Print on demand Christmas decorations are a short, intense season. The main POD providers make ornaments, stockings, tree skirts, pillows, blankets, door mats and calendars, with base costs that start around $4 for a metal ornament and run past $40 for a tree skirt. You don't hold stock. The provider prints and ships each order after the customer pays.
The products that sell best are the ones with a name or a year on them. A plain red ornament competes with every big-box store in the country. An ornament that says "The Garcias, Christmas 2026" competes with almost nobody.
The hard part isn't the product list. It's timing. Personalized decor has to be designed, ordered, printed and delivered before December 25, and the provider deadlines for standard shipping land in late November and the first half of December.
This guide covers what Printful and Printify actually list, what each product costs at the time of writing (October 2026), which items carry personalization well, the published holiday cut-offs and a week-by-week launch plan. We build a Shopify personalization app, so we also cover how the name and year get from your product page to the print file.
Key takeaways
- Printful and Printify both make ornaments and stockings, and ornaments carry the best margin, from about $4.61 base cost.
- Personalized items with a family name or the year sell best, and stocking sets with a name per stocking raise order value.
- Printful's most recent published US deadlines (2025 season) were December 11 standard and December 16 express; Printify posts its 2026 dates around mid-October.
- Set your store cut-off two to three days before the provider deadline so you can fix typos and photo problems.
What Christmas decorations POD providers actually offer
We checked the Printful and Printify catalogs in October 2026. Both cover the core Christmas range, but not every item exists at both ("Not confirmed" means we couldn't verify a listing, not that it's missing), and some things merchants ask us about (advent calendars, light-up decor) aren't standard POD products at either.
| Product | Printful | Printify | Base price from (Oct 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metal ornament | Yes | Yes | $4.61 (Printful), $4.65 (Printify) | Printful's ships to the US only |
| Ceramic ornament | Yes | Yes | $4.93 to $7.58 (Printify) | Two-sided glossy print on some styles |
| Wooden ornament | Yes | Not confirmed | about $8 to $10 (Printful) | Two-sided UV print, six shapes |
| Acrylic ornament | Yes | Yes | $12.46 (Printify) | Clear, shatter-resistant |
| Glass ornament | Yes | Not confirmed | $19 single (Printful) | Round only, UV printed |
| Christmas stocking | Yes | Yes | $16.83 (Printify), $17.17 (Printful) | Plaid cuff, about 10 x 16 in |
| Tree skirt | Yes | Not confirmed | $43.95 (Printful) | Fleece, 44 in diameter |
| Throw pillow | Yes | Not confirmed | $13.75 (Printful) | Cases from $11.50 |
| Throw blanket | Yes | Yes | about $26 to $46 (Printful) | Printify lists a woven blanket |
| Door mat | Yes | Not confirmed | about $26 (Printful) | Coir |
| Wall calendar | Yes | Yes | $7.18 (Printify, 2027 dated) | Desk calendars from $6.88 |
Prices move often and vary by provider, size and fulfillment location. Printify prices drop by roughly a quarter with its Premium plan. Treat the table as a starting point and check the live catalog before you set retail prices.
A few things we couldn't confirm as standard POD items: advent calendars with doors or pockets, light-up signs and wreaths. If those are part of your plan, you'll need a local maker or a specialist supplier rather than Printful or Printify.
Printful or Printify for decor?
Printful makes most products in its own facilities, so quality and packaging tend to be consistent from order to order. Printify is a marketplace of print providers, so the same ornament can come from several partners at different prices and speeds. That gives you lower base costs, but you should sample from the exact provider you plan to use.
For a small decor range, the simplest choice is to keep every product in a bundle with one provider. Mixing providers in one order means two shipments, two shipping charges and two chances for a delay. Gelato is a third option if you sell into Europe or want calendars and wall art printed close to the customer, though we couldn't confirm a Christmas ornament or stocking in its range.
Base costs and a first look at margin
Base price is only part of what you pay. Shipping for decor is often a bigger share of the cost than it is for a T-shirt, because stockings, mats and tree skirts are bulky.
| Product | Base cost (example) | Shipping to US (from) | Example retail to test | Notes on margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic ornament | $7.58 | varies by provider | $19 to $24 | Best margin in the range |
| Wooden ornament | about $9 | about $5 | $22 to $28 | Two sides, so add a photo back |
| Stocking | $17.17 | from $7.79 | $34 to $42 | Sell in sets of 3 to 5 |
| Tree skirt | $43.95 | from $7.79 | $79 to $95 | High ticket, fewer orders |
| Door mat | about $26 | from about $20 | $59 to $69 | Shipping eats the margin |
The retail column is our suggestion for testing, not a market average. Your own price depends on your audience and ad costs.
