The best font for engraving is one with strokes thick enough for your engraving method and letters that stay open at the final size. For most products that means a clean sans-serif (Montserrat, Arial Bold, Futura, Roboto) or a bold serif for a classic look. Use a script with confident, wide strokes (Great Vibes or Alex Brush at larger sizes) for names and monograms. On personalized jewelry and thin rings, block letters read best, and jewelers keep script for wider bands. For rotary, diamond-drag and Cricut engraving, use single-line fonts instead of regular outline fonts.
This guide covers the best fonts by material and engraving method, what major jewelers offer for ring and necklace engraving, minimum sizes, and the licensing rule that matters most if your customers pick fonts in your store. Facts come from jewelers', laser makers' and font licensors' own pages, checked in October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Clean sans-serifs (Montserrat, Arial Bold, Futura, Roboto) are the safest engraving fonts; use bold serifs and thick scripts at larger sizes.
- On personalized jewelry, offer two or three styles (block, Roman, script) and use block capitals on thin rings; ring limits of 15 to 20 characters are common.
- Rotary, diamond-drag and Cricut engraving need single-line fonts such as Hershey fonts or Cricut Writing fonts.
- If customers pick fonts in your store, use open-license fonts like Google Fonts; Adobe Fonts' terms don't allow customer-selected fonts.
Quick picks: best fonts for engraving

| Use | Good font choices | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small text on metal, wood or glass | Montserrat, Arial Bold, Helvetica, Futura, Roboto | Even, solid strokes stay readable at small sizes |
| Classic, formal engraving | Garamond, Playfair Display, Georgia, Trajan, Baskerville | Elegant serifs, best at medium to large sizes |
| Names and wedding pieces | Alex Brush, Great Vibes (large sizes), Allura, Pacifico | Script style with strokes thick enough to engrave |
| Bold headlines and signs | Bebas Neue, Arial Black | Tall, heavy letters for short words |
| Traditional "engraved" look | Engravers Gothic, Engravers MT, Engravers Old English | Designed in the engraving tradition |
| Rotary, diamond-drag, Cricut | Hershey Sans, Hershey Script, Cricut "Writing" fonts | Single-line letters, no outline double-cut |
| Thin rings and small charms | Block capitals (a simple sans-serif) | Script letters run together on narrow bands |
These font lists come from laser engraving makers OneLaser and Thunder Laser, which both name sans-serifs such as Arial, Helvetica, Montserrat, Roboto and Futura as the most reliable choices.
What makes a font good for engraving
Engraving removes, burns or scratches material, so the thinnest part of each letter decides whether it survives.
- Stroke width: OneLaser's rule of thumb is that a stroke should be at least twice your machine's beam spot size. For a CO2 glass-tube laser with a spot of about 0.25 mm, it says strokes near 0.5 mm are reliably safe.
- No hairlines: Thunder Laser warns that fonts with extremely thin lines, excessive flourishes or tightly packed characters engrave poorly. Thin serif ends are the first thing to disappear at small sizes.
- Open spacing: letters that nearly touch can merge once engraved, especially on wood, where the burn spreads.
- Scripts with confident strokes: OneLaser recommends scripts with wide connecting strokes, not delicate hairline flourishes.
- Size: as a guide from Custom Ink, use at least 8 pt on metal and wood and 10 pt on slate, and keep serif fonts to 10 pt and up. Always test on the real material.
Best fonts for engraving personalized jewelry

Personalized jewelry (rings, name necklaces, bar bracelets, charms and pendants) has the smallest engraving area of any product, so font choice matters most here.
What well-known jewelers offer:
| Jeweler | Engraving options | Character limit |
|---|---|---|
| Tiffany & Co. (US online) | Block, Roman, Script, French Script and Italic Roman styles | Up to 3 uppercase initials online |
| Blue Nile | Block and script styles; it says Roman is the most popular style for engagement rings | Depends on ring size and style |
| Brilliant Earth | Script and block, on wedding rings only | 15 characters for women's rings, 20 for men's |
| Pandora | A selection of fonts and sizes online, more fonts and a hand-drawn option in store | Up to 3 lines; length depends on font and size |
What this means for your store:
- Offer two or three styles, not twenty. The biggest jewelers offer a short list: usually a block, a classic serif (Roman) and a script.
- Use block letters on thin bands. Brilliant Earth only engraves wedding rings at least 1.4 mm wide, and Blue Nile notes that particularly dainty or thin rings may not be suitable for engraving. On narrow bands, script letters run together, so offer block capitals there.
- Set character limits by product. Ring limits of 15 to 20 characters are common, and the real limit depends on the ring size and the font. Our guide to adding a character counter on Shopify shows how to enforce it.
- Keep one font per piece. Blue Nile advises sticking with one font for consistency.
- Limit symbols. Brilliant Earth offers a heart, infinity and degree symbol. Decide which symbols your engraver can do and only offer those.
- Say whether engraving is final. Tiffany, for example, does not accept returns of engraved items, so put your policy next to the engraving field.
Name necklaces are cut from the font itself rather than engraved, so the letters must connect. Choose a script where every letter joins the next, and avoid fonts with separate dots or thin joins that would break.

