Yes, you can sell print on demand gift sets on Shopify: a mug with matching coasters, a tee with a tote, a self-care set with a candle, a mug and socks. What you mostly can't do is have the set arrive in one gift box. The big POD providers print different products at different facilities, so a "set" usually lands as two or three separate parcels.
That one fact shapes everything else: which items you group, how you describe the set, how you price shipping and how personalization flows to each piece. Get it right and a set raises your order value with no extra ad spend. Get it wrong and you get "half my gift is missing" emails in December.
This guide covers the set ideas that work, what Printful, Printify and Gelato actually do with multi-item orders, how to set up a bundle in Shopify, how to price a set with a worked example, and how to personalize across the pieces.
Provider policies and prices change. Everything below reflects provider pages we read in October 2026, so check your own dashboard before you publish.
Key takeaways
- Printful, Printify and Gelato ship items from different facilities or providers in separate parcels, and Printful does not offer gift boxes.
- Build each set from one print provider so you pay one shipping charge; a mixed-provider set can cost about $4 more per order.
- Shopify Bundles is free on every plan, but for personalized sets, separate products with a set discount keep each item's personalization intact.
- Price sets 10% to 15% under the separate total and charge any personalization fee once per set.
Gift set ideas that sell
A good POD gift set has three traits: the items belong together, the recipient is obvious, and the pieces can share one design or one name.
| Set | Items | Who buys it | Personalization angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee set | 11 oz mug plus 2 or 4 coasters | Housewarming, parents, coworkers | Family name or monogram on every piece |
| Tee and tote | T-shirt plus cotton tote | Teachers, bridesmaids, event merch | Name or role on both |
| Self-care set | Soy candle, mug, socks | Friends, moms, thank-you gifts | Name on the candle label and mug |
| Couples set | Two mugs or two sweatshirts | Anniversaries, first Christmas | Two names, one shared date |
| Pet owner set | Pet bandana plus owner mug | Dog and cat owners | Pet name and photo on both |
| Ornament set | 3 or 5 ornaments | Families, new parents | One name or year per ornament |
The ornament set is the easy one. Printify lists ceramic ornaments in 1, 3, 5 and 10 piece options, so a set can be a single product from a single provider. The same goes for some coaster sets. Those ship as one item because they are one item.
Sets that mix product types, like a mug and a tee, are where fulfillment gets complicated. That's the next section.
Do POD providers ship sets together?
Short answer: only when every item prints at the same place. Here's what each of the three main Shopify POD providers says about multi-item orders.
| Provider | Multi-item orders | Gift box or custom box | Inserts and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printful | Items printed at different facilities ship in separate packages | No. Poly, bubble and paper mailers only; custom branded mailers at some facilities, not for drinkware | Free packing slip message; pack-ins at $0.50 each plus a $25 monthly storage fee |
| Printify | Tries to group Printify Choice items at one location; items from different print providers ship separately, each with its own shipping fee | No standard gift box | Depends on the print provider |
| Gelato | Splits orders across production sites when that's faster; each shipment has its own tracking and shipping cost | No standard gift box | One packaging insert per shipment; gift notes through a printed insert |
Printful
Printful's custom packaging page is clear that it can't fulfill orders in custom boxes or gift boxes. It supports poly, bubble and paper mailers. You can send your own branded mailers to its Charlotte, Dallas, Toronto, Riga, Birmingham and Tijuana facilities, at a $0.50 picking fee per mailer plus storage with a $25 monthly minimum. Custom packaging isn't available for drinkware, wall art, structured hats or stationery.
Printful's help center also notes that items from different fulfillment centers arrive in separate packages. In practice, a tee and a mug often split. Printful sells a paper gift bag from $5.38 and wrapping paper, but those ship as products, not as packaging around your other items.
Printify
Printify is a network of print providers. If your mug comes from one provider and your coasters from another, they ship separately and Printify charges full shipping on each. For Printify Choice items, Printify's system tries to group everything at one location, but orders can still split when a variant is out of stock or not part of Choice.
