweatshirts with "Mr." and "Mrs.", initials or a shared date.
- An ornament marking a first Christmas together, married or engaged.
A first-Christmas ornament with the couple's names and the year is one of the clearest personalization wins in the whole season. We cover the build in our guide to the custom ornament maker for Christmas.
For matching sets, decide early whether you sell one product with two text fields or two products bundled together. One product with two names is simpler to fulfill and ships as one item. Our couples and family mug set guide shows how to set up the two-field version.
Kids
Kids gifts are usually bought by parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. The child's name is the product.
What works:
- Name sweatshirts and tees, often in a family set with matching adult sizes.
- Christmas pajamas with the child's name.
- Storybook-style blankets with a name.
- Ornaments with "Baby's First Christmas" and the year.
Family pajamas deserve a special mention because one order can include four or five garments in different sizes. That's a big basket, but it's also where mistakes hurt most. A wrong size or a misspelled name on one piece ruins the photo moment. Show the name on the actual garment in preview, set clear character limits, and repeat the sizes back in the cart. Our family Christmas pajama designer post goes through the setup.
Pets and pet owners
Pet gifts work two ways: gifts for the pet, and gifts for the person who loves the pet. The second group is bigger and spends more.
What works:
- Pet portrait blankets, pillowcases and ornaments made from an uploaded photo.
- Bandanas with the pet's name.
- Mugs and socks printed with the pet's face for the owner.
Pet products are close to useless without personalization. Nobody wants a stranger's dog on a pillow. That makes photo upload, background removal and a good crop step the main features here. If you're building a store around this, read our POD pet product trends for 2026 before you pick blanks.
Coworkers and secret santa
This group is all about price. Most office gift exchanges set a limit, and shoppers buy several at once.
What works:
- Mugs with a team name, a job title or an office joke.
- Socks and tote bags under $25.
- Ornaments with a company or team name for a whole department.
Personalization still helps, but keep it light: one text line, a few font choices, and a price that clears a $20 or $25 gift limit with shipping. For larger orders from a manager buying for a whole team, quantity pricing and a bulk name list make life easier. Our corporate branded merch guide covers that side.
Which gifts gain most from personalization
Not every product needs a full design tool. Here's how we'd rank the categories by how much a name or photo changes what the customer will pay and how likely they are to buy.
| Tier | Products | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Must personalize | Pet portraits, photo blankets, first-Christmas ornaments, family pajamas | The product only makes sense with the buyer's own name or photo |
| Personalize for a clear lift | Mugs, socks, pillowcases, kids name apparel | A generic version exists, but the personal one is easy to justify at a higher price |
| Optional | Candles, tote bags, coworker gifts | A text line helps, but price and design carry the sale |
| Usually skip | Trend-only design tees | The design is the product; personalization adds support work for little gain |
That ranking also tells you where to spend setup time. Build the full photo and text flow on the must-personalize products first. Add a single name field to the middle tier. Leave the rest as normal listings.
On Shopify, an app like PIMW Product Personalizer adds the text fields, fonts and photo upload to your existing product pages and saves each customer's choices on the order, so Printful, Printify or Gelato receive them with the order. If you're new to the idea, our explainer on what a product personalizer is covers how it works. Charging a small personalization fee is normal; our guide on how to charge for personalization explains the options.
Holiday cut-off dates: what the providers have published
Your customer cares about one date: the last day to order for delivery by December 25. That date is your provider's production time plus shipping, minus a buffer. Get it wrong and you spend the week before Christmas answering "where is my order" emails.
At the time of writing (early October 2026), the major POD providers had not all published their 2026 holiday deadlines. Printify says its deadlines are usually announced by the middle of October, on its network fulfillment status page. Here's what was published for the 2025 season, which gives you a planning baseline:
| Provider or carrier | Route | Published deadline | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printful | US-fulfilled apparel and home goods to US, standard | Dec 11 | 2025 |
| Printful | US-fulfilled apparel and home goods to US, express | Dec 16 | 2025 |
| Printful | Fulfilled outside US to US, standard | Nov 26 | 2025 |
| Printful | Knitwear, standard only | Nov 15 | 2025 |
| Printify | USA, standard (varies by print provider) | Dec 9 to Dec 15 | 2025 |
| Printify | Canada, standard | Dec 3 to Dec 10 | 2025 |
| Printify | Europe and UK, standard | Nov 21 to Nov 27 | 2025 |
| USPS | Ground Advantage, contiguous US | Ship by Dec 17 | 2026 |
| USPS | Priority Mail, contiguous US | Ship by Dec 18 | 2026 |
Printify's 2025 dates aimed for delivery by December 24 and came with a warning to use them with caution, because carriers get delayed at peak. Gelato publishes its own recommended last order dates by product and shipping method on its order deadlines page.
Two things to take from this. First, the USPS dates are the day a parcel has to be handed to the carrier, not the day your customer orders. Your provider still needs several business days to print. Second, international routes close weeks earlier than domestic ones. If you sell to Europe or the UK from a US-focused setup, your real cut-off can land before Thanksgiving.