The pattern is clear. Ornaments carry the best ratio of price to cost. Door mats look appealing until you add the shipping. Tree skirts work as a premium item but won't carry your store on volume.
Which decorations sell best with personalization
Personalization does two jobs in December. It raises what a shopper will pay, and it turns a commodity into a keepsake people buy again next year. These are the items where it fits most naturally.
Ornaments
The classic is the family ornament: surname, first names and the year. Close behind come "Baby's First Christmas" with a name and date, first Christmas as a married couple, a pet's name and a memorial ornament for someone who's gone.
The year matters more than you'd think. A dated ornament is a reason to buy a new one every December, which a generic design isn't. Our longer guide to building a custom Christmas ornament designer online covers layouts, fonts and photo upload in detail.
Stockings
Stockings sell in groups. A family of four wants four stockings, each with a different name, all in the same style. That's the single best argument for personalization in the whole category: the same design, a different name per item.
Set a sensible character limit (10 to 12 characters usually fits the cuff) and offer two or three fonts, not twenty. If you want a deeper look at apps for this, see the best Shopify Christmas stocking personalizer comparison.
Tree skirts
A tree skirt with the family surname and an "Est." year is a gift-for-the-household item. It's high priced, so expect fewer orders, but each one is worth a lot more. Keep the text near the outer edge where it shows under the branches.
Pillows and blankets
Pillows and throws carry photo personalization well. A family photo blanket or a "Christmas at Grandma's" pillow with the grandchildren's names is a common December gift. The trade-off is file quality: customers upload phone photos, so you need minimum resolution checks before the order is placed.
Door mats
A welcome mat with "Merry Christmas from the Johnsons" is a simple seller, but the bulky shipping pushes the retail price up. It does best as a bundle with an ornament or stocking, where the shipping cost is spread over a bigger order.
Calendars and countdown items
True advent calendars aren't a standard POD item at Printful or Printify. What you can sell is a photo wall calendar for the coming year. Printify lists 2027 dated wall calendars from $7.18. A family photo calendar ordered in early December makes a good last gift, as long as it ships in time.
Holiday production and shipping cut-offs
Here's the part that catches new stores. The provider deadline is the last day to submit the order to the provider, not the last day your customer can order. If your customer orders on the deadline day and you take a day to review the personalization, you've missed it.
At the time of writing, Printify hadn't published its 2026 dates yet. It says holiday deadlines usually appear by the middle of October on its network fulfillment status page. Printful's deadline guide is titled for 2026 but was published in November 2025, so the dates below are the 2025 season. Use them as a planning baseline and replace them as soon as the 2026 dates go live.
| Provider and route | Standard shipping | Express or priority | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printful, US to US, home and living | Dec 11 | Dec 16 | 2025 dates |
| Printful, made outside US, to US | Nov 26 | Dec 14 | 2025 dates |
| Printify Choice (US) | Dec 10 (economy Dec 5) | not listed | 2025 dates |
| Printify, SPOKE Custom Products (US) | Dec 10 (economy Dec 5) | Dec 12 | 2025 dates |
| Printify, District Photo (US) | Dec 11 (economy Dec 8) | Dec 12 | 2025 dates |
| USPS Ground Advantage, contiguous US | Dec 17 | Priority Mail Express Dec 19 | 2026 dates |
Canada and international routes close earlier. Printify's 2025 Canada dates ran from late November to about December 10, and some international routes closed as early as November 18.
Printful also notes that when an order mixes product categories, the earliest category deadline applies to the whole order. Printify added a $0.40 holiday surcharge to US orders in the 2025 season, running through January 17, 2026. Expect something similar this year.
Set your own cut-off earlier than the provider's
For personalized decor we tell merchants to set their store cut-off two to three days before the provider deadline. That buffer covers:
- typos the customer asks you to fix after ordering
- low-resolution photos you need to request again
- a weekend between the order and your next review
- a provider that is running behind in December
Put the date on every product page, in the cart and in your emails. "Order by December 8 for Christmas delivery (US standard)" is clearer than any vague "order early" banner.
Your launch timeline for print on demand Christmas decorations
You can start in October and still have a full season. Here's how we'd plan it from today.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Early October | Pick 3 to 5 products. Order samples of each, with real names printed on them. |
| Mid October | Check the samples. Set up personalization fields, fonts and character limits. Take your own photos. |
| Late October | Publish the products. Start organic posts and small ad tests. Check Printify's 2026 deadlines once they're posted. |
| Early November | Scale the products that get add-to-carts. Build bundles (ornament plus stocking set). |
| Late November | Black Friday and Cyber Monday push. International cut-offs start closing. |
| First week of December | Send the "last order date" email. Show the cut-off on every product page. |
| Mid December | Standard shipping closes. Switch to express-only messaging or digital gift cards. |
Samples are the step people skip. Order them. A name that looks fine on screen can be too thin to read on a 3-inch ornament, and a stocking cuff may print smaller than the mockup suggests.
