Percentage pricing

Shopify Percentage Add-On Pricing — Complete Setup Guide

Percentage-based fees scale with product value — a 20% rush fee is $10 on a $50 t-shirt but $200 on a $1,000 ring. Best for fees where cost scales with value: rush production, premium finish, insurance. Here's the 2026 setup.

Setup with Print It My Way

  1. Install Print It My Way Basic ($7.99/mo — percentage pricing supported)
  2. Personalizer → field settings → Pricing tab → Pattern: Percentage
  3. Enter percentage (20)
  4. Optional: Set min fee ($10) + max fee cap ($500)
  5. Attach field to product
  6. Test — verify Cart Transform reads base price + applies percentage correctly

Min/max caps prevent extreme pricing

Without caps, percentage produces awkward numbers on very cheap or very expensive products:

Both caps help. Print It My Way Pro supports min + max. Basic tier supports max only.

Percentage of what? Line vs cart total

Two scopes:

Configure per field. Print It My Way defaults to line-scope; toggle to cart-scope for delivery/insurance add-ons.

Display strategy

Show both percentage AND dollar amount:

"Rush production: +$40 (20% of base price)"

Percentage builds understanding + trust; dollar amount is what customer pays. Live update as customer configures options that change base price.

Percentage + tier + variant combined

Full pricing flow example: 50 branded mugs at Silver metal upgrade with rush production:

  1. Base variant price: 11oz mug $8
  2. Silver metal upgrade variant: 11oz Silver Mug $12 (variant pricing)
  3. Quantity 50 = Tier 2 discount -10%: $10.80 each
  4. Rush production percentage +20%: $12.96 each
  5. 50 units × $12.96 = $648 total

Cart Transform applies in this order: variant → tier discount → percentage. Cart shows breakdown transparently.

Tax handling

Percentage fees inherit product tax rate. Shopify Tax auto-computes. No separate tax config needed.

For US: fee taxed at product's jurisdiction rate. For EU VAT: fee treated as part of same supply, same VAT rate as product. For Canada GST/HST: applies to fee at product rate.

Frequently asked questions

How to set percentage add-on on Shopify?

Cart Transform via personalizer app (Print It My Way Basic $7.99/mo). Field → Pricing tab → Pattern: Percentage → enter %.

When percentage vs flat fee?

Percentage for fees that scale with product value (rush, warranty, complex design). Flat for fees with fixed cost (gift wrap, custom color match).

Standard rush production percentage?

15-25%. 20% is most common. Verify with POD partner's actual rush cost to preserve margin.

Can I cap percentage fee?

Yes. Max $500 typical prevents extreme fees on very expensive orders. Print It My Way Pro supports min + max; Basic supports max only.

Percentage of line or cart total?

Line-scope for product-specific fees (rush, finish, warranty). Cart-scope for order-wide add-ons (white-glove delivery, insurance).

Combining percentage with variant + tier?

Cart Transform applies in order: variant price → tier discount → percentage. Cart shows breakdown transparently.

Show percentage or dollar amount?

Both. Percentage builds understanding; dollar amount is what customer pays.

Does percentage fee include tax?

Yes — fee inherits parent product's tax rate. Shopify Tax handles automatically.

Best app for percentage pricing?

Print It My Way (all tiers native). Bold Product Options. Both handle Cart Transform equivalent on non-Plus.

Percentage on multi-currency store?

Works correctly — percentage applies to converted variant price. Print It My Way handles currency conversion via cost.amountPerQuantity.