Best fonts for laser engraving wood, metal, glass and slate

| Material | Works best | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Bold sans-serif, chunky serif, thick script | Hairline serifs and tiny text; the burn spreads |
| Anodized aluminum and coated metal | Almost any clean font, including smaller sans-serif text | Very fine scripts under about 8 pt |
| Stainless steel (marked) | Clean sans-serif, bold serif | Dense, ornate scripts |
| Glass | Simple sans-serif, larger sizes | Fine detail and filled areas that frost unevenly |
| Slate and stone | Bold sans-serif or slab serif, 10 pt and up | Thin serifs and small script |
| Leather | Bold sans-serif or thick script | Very small text |
Treat this table as a general guide: results depend on your machine, settings and the exact material, so test every font before you offer it.
Raster or vector? Laser software engraves text in two ways:
- Raster engraving fills the letters line by line like a printer. Trotec says raster suits filled areas such as filled letters. Use it for most text.
- Vector engraving follows the outline. Trotec says it suits thin-line work. On Epilog machines, a vector line thinner than 0.004 in is cut, not engraved.
So for text, raster-engrave filled letters unless you specifically want an outline or a single-line effect. Our explainer on what laser engraving is for print on demand covers the machines and materials.
Single-line fonts for rotary, diamond-drag and Cricut engraving
Rotary engravers, diamond-drag tools, CNC machines and Cricut machines follow a path with a tool tip instead of filling an area. Regular fonts are outlines, so the tool traces around each letter and you get a hollow, "bubble" look.
- Cricut says engraving works best with designs made from single lines, like Draw images or Writing style fonts. Use the "Writing" filter in the font list. Cut-style fonts get engraved along their outline.
- Hershey fonts are single-stroke fonts available through the Hershey Text extension in Inkscape (Extensions > Render). Shaper Tools notes that only the fonts marked "1-stroke" or "EMS" are true single-line fonts.
- LightBurn supports SHX fonts, an old Autodesk format for CNC machines that can define single-line letters. LightBurn doesn't ship SHX fonts, so you point it to a folder that has them.
Font licensing: the rule personalized stores often miss
When you engrave and sell products, the font's license matters, and it matters even more when customers choose the font in your store.
- Google Fonts are safe for commercial engraving. Google says all its fonts are open source and can be used commercially, including in products you sell. The SIL Open Font License FAQ explicitly lists laser-cut shapes and rubber stamps as allowed uses, with no extra permission or attribution needed. Montserrat, Roboto, Playfair Display, Great Vibes, Alex Brush, Allura, Pacifico and Bebas Neue are all on Google Fonts.
- Adobe Fonts allow merchandise, but not customer-chosen fonts. Adobe's licensing FAQ allows the fonts on commercial merchandise, but says its terms don't permit uses where your customers select and apply fonts to their own text as part of the design. If your product page has a font picker, use open-license fonts or a license that explicitly covers it.
- Desktop and "free" download-site fonts vary. Read each license, and keep a copy with your product files.
How to offer font choices on Shopify

- Pick three or four fonts that you've test-engraved on the real product: for example one sans-serif, one serif and one script.
- Show each font as a swatch with sample text, so customers see the style before they choose.
- Set a character limit per product and font. Scripts take more space than block capitals.
- Add a live preview so customers see their text in the chosen font on the product and catch typos.
- Charge for extra text if it costs you more. Our guide to per-character engraving pricing shows the setups.
- Send the font name with the order, so whoever engraves uses exactly what the customer chose.
PIMW Product Personalizer (our app) lists engraving text, font choice and a live preview among its features, and its text fields and live preview work on every plan, including Free. Our guide to adding product options in Shopify compares other ways to set this up, and our guide to starting a custom engraving business on Shopify covers the equipment side.
Your engraving font checklist
- Choose fonts for your material and method: solid sans-serifs for small text, bold serifs and thick scripts for larger text.
- Use single-line fonts for rotary, diamond-drag and Cricut engraving.
- Offer block capitals on thin rings and small charms; keep script for wider surfaces.
- Test-engrave every font at your smallest allowed size.
- Set character limits per product and font.
- Use open-license fonts (such as Google Fonts) if customers pick the font.
- Show fonts as swatches with a live preview, and send the font name with each order.
The best engraving font is the one that still looks right after the laser, the diamond or the engraver's tool has done its work. Test it on the real product before you offer it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best font for engraving?
A clean sans-serif with solid strokes, such as Montserrat, Arial Bold, Futura or Roboto, is the most reliable, especially for small text. For a classic look use a bold serif like Playfair Display or Garamond, and for names a script with thick strokes like Great Vibes or Alex Brush at larger sizes.
What is the best font for engraving personalized jewelry?
Block capitals for thin rings and small charms, and a script or Roman serif on wider bands and pendants. Jewelers like Tiffany, Blue Nile and Brilliant Earth offer a short list of block, Roman and script styles rather than many fonts.
How many characters can you engrave on a ring?
It depends on the ring size, width and font. Brilliant Earth allows 15 characters on women's wedding rings and 20 on men's, and only engraves wedding rings at least 1.4 mm wide. Block letters fit more readable text than script.
What font size is best for laser engraving?
Test on your material, but as a guide use at least 8 pt on metal and wood and 10 pt on slate, and keep serif fonts to 10 pt and up. OneLaser's rule is that each stroke should be at least twice your laser's beam spot size.
What fonts work for Cricut or rotary engraving?
Single-line fonts. Cricut recommends its Writing style fonts for engraving, and Hershey fonts (through Inkscape's Hershey Text extension) give true single-stroke letters. Regular outline fonts get traced around the edge, giving a hollow look.
Can I use any font to engrave products I sell?
No, check the license. Google Fonts are open source and can be used on products you sell. Adobe Fonts allow commercial merchandise but don't allow uses where your customers choose fonts for their own text, so a store with a font picker should use open-license fonts.