What we recommend:
- Set your store cut-off two to three days earlier than the provider date. Personalized orders need time for you to catch typos and bad photos.
- Show the cut-off in an announcement bar, on product pages and in the cart.
- Once standard shipping closes, switch to express only, then to digital gift cards.
- Update the dates the day your provider publishes 2026 numbers.

Sample timing: order this week, not in December
You can't sell what you haven't seen. A photo blanket can look sharp in the mockup and muddy in real life, and a script font that looks elegant on screen can become a blur at mug size.
Order samples of every product you plan to promote in October. Printful gives 20% off sample orders on its free plan and 25% on its Growth plan, with one sample order a month of up to three items at the start. Printify sample orders are regular orders shipped to your own address, at the Premium price if you subscribe.
Use samples for three checks:
- Print quality on your darkest and lightest designs.
- How the personalization looks at real size: long names, script fonts, a low-resolution phone photo.
- Product photos. Your own photos of a real sample usually beat a stock mockup in ads.
If a sample disappoints in October, you can still switch blanks before Black Friday.
Gift notes and gift wrap
Christmas buyers often ship straight to the recipient. That raises two questions: can they include a message, and will it arrive looking like a gift?
Gift notes
Most POD providers let you add a branded packing slip with a store-wide message and logo. Printful's packing slip message is free and set in your store branding settings. A per-order gift message is a different thing. Printful's help center describes gift messages for manual and API orders and for Etsy orders, so check how your own Shopify setup passes them before you promise one.
Gelato handles per-order gift notes through a printed packaging insert: you set it up as a hidden product with your own price, and only one insert is allowed per order. If your provider can't print a personal message, be honest at checkout and offer an emailed gift message or a printable card instead.
Gift wrap
True gift wrapping is rare in POD. Most providers ship in poly or paper mailers. Printful supports custom branded mailers at some facilities for a picking fee plus storage, but not custom gift boxes. You can still sell a gift wrap add-on if it means something you can actually deliver, such as a branded insert or a paper gift bag ordered as its own item. Our guide on how to add a gift wrap option to Shopify products shows the setup.
A Christmas launch checklist for POD stores
Work through this in order, most of it by the end of October.
- Pick 8 to 15 products and sort them into recipient collections.
- Order samples of each and test long names, script fonts and phone photos.
- Price each product from the real base cost plus shipping, with room for discounts on Black Friday.
- Add personalization to the must-personalize products, with live preview and character limits.
- Write recipient-led product copy: "for Grandma," "for the dog mom," "under $25 for coworkers."
- Draft your cut-off banner now, with blanks to fill when providers publish 2026 dates.
- Decide what you offer for gift notes and wrapping, and say it plainly on the product page.
- Plan the post-cutoff switch to express shipping and gift cards.
- Schedule extra time each day in December to review personalized orders before they go to print.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best print on demand Christmas gifts to sell?
Personalized ornaments, photo blankets, name mugs, family pajamas, pet portrait products and custom socks are the steadiest sellers. They work because each one carries a name or photo that ties it to one person. Pick 8 to 15 strong products and sort them by recipient rather than listing hundreds.
When should I start selling Christmas products on my POD store?
List your products and order samples in October so you can check quality before Black Friday. Most holiday buying happens from late November to mid-December, and provider cut-offs for US standard shipping fell around December 9 to 15 in 2025.
What is the last day to order print on demand gifts for Christmas?
It depends on the provider, product and shipping route. For the 2025 season, Printful listed December 11 for US-fulfilled standard orders and December 16 for express, and Printify listed December 9 to 15 for US standard depending on the print provider. Check the 2026 dates when providers publish them, usually from mid-October.
How much do POD Christmas gifts cost to make?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Printify mugs start at $4.93, ceramic ornaments at $4.93, socks at $7.25 a pair, totes at $5.94 and blankets at $6.76 for the smallest size, before shipping. Printful soy candles run $9.66 to $13.21. Larger sizes and premium blanks cost more.
Should I order samples before the holidays?
Yes. Samples show you how your darkest designs, long names, script fonts and phone photos actually print. Printful offers 20% off sample orders on its free plan. Order them in October so you have time to switch blanks if one disappoints.
Can print on demand orders include a gift message?
Often, but not always automatically. Most providers support a branded packing slip with a store-wide message, and Gelato supports per-order gift notes through a packaging insert. Check how your provider handles Shopify gift messages before you promise one at checkout.
Do POD providers offer gift wrap?
True gift wrapping is rare. Most providers ship in poly or paper mailers, and Printful supports custom branded mailers but not gift boxes. You can sell a gift add-on such as a branded insert or a paper gift bag, as long as you describe exactly what arrives.
Which Christmas gifts benefit most from personalization?
Products that make no sense without the buyer's own details: pet portraits, photo blankets, first-Christmas ornaments and family pajamas. Mugs, socks and kids name apparel also gain a clear lift from a name or photo. Trend design tees usually don't need it.
