To sell custom t-shirts online, you need four things: a design or personalization idea people want, a print partner that prints and ships each shirt after it's ordered, a Shopify product page that lets customers pick a size and add their own details, and a price that still makes money after the shirt, the print, shipping and payment fees. With print on demand you hold no stock and pay nothing until a customer pays you.
T-shirts are the easiest custom product to start with and the hardest to stand out in. Everyone sells them. The stores that do well either have designs for a specific group of people, or let customers make the shirt their own: a name, a number, a photo, a date.
This guide walks through every step with real numbers. Base prices, shipping rates, file specs and policies below come from the providers' own catalog data and help centers, checked in October 2026. Prices move and some vary by color and location, so check them again before you set yours. There's also a section for sellers in India, with local print partners and the current GST rule.
Key takeaways
- A Bella+Canvas 3001 with a front print cost $11.29 to $12.25 at Printify and Printful in October 2026, and a Gildan 5000 from $7.50, plus about $4.95 US shipping.
- Personalization often means a second print area: a name on the back adds $5.95 at Printful, so price it as an upgrade.
- A personalized 3001 sold at $34.99 with free shipping leaves about $10.53 after base cost, back print, shipping and Shopify Payments fees, before ads.
- In India, local partners such as Printrove and Qikink print from about ₹165 to ₹200 per blank with COD, and t-shirts up to ₹2,500 carry 5% GST.
Is selling custom t-shirts still worth it?
Yes, if you go in with a plan. Grand View Research estimates the global custom t-shirt printing market at $6.3 billion in 2026, growing to about $9.8 billion by 2030. Digital printing, the kind print-on-demand partners use, is the fastest-growing part of it.
The bigger question is what shoppers pay for one custom shirt. In October 2026, Custom Ink quoted $32.25 for a single Gildan Softstyle tee and $36.25 for a single Bella+Canvas tee, with free shipping and delivery in about two weeks. Vistaprint advertised one budget Gildan tee from $10. So there's room in the middle for a store that offers a better design, faster shipping or real personalization at $25 to $35.
What doesn't work anymore is a generic "funny quote" shirt with no audience. Pick a group you understand (teachers, runners, a sports team, a family reunion, dog owners of one breed) and design for them.
Decide what you're selling: designs, personalization or both
There are three kinds of custom t-shirt stores, and each needs a slightly different setup.
Your own designs. You create the artwork, customers pick a size and color. Your edge is the design and the audience. The product page is simple.
Personalized shirts. Customers add their own name, number, date, photo or short text. Think team jerseys, matching family shirts, birthday shirts, bachelorette shirts. Your edge is that nobody else can sell them that exact shirt. The product page needs fields and a preview.
Both. A design you made, plus one personal detail, such as a team shirt with each player's name on the back. This is often the best of both: your design does the selling, the name closes it.
Personalized shirts tend to support higher prices, because the customer can't compare them line for line with a shirt on Amazon. They also come with more chances for mistakes, so the setup section below matters more.
Choose a print method