The fix is simple: build each set from one print provider wherever you can. Check that the provider offers every item in the set before you design it.
Gelato
Gelato routes each product to the production site nearest the customer. When the items in an order are best made at different sites, Gelato splits it into numbered shipments, each with its own tracking number and shipping charge. If you use a packaging insert, each shipment gets one.
What this means for your listing
Tell the customer the truth on the product page: "Items in this set may arrive in separate packages." It costs you nothing and prevents most of the support emails. If a boxed presentation matters to your brand, POD probably isn't the right model for that product. Our custom gift box designer guide covers stores that pack boxes themselves.
How to set up a gift set on Shopify
You have three workable options. Pick based on whether the set needs personalization and how your provider handles bundles.
Option 1: Shopify Bundles (free)
Shopify Bundles is Shopify's own free app, available on every plan. It creates fixed bundles from existing products, with up to 30 components, 3 options and 100 variants per bundle. You set the bundle price yourself.
What to know before you use it with POD:
- Orders list the individual component SKUs, not the bundle SKU. That's what you want, because your POD app sees the real products.
- The bundle price doesn't update when a component price changes, so recheck it after any price change.
- Bundles need the Online Store channel or a headless storefront and an upgraded checkout.
- Bundles don't work with purchase options like subscriptions or pre-orders, and Shopify says custom products can't be bundled.
Run a test order before you launch to confirm your provider receives every component line and routes it correctly.
Option 2: A third-party bundle app
Apps like Simple Bundles & Kits map a bundle "parent" product to the individual POD products behind it. When the order comes in, Shopify shows each child item as its own line item, so Printful, Printify or Gelato can fulfill them. Simple Bundles also offers bundles where the customer picks sizes or colors per item, which helps for tee and hoodie sets. It's a paid app, so check its current plans.
Option 3: Sell the pieces separately with a set discount
This is the option we recommend most often for personalized sets. Each item stays its own product with its own personalization, and a Shopify automatic discount rewards buying the full set, for example 15% off when a mug and coasters from the same collection are in the cart.
Why it works well for POD:
- Every item carries its own personalization data straight to the provider.
- Nothing has to be split or mapped after checkout.
- Customers can swap a piece without breaking the bundle.
The trade-off is presentation. You need a set landing page or a "complete the set" block on each product page so shoppers see the full set. Our guide to Shopify bundle pricing with options and our post on option combination discounts cover the discount setup.
Pricing a gift set: a worked example
A set should feel like a deal to the shopper and still beat the margin of selling one item. Here's a tee and tote set, both from the same Printify print provider so they can ship together.
Assumptions, which you should replace with your own numbers:
- Bella+Canvas 3001 tee base cost: $10.98 (Printify's listed example, October 2026).
- Cotton tote base cost: $5.94 (Printify's lowest tote price, October 2026).
- Shipping: assume $7.50 for the tee alone, $6.50 for the tote alone and $10.00 for both together from one provider. Check your provider's real first-item and additional-item rates.
- Payment processing: assume about 3% of the sale price.
| Line | Tee alone | Tote alone | Tee and tote set |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail price | $28.00 | $22.00 | $44.00 (12% under $50) |
| Base cost | $10.98 | $5.94 | $16.92 |
| Shipping cost | $7.50 | $6.50 | $10.00 |
| Payment processing (3%) | $0.84 | $0.66 | $1.32 |
| Profit per order | $8.68 | $8.90 | $15.76 |
| Margin | 31% | 40% | 36% |
The set earns $15.76 per order versus $8.68 for the tee alone. The shopper saves $6 against buying both separately, and you pay for one shipment instead of two. That saving on shipping is what pays for the discount.
Now look at what happens when the items come from two providers. If the tote shipped from a different provider, you'd pay shipping on both parcels, say $7.50 plus $6.50, which is $14.00 instead of $10.00. Profit drops to $11.76 and the margin falls from 36% to 27%. Same set, same price, $4 less per order, just because of where the pieces were printed.