Worked example: a family stocking and ornament bundle
Say you sell a set of four personalized stockings and one family ornament. Using the October 2026 prices above and an assumed shipping cost:
- Four Printful stockings at $17.17 each comes to $68.68.
- One Printify ceramic ornament at $7.58. Note this ships from a different provider, so you'd pay shipping twice. To keep it simple, source both from one provider.
- Assume about $14 in combined shipping for the order. Check the real rate in your provider's calculator.
- Total cost is roughly $90.
- Sell the bundle at $149, with free shipping. Your gross margin before ads, app fees and payment fees is about $59, or around 40%.
Now compare a single stocking sold at $38 with $7.79 shipping. You keep about $13 on that order. The bundle earns far more per customer, and the shopper gets a matching set, which is what most families want.
The bundle only works if each stocking can carry a different name. That's where the product page setup matters.
How the name and year get to the printer
On Shopify, the usual way to collect a name is a text field on the product page. The problem with a plain text box is the shopper can't see how "Christopher" fits on a stocking cuff until it arrives.
A product personalizer with live preview shows the name on the product as the customer types, with the fonts and colors you allow. PIMW Product Personalizer is the app we make. It adds that preview, character limits, a choice of 35+ fonts and an optional add-on fee shown as its own line in the cart. Plans start free for your first product, then $7.99 a month, with no per-sale fee.
The personalization is saved on the order as line-item properties. That's what lets your POD partner read the name and year and print it. PIMW connects with Printful, Printify and Gelato, and most merchants have a first personalized product live in about 15 minutes.
A few setup rules we've learned from December support tickets:
- Make the year a dropdown, not free text, so nobody orders "Christmas 2062".
- Put a character counter on name fields and set the limit from your sample, not the mockup.
- Use conditional fields for bundles: pick "Set of 4" and four name fields appear.
- Add a line under the button: "Names print exactly as typed. Check spelling."
Pre-launch checklist
Before you turn on ads, run through this list:
- Samples ordered and checked for every product, with a long name printed
- Character limits set from the sample
- Year field as a dropdown with the current year selected
- Provider deadlines checked for 2026 and your store cut-off set two to three days earlier
- Cut-off date on product pages, cart and emails
- Shipping rates checked for bulky items (mats, skirts, blankets)
- Bundles built for stockings and ornaments
- Photo upload rules set (minimum size, accepted formats) for pillows and blankets
- A test order placed through to your POD partner to confirm the name arrives on the order
Christmas decor rewards stores that start early and keep the range small. Pick the products where a name or a year makes the item worth keeping, get the samples right and put the cut-off dates where customers can't miss them.
Frequently asked questions
What Christmas decorations can you sell with print on demand?
Printful and Printify both make ornaments (metal, ceramic, wood, acrylic and glass at Printful), Christmas stockings, throw blankets and calendars. Printful also lists a fleece tree skirt, throw pillows and a coir door mat. Advent calendars with doors, light-up decor and wreaths aren't standard POD items at either.
How much do print on demand ornaments cost?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Printful's metal ornaments start at $4.61, Printify's ceramic ornaments start between $4.93 and $7.58, and Printful's glass ornament is $19. Printify prices drop with its Premium plan. Shipping is extra, so check the live catalog before setting prices.
What is the Printful Christmas deadline?
Printful's latest published dates are from the 2025 season: for products made and shipped in the US, December 11 for standard and December 16 for express. Orders made outside the US closed November 26 for standard shipping. Check Printful's deadline page for the 2026 dates.
When does Printify publish its holiday deadlines?
Printify says its holiday order deadlines are usually announced by the middle of October on its network fulfillment status page. In 2025, US standard deadlines for its larger providers fell between December 10 and 11, with Canada and international routes closing earlier.
Which Christmas decorations sell best personalized?
Family ornaments with names and the year, baby's first Christmas ornaments, stocking sets with a different name on each stocking, and tree skirts with a surname. The year gives customers a reason to buy a new ornament every December.
When should I launch a Christmas POD store?
Order samples in early October, publish by late October and scale in November before Black Friday. International and knitwear deadlines close in mid to late November, and US standard shipping closes in the second week of December.
How do I add names to Christmas stockings on Shopify?
Use a personalization app that adds a name field with a live preview and a character limit to the product page. The name saves on the order as a line-item property, which your POD partner reads to print it. For sets, conditional fields can show one name field per stocking.