How the design gets onto the shirt changes what you can sell, at what quantity and on which fabrics.
DTG (direct to garment). An inkjet printer prints straight onto the shirt. Printful says DTG is best on cotton and other natural fabrics, and can be cheaper for small, one-off orders because it needs little setup. This is what most print-on-demand t-shirts use, and it handles photos and many colors well.
DTF (direct to film). The design is printed on film and heat-pressed onto the shirt. It works on polyester, cotton, fleece, nylon and blends, and stays bright on any fabric color. Printful notes it can feel slightly plastic and stiff at first.
Screen printing. Ink is pushed through a stencil, one screen per color. It's cheap per shirt at volume but has minimums. Vistaprint's screen-printed tees start at 6 shirts, and Printful's screen printing starts at 500 shirts per order. It suits team and event orders, not one-off personalized shirts.
Embroidery. Thread stitched into the fabric, great for small logos and monograms. At Printful you pay a one-time digitization fee of $2.95 to $6.50 per design, plus $2.95 for each extra embroidered placement.
For a new store selling single personalized shirts, start with DTG on cotton, and keep screen printing for bulk team orders. Our screen printing vs DTG break-even guide shows where the switch makes sense.
Pick a blank and a print partner
The blank is the shirt before printing. Two blanks cover most stores: the Bella+Canvas 3001 (soft, lightweight, retail fit) and the Gildan 5000 (heavier, cheaper, classic fit).
Here is what the main print-on-demand partners charged for one shirt with a front print in October 2026, in USD, for sizes up to XL:
| Partner and blank | Base cost (S-XL) | 2XL | 3XL | Avg. production time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Printful, Bella+Canvas 3001 | $12.25 (some colors $11.92) | $13.75 | $15.25 | 2-5 business days |
| Printful, Gildan 5000 | $7.50 (some colors $9.44) | $8.95 | $10.50 | 2-5 business days |
| Printify Choice, Bella+Canvas 3001 | $11.29 | $13.82 | $16.12 | 1.4 days |
| Printify Choice, Gildan 5000 | $9.68 | $11.77 | $12.91 | 1.3 days |
| Printify (Monster Digital), Bella+Canvas 3001 | $11.77 | $14.38 | $16.77 | 0.8 days |
A few things the table doesn't show:
- Extra print areas cost extra. At Printful, a back print adds $5.95, each sleeve $2.49 and an inside label $0.99. If your personalization is a name on the back, that's a second placement, and you need to price it in.
- Plus sizes cost more. Every partner charges more for 2XL and up, so price your bigger sizes separately.
- The Bella+Canvas 3001 is thin. Printful's own product notes call the 4.2 oz fabric slightly sheer, so mention it on your page if you sell light colors.
- Discount plans. Printify Premium ($24.99 a month billed yearly) cuts the Printify Choice 3001 to $9.04. Printful's Growth plan ($24.99 a month, free once you pass $12,000 a year in sales) promises up to 33% off product prices.

Prepare print-ready files
Blurry or badly cropped prints are the top reason customers complain about custom shirts. The partners publish clear rules:
- Printful: at least 150 DPI (and no need to go above 300), PNG with a transparent background, sRGB color.
- Printify: JPEG, PNG or SVG, 300 DPI recommended, up to 100 MB. Its file guide suggests building a front design at 4500 x 5400 pixels at 300 DPI (a 15 x 18 inch area) as a transparent PNG.
To work out pixels, multiply inches by DPI. A 12 x 16 inch front print at 150 DPI needs 1800 x 2400 pixels. At 300 DPI it's 3600 x 4800.
For personalized shirts, the customer's text is added on top of your design, so plan for it. Leave a clear space for the name, set a character limit so long names don't run off the print area, and pick fonts that stay readable when printed. If customers can upload photos, warn them when a photo is too small for the print size. Our apparel design mistakes guide covers the problems we see most.
Price your t-shirts

Shipping is a real cost on every order, so build it into your price or charge it at checkout. US shipping in October 2026:
| Partner | First shirt | Each extra shirt | Delivery time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printful (flat rate) | $4.95 | $2.20 | 3-4 business days after fulfillment |
| Printify Choice (standard) | $4.95 | $2.40 | 2-5 business days |
| Printify Choice (economy) | $3.99 | $2.09 | 4-8 business days |
Here is a worked example for a personalized Bella+Canvas 3001 from Printful, with your design on the front and the customer's name on the back:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Base cost with front print (S-XL) | $12.25 |
| Back print for the name | $5.95 |
| US shipping, first shirt | $4.95 |
| Your price, free shipping | $34.99 |
| Shopify Payments fee (2.9% + 30¢, Basic plan) | $1.31 |
| What's left before ads and app costs | $10.53 |
The same shirt with a front print only, sold at $29.99, leaves about $11.62. A Gildan 5000 front-only shirt at $24.99 leaves about $11.52, because the blank is cheaper.
How to set your own prices:
- Price personalization as an upgrade. If the name goes on the back, the back print costs you $5.95. Charge for it, either built into a "personalized" price or as an add-on fee.
- Price every size band. A flat price across S to 3XL quietly loses money on the big sizes.
- Compare with the shops your buyers know. At $32 to $36 for one shirt from Custom Ink, a $30 to $35 personalized tee with faster delivery is easy to justify.
- Leave room for ads. If you plan to advertise, the $10 to $12 left per shirt has to cover them, so test prices before you scale.

