Native multi-currency vs manual per-variant pricing
Shopify Markets supports two multi-currency modes: (1) auto-conversion, which takes your base-currency price and converts to the buyer's presentment currency using yesterday's FX rate + your configured rounding rule, and (2) manual per-market pricing, where you set an exact price per currency per variant via CSV upload. Auto-conversion is one line of setup and produces awkward local prices; manual gives you psychologically anchored prices but requires uploading a price list per currency. Serious international sellers use manual for products that matter and auto for the long tail.
Shopify Markets Pro (added Q3 2024)
Shopify Markets Pro is a paid add-on ($99/month or 1.75% of Markets revenue, whichever is higher) that layers merchant-of-record services, local payment methods, tax compliance, and duty calculation on top of Markets. For multi-currency variant pricing specifically, it adds the ability to price variants per-currency without manual CSV uploads — Markets Pro handles auto-rounded psychological prices per currency using currency-specific ending rules (.99 for USD/EUR/GBP, whole hundreds for JPY, etc.).
Setting per-variant per-currency prices manually
Without Markets Pro, upload a per-market price list via Settings → Markets → your market → Pricing → Adjust prices → Export CSV.

Upload the CSV. Shopify uses these exact prices per currency instead of auto-converting. Update the CSV per season or when your COGS shifts materially.

Variant pricing and personalization option pricing
Multi-currency variant pricing covers the base variant. Personalization option fees (via Cart Transform) are a separate layer — see currency-specific pricing on options. Both layers need to align: if your USD variant is $29.99 and your EUR variant is €29.99 (same nominal number), your USD option fee of $5.99 should be €5.99, not €5.55 auto-converted.
Compare-at price per currency
Compare-at (strikethrough / MSRP) prices support per-currency too. Set them in the same CSV. This is important for markets where you offer a permanent discount vs the "list price" — Germany buyers expect to see the retail price crossed out; Japan buyers expect to see the list price alone.
How Shopify picks the presentment currency
Shopify Markets determines presentment currency from the buyer's IP-based country → market → default currency mapping. Users can override via a currency selector in the storefront. When a buyer changes currency mid-session, Shopify recalculates all prices instantly using either your manual per-currency prices or the auto-conversion rules.
Frequently asked questions
What are multi-currency variants on Shopify?
Variants that have manually set prices per currency instead of auto-converted prices. A shirt priced at $29.99 (USD) can be priced at €29.99 (EUR) and ¥4,500 (JPY) with all three set manually — not derived from the base USD price via FX.
Do I need Shopify Plus for multi-currency variants?
No — Shopify Markets on any plan supports manual per-currency variant pricing via CSV upload. Shopify Markets Pro ($99/month or 1.75% of Markets revenue) adds automated psychological-price rounding.
What is Shopify Markets Pro?
A paid add-on that layers merchant-of-record services, local payment methods, tax compliance, duty calculation, and automated currency-specific rounding on top of Shopify Markets. Priced at $99/month or 1.75% of Markets revenue, whichever is higher.
How often does Shopify update auto-conversion FX rates?
Once per day, ~5am UTC, using the previous day's mid-market rate. This is why serious international sellers prefer manual per-currency pricing — auto rates can shift 2-3% overnight and change customer-facing prices.
Should personalization option fees match variant currency pricing?
Yes — align the two layers. If your USD variant is $29.99 and EUR variant is €29.99, your USD option fee of $5.99 should be €5.99 (not €5.55 auto-converted). Use Cart Transform per-currency option pricing to enforce this.
Can I set compare-at prices per currency?
Yes — the per-market price CSV includes both regular and compare-at price columns per currency. Useful for markets where "MSRP crossed out" is the cultural norm (Germany, US) vs list-price-alone markets (Japan).
How does Shopify decide which currency to show a buyer?
Geo-IP → market → market's default currency. Buyers can override via a currency selector in the storefront. Prices recalculate instantly on override using either your manual per-currency prices or auto-conversion.