Three pricing rules we use:
- Discount the set by 10% to 15%, not 30%. POD base costs are higher than wholesale, so deep discounts eat the margin.
- Build the set from one provider so you pay one shipping charge.
- If you charge a personalization fee, charge it once for the set, not per item. One "add names to the whole set" fee feels fair; three separate fees feel like a trap.

Personalizing across the set
Personalization is what turns a generic bundle into a gift. A mug and coasters is a commodity. A mug and coasters with "The Garcias, est. 2019" on every piece is a housewarming present.
There are two ways to set it up.
One name, every piece
The customer types the name once and it appears on every item. This is the cleanest experience, but it only works if one product carries the personalization fields. If you sell the set as separate products, ask for the name on each product page, or pre-fill it with a note like "Use the same name on your coasters for a matching set."
Different details per piece
Couples sets and family sets need a different name on each item: "Alex" on one mug, "Sam" on the other. Give each piece its own clearly labeled field ("Name for mug 1," "Name for mug 2") and show them in preview side by side so the customer can check spelling before paying.
Make sure the data reaches the provider
This is where bundles often break. Personalization is usually saved as line-item properties on the product the customer personalized. If a bundle app replaces that line with component lines after checkout, the properties may not come along. Before launch, place a test order and check that every name and photo shows on the correct item in your Printful, Printify or Gelato dashboard.
That's one reason we favor Option 3 for personalized sets. With PIMW Product Personalizer, each product page gets its own live preview, fonts and character limits, and the personalization is saved on that item's line in the order, so whichever provider prints it can read it. If you're new to this, our explainer on what a product personalizer is walks through how the data flows.
Gift set launch checklist
- Choose sets where every item is available from one print provider.
- Order a sample of the full set and check that colors match across products. A navy tee and a navy tote from different blanks rarely look identical.
- Decide how you'll set it up: Shopify Bundles, a bundle app, or separate products with a set discount.
- Price the set 10% to 15% under the separate total, using real shipping rates.
- Add personalization fields, with live preview and character limits on every piece.
- Add "items may arrive in separate packages" to the product page.
- Place a test order and confirm each item, with its personalization, reaches your provider correctly.
- Offer a gift note or gift wrap add-on only if your provider can really deliver it.

Frequently asked questions
Can you sell gift sets with print on demand?
Yes. You can bundle items like a mug and coasters or a tee and tote on Shopify using Shopify Bundles, a bundle app or separate products with a set discount. The main limit is packaging: items printed at different facilities usually ship separately, and the big providers don't offer gift boxes.
Does Printful ship bundled items in one box?
Only when the items are printed at the same facility. Printful notes that products from different fulfillment centers arrive in separate packages, and its custom packaging page says it can't fulfill orders in custom boxes or gift boxes. It uses poly, bubble and paper mailers.
Why does Printify charge shipping twice on one order?
When items in an order come from different print providers, they ship in separate packages and each gets its own shipping fee. Printify tries to group Printify Choice items at one location. To avoid double shipping, build each set from products a single print provider offers.
Does Shopify Bundles work with print on demand?
It can. Shopify Bundles is free on every plan and lists each component SKU on the order, so your POD app sees the individual products. Bundle prices don't update automatically when component prices change, and you should place a test order to confirm your provider receives every item.
How should I price a POD gift set?
Add up the real base costs and the shipping for the set, then price it 10% to 15% below what the items cost separately. The saving usually comes from paying one shipping charge instead of two. Deep discounts of 30% or more tend to wipe out POD margins.
Can customers personalize each item in a gift set?
Yes. Either ask for one name that goes on every piece, or give each item its own labeled field, like a name for each mug in a couples set. Test an order to make sure each item's personalization reaches your provider, since some bundle setups drop line-item properties.
What are good print on demand gift set ideas?
Popular sets include a mug with coasters, a tee with a tote, a self-care set with a candle, mug and socks, couples mug sets, pet bandana plus owner mug, and multi-piece ornament sets. Sets work best when the recipient is obvious and every piece can share a name or design.