Set up the product on Shopify

A custom t-shirt has two kinds of choices, and they go in different places.
Variants for what changes the cost or stock: size and color. Shopify allows up to three options per product and up to 2,048 variants, so 6 sizes in 10 colors (60 variants) is no problem. Give 2XL and up their own prices.
Personalization for what the customer creates: name, number, date, photo, short message. These can be anything, so they don't belong in variants. They're saved on the order as line item properties, which your print partner can read. Our guide to t-shirt options on Shopify explains the setup in more detail.
A good personalized t-shirt page has:
- Size and color (variants), with a size chart right next to the size buttons.
- Text fields with a clear label ("Name on back, max 12 characters") and a character limit.
- A font and color choice, kept to a few options that print well.
- Photo upload, if you sell photo shirts.
- A live preview showing the customer's text on the shirt.
- An add-on fee for back prints or extra names.
With PIMW Product Personalizer (our app), text fields, the live preview and add-on fees work on every plan, including Free, and photo upload is on the Pro and Unlimited plans. Whatever tool you use, place a test order and check that your print partner receives the name exactly as typed, in the right place and size.

Selling custom t-shirts from India

If you sell to customers in India, Indian print-on-demand partners print locally, support cash on delivery and are much cheaper to ship. Here is what they published in October 2026:
Printrove. 180 GSM, 100% combed cotton round-neck tee from ₹165 (up to XL), ₹180 for 2XL and ₹200 for 3XL. Printing is charged by area, from ₹0.8 per square inch for DTG on white shirts (minimum ₹80). Shipping is ₹60 per 500 g, and cash on delivery adds ₹50. Printrove's own example for a size L shirt with a 10 x 10 inch print comes to ₹327.75 prepaid or ₹377.75 with COD, including 5% GST. COD covers more than 26,000 pin codes, and its Shopify app pulls in orders automatically.
Qikink. 180 GSM, 100% super-combed cotton round-neck tee in sizes XS to 7XL, from about ₹190 to ₹200 including 5% GST. Qikink's sample costs show an A3 DTG print at ₹145 and an A4 DTF print at ₹80, putting a printed shirt at roughly ₹334 to ₹456 before shipping. Surface shipping is ₹50 per 500 g and COD is ₹40.12 per order. Its Shopify integration handles both prepaid and COD orders.
Blinkstore. Free plan, a Shopify plugin, dispatch within 48 hours and delivery in 6 to 8 days. It ships within India only and, at the time of writing, does not offer cash on delivery.
A few India-specific points:
- GST on t-shirts. Since 22 September 2025, garments priced at ₹2,500 or less per piece are taxed at 5% GST, and those above ₹2,500 at 18%, according to the government's release on the 56th GST Council decisions. Nearly every custom tee falls in the 5% band.
- Payments. Shopify Payments isn't available in India, so you'll use a third-party payment provider. On the Basic plan, Shopify adds a 2% fee on those transactions.
- Shopify cost. Shopify Basic costs ₹1,994 a month billed monthly, or ₹1,499 a month billed yearly.
- Plan for COD. Many Indian buyers expect cash on delivery. It adds a per-order fee and some orders get refused at the door, so price with that in mind.
Our guide to print on demand on Shopify in India covers the market in more depth.
Avoid trademark and copyright trouble
T-shirts are where most print-on-demand stores get into legal trouble, usually by accident.
- Don't use other people's brands, characters or logos. Team logos, cartoon characters, band names and brand slogans are protected. Printify's rules ban brand logos and counterfeit goods, and both Printful and Printify can suspend accounts that get repeated infringement notices.
- Check customer uploads and text. When customers add their own text or photos, you're still the one selling the shirt. Printify says you may only use images you own or have the right to use. Add a short line at the upload step and keep an eye out for logos and famous characters.
