Why catalog-wide tooling matters at scale
A store with 5 personalized products can configure each by hand in 10 minutes. A store with 200 personalized products configuring each by hand takes a full week — and stays out of sync forever when you decide to add a new feature.
Templates and bulk-apply turn personalization configuration into a one-time setup that scales. Add a new product? Apply the template, override two fields, done. Change a font across the catalog? Update the template, push to all. Sustainable.
Step-by-step setup
- Install Print It My Way. Bulk-apply is a built-in admin tool. Install the app from the Shopify App Store.
- Build a 'template' personalization on one product first. Set up one product perfectly — fields, validation, conditional logic, upcharges, preview mockup. This becomes your template. Treat it as the gold standard.
- Save the template. From the personalizer editor, click 'Save as template' and name it (e.g. 'Engraved jewelry — standard').
- Apply the template to similar products in bulk. From the admin, select multiple products (by collection, by tag, or hand-picked) and apply the template. Print It My Way replicates the config across all selected products.
- Handle per-product overrides. Some products need slight variations (different character limits, different mockup image). Override at the product level — the template provides defaults, the per-product config overrides where needed.
- Test 5-10 products after bulk apply. Don't trust without verifying. Open 5-10 of the bulk-applied products on the storefront and confirm the personalizer renders correctly with all expected fields and validation.
- Use 'update template' for catalog-wide changes. When you need to change a font globally or add a new upcharge across all engraved products, update the template once and 'push to all linked products'. Saves rolling out changes one at a time.
Designing templates for reuse
Group products by personalization pattern, not by category. Templates that work:
- Engraved jewelry — standard — one text field, font picker, per-character pricing. Applies to bracelets, rings, pendants, necklaces.
- Photo print — standard — image upload, crop, filter, quality check. Applies to canvas, mugs, ornaments, photo books.
- Multi-side apparel — front + back text fields, color swatches, per-side pricing. Applies to t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags.
3-5 well-designed templates can cover 80%+ of personalized products in most catalogs.
Collection-level vs product-level rules
Collection rules apply to every product in a Shopify collection automatically. Useful for:
- New products auto-getting personalization on add (any new 'Engraved Jewelry' product gets the standard template)
- Catalog-wide pricing tier updates
- Seasonal promotions (holiday upcharge fields across all Christmas-themed products)
Product-level overrides handle the cases where a single product needs special treatment without breaking the collection rule.
Rolling back a bad bulk update
Bulk operations occasionally break things. Make sure your tooling supports:
- Preview before apply (see what will change on each product)
- Undo within a window (revert the bulk change if it broke something)
- Per-product restore (re-pull the previous config for a single product without affecting others)
Print It My Way supports all three — bulk operations are versioned and undoable for 30 days after the change.

Can templates inherit from each other?
Yes. A 'Premium engraved jewelry' template can extend the 'Standard engraved jewelry' template, adding premium-finish upcharges on top. Changes to the base propagate.
What happens to products linked to a template if I delete the template?
Linked products keep their current config but lose the link to the template — future template changes won't affect them. Print It My Way warns before deleting a template that has linked products.
Can I bulk-apply to a Shopify collection?
Yes. Select 'All products in collection X' and the template applies to the entire collection, including new products added later if you enable auto-apply.
Does bulk-apply respect existing customer-facing changes?
By default it overwrites. You can flag certain fields as 'preserve per-product' so per-product customizations survive a bulk re-apply.
How do I track which products use which template?
The admin shows a template-to-product map — see which products use which template, when they were last synced, and any products with overrides.
Is Print It My Way free to install?
Yes. Print It My Way is free to install from the Shopify App Store. The Free plan covers most small stores; paid plans unlock higher order volume, advanced features like Cart Transform per-character pricing, premium fonts, and white-glove support. There is no upfront fee and no credit card required to install.
How long does Print It My Way take to set up?
Most stores set up their first personalized product in under 15 minutes. The Shopify App Store install takes about 60 seconds; adding text fields, photo upload, color swatches, and live preview to a product takes 5-10 minutes. Catalog-wide rollout (50+ products) uses bulk-apply templates and typically takes 30-60 minutes total.
Does Print It My Way work with Shopify Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus?
Yes. Print It My Way works on every Shopify plan including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus, and Shopify Starter. Some advanced features like Cart Transform (per-character pricing) and B2B company accounts require Shopify Plus, but the core personalization fields, live preview, and order capture work on every tier.
Does Print It My Way slow down my Shopify store?
No. Print It My Way uses Shopify's storefront block architecture, which loads only on personalized product pages and doesn't add render-blocking scripts site-wide. Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals scores on personalized product pages stay green when the app is configured with default settings.
Does Print It My Way work with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other POD partners?
Yes. Print It My Way has native integrations with Printful, Printify, Gelato, and other major print-on-demand partners. The customer's personalization data flows through Shopify's standard order pipeline, so any partner that reads line-item properties (which all major POD apps do) receives the print files automatically.
Does Print It My Way support Shopify Markets, multiple currencies, and multiple languages?
Yes. Field labels translate per language, upcharge prices can be set per currency, and the personalizer fully supports right-to-left languages including Arabic and Hebrew. The personalizer also handles Unicode for Cyrillic, CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean), Greek, and accented Latin characters with appropriate font fallback.