- Protect your own brand. The USPTO says a trademark can be a word, phrase, symbol or design, and you don't have to register it to use the TM symbol. It also warns that a big slogan across the front of a shirt may be refused as "merely ornamental", while a small mark on the chest or neck label reads more like a brand.
- Copyright starts when a design is created. The US Copyright Office says original work is protected from the moment it's created and fixed. That protects your designs, and it's why you can't copy someone else's.
Our POD copyright and trademark guide goes into more detail.
Cut returns with sizing and clear expectations
Neither Printful nor Printify will reprint a shirt because the customer picked the wrong size or color. Both cover genuine defects reported within 30 days of delivery. So every wrong-size return comes out of your margin.
- Put a size chart with measurements in inches and centimeters next to the size buttons, not in a tab nobody opens.
- Say how the blank fits. The Bella+Canvas 3001 is a slimmer retail fit, the Gildan 5000 is roomier.
- Show the preview before checkout and ask customers to check the spelling of names. A misspelled name they typed is not a misprint.
- Explain your policy in plain words: what you'll replace (misprints, damage) and what you won't (wrong size chosen, typos).
Your custom t-shirt launch checklist
Before you open the store:
- Pick a specific audience and three to five designs or one personalized product for them.
- Choose one blank and order samples from two print partners. Wash them.
- Prepare transparent PNG files at the right size, with a clear space for names.
- Price each size band, including extra print areas and shipping.
- Set size and color as variants, and names, numbers and photos as personalization fields.
- Add a live preview, character limits and an add-on fee for back prints.
- Add a size chart with measurements and a fit note.
- Place a test order and check the print file your partner receives.
- If you sell in India, connect a local partner with COD and price for the COD fee.
- Check every design and customer upload for logos and characters you don't own.
Get those right and you have a store that can take its first order this week, without buying a single shirt up front.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start selling custom t-shirts online?
With print on demand you can start for the cost of a Shopify plan and a few samples. In October 2026 Shopify Basic cost $39 a month (or $29 billed yearly), and a sample Bella+Canvas 3001 from Printful cost $12.25 plus $4.95 US shipping. You pay for each shirt only after a customer orders it.
What is the profit on a custom t-shirt?
On a Printful Bella+Canvas 3001 with a front print sold at $29.99 with free US shipping, about $11.62 is left after the shirt, shipping and Shopify Payments fees. Adding a back print for a name costs $5.95 more, so a $34.99 personalized shirt leaves about $10.53, before ads.
Which print method is best for custom t-shirts?
For single personalized shirts on cotton, DTG is the usual choice because it needs no setup. DTF works on any fabric and color, including polyester. Screen printing is cheapest per shirt at volume but has minimums, such as 6 shirts at Vistaprint and 500 at Printful.
Which t-shirt is best for print on demand?
The Bella+Canvas 3001 is the popular soft, retail-fit choice, though Printful notes its 4.2 oz fabric is slightly sheer. The Gildan 5000 is heavier and cheaper, from $7.50 at Printful. Order samples of both and wash them before you decide.
How do I sell personalized t-shirts with names on Shopify?
Keep size and color as variants, and add the name as a personalization field that saves to the order as a line item property. Add a character limit, a live preview and an add-on fee if the name needs a second print area. With PIMW Product Personalizer, text fields, preview and add-on fees work on every plan, including Free.
Can I sell custom t-shirts on Shopify from India?
Yes. Indian print partners such as Printrove, Qikink and Blinkstore connect to Shopify and print locally; Printrove and Qikink also support cash on delivery. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so you use a third-party payment provider, and t-shirts priced up to Rs 2,500 carry 5% GST.
