To sell personalized cutting boards online, choose how the boards get made (an engraving print-on-demand partner like Printify or teelaunch, or your own laser engraver), set up a Shopify store with size and wood as variants, add a personalizer so customers can type the names and date and see the engraving on the board before they buy, price for gifting (engraved boards retail for $70 and up at gift retailers), and market them for weddings, housewarmings and closing gifts. You can start without a laser, without stock and without code.
An engraved cutting board is one of the most popular personalized gifts: it's useful, it lasts, and a family name or wedding date turns a kitchen tool into a keepsake. This guide covers how to make them, what they cost, how to price and ship them, the food-safety basics, and how to set up engraving personalization with PIMW Product Personalizer, our Shopify app. Prices and rules come from Printify, teelaunch, Printful, Things Remembered, Glowforge, USDA, the FDA and USPS, checked in October 2026.
Key takeaways
- No laser needed to start: Printify (JDS Industries) engraves walnut or maple boards from $25.04 and teelaunch engraves maple boards from $15.75.
- Gift retailers set the price ceiling: Things Remembered sells engraved hardwood boards for $70 to $110, so a $59.99 board can leave about $23 after costs.
- PIMW Product Personalizer adds engraving text with character limits, tested fonts, wood swatches, logo upload and a live preview, with no per-order fees.
- Food safety: USDA accepts wood boards; engrave the back or sell the engraved side for serving, and include oil and hand-wash care instructions.
Why personalized cutting boards sell
- They're a go-to gift. Weddings, housewarmings, anniversaries, Mother's and Father's Day and Christmas all bring buyers looking for something personal that people will use.
- Shoppers pay well for engraving. Things Remembered sells an engraved hardwood board for $70 (12 x 17 in), $85 (15 x 21 in) and $110 (18 x 24 in), with personalization included in the price.
- A steady business market. Real estate agents give engraved boards as closing gifts, and the US saw 4.06 million existing-home sales in 2025, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR).
- The personal detail is the product. A family name, "Est. 2026" or a grandmother's recipe can't be bought off the shelf, so you compete on design, not price.
Popular personalized cutting board ideas

- Family name boards: last name, initial and "Est." year, the classic housewarming and wedding gift.
- Wedding boards: the couple's names and wedding date.
- Realtor closing gifts: the buyer's family name plus the agent's logo on the back or corner.
- Recipe boards: a family recipe engraved in a handwritten-style font.
- Monogram boards: three-letter initials in a frame.
- Map or city boards: a hometown, a state outline or coordinates.
- Charcuterie and serving boards: larger boards for hosting gifts.
- Photo boards on glass: a sublimated photo on a tempered glass board, a different look from wood.
How personalized cutting boards are made

| Method | How it works | Upfront cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engraving print on demand | Printify (JDS Industries) or teelaunch engrave and ship each order | None (samples only) | Starting out, testing designs |
| Glass board print on demand | Printful, Printify or Gooten sublimate a photo onto tempered glass | None | Photo and colorful designs |
| Your own diode laser | Engrave blank boards yourself | Glowforge Spark listed at $899 | Small batches, hands-on makers |
| Your own CO2 laser | Faster, more powerful engraving | Glowforge Plus HD $6,999, Pro HD $7,999 | Steady volume, business orders |
Engraved wood boards on print on demand (October 2026):
- Printify, Wooden Cutting Board (Engraving) by JDS Industries: from $25.04 to $47.25 depending on size and option (lower with Printify Premium). Printify says "Premium walnut or maple wood", hand wash only, blanks sourced from the USA, in paddle (13.5 x 7 in) and rectangle (9 x 6 in) shapes, with or without a drip ring. Printify also lists an engraved acacia Charcuterie Board from $29.07.
- teelaunch Maple Cutting Board: "Hand-crafted from solid maple and laser engraved", made in the USA, $15.75 to $28.50 in three sizes. Its Hardwood Paddle Cutting Board comes in maple or walnut from $11.25 to $20.50. teelaunch lists shipping from $5.00 to $6.00 for the first item.
- Printful: only a Glass Cutting Board ($15.23 for 8 x 11 in, $21.26 for 11 x 15 in, with US shipping $10.89 for the first board). Printful notes the glass "may dull knives over time", so it suits serving and display.

If you engrave yourself: a diode laser like the Glowforge Spark (6-watt, engraves material up to 3/4 inch thick) is enough to start. CO2 lasers like the Glowforge Plus HD and Pro HD are faster and suit higher volume. Our guide to starting a laser engraving business on Shopify covers machines and materials.
Wood, engraving and food safety
- Wood or plastic are both fine. The USDA says "consumers may choose either wood or a nonporous surface" for cutting boards, and that nonporous surfaces are easier to clean than wood.
- Bamboo is a good value option. USDA notes bamboo boards are "harder and less porous than hardwoods" and recommends rubbing them with mineral oil.
- Engrave the back, or sell it as a serving board. xTool's guidance is to engrave the side you won't cut on, and it doesn't recommend cutting on an engraved surface even when sealed. Or sell engraved boards as serving and display boards.
- Care instructions sell. Tell buyers to hand wash, dry the board standing up and oil it now and then. Food-grade mineral oil is allowed for food-contact articles under FDA rule 21 CFR 178.3620.
- Replace worn boards. USDA advises discarding boards that become "excessively worn or develop hard-to-clean grooves", a good reason for repeat customers.
- California. Wood dust is on California's Proposition 65 list, mainly as a risk when cutting and sanding wood. If you make boards yourself and sell into California, check with your supplier or an advisor whether a warning applies to your products.
Set up your Shopify cutting board store
- Open a store on Shopify Basic (from $29 a month, billed yearly) with a clean, warm theme.
- Connect your engraving partner (Printify or teelaunch), or create products yourself if you engrave in-house.
- Use variants for size, shape and wood, so each combination has its own price and photo.
- Add personalization with PIMW Product Personalizer (next section).
- Write a clear product page: exact size in inches, wood type, which side is engraved, care instructions and delivery time.
- Set a personalized-item policy: no returns for change of mind, but a fast remake for any defect or spelling error you made.

How to sell engraved boards with PIMW Product Personalizer

Customers buying an engraved board are almost always buying a gift. They worry about spelling, and they want to see the names on the board before they pay. That's the job of PIMW Product Personalizer, our Shopify app: it adds the engraving fields to your product page, shows a live preview on your board photo, and sends you every detail with the order.
What it does for cutting boards:
- Engraving text fields for the family name, couple's names, date or a short quote, each with a character limit so the text always fits the engraving area.
- Fonts you choose: 35+ Google Fonts, from scripts to clean serif fonts. Offer only the three or four you've test-engraved, as our guide to the best fonts for engraving explains.
- Live preview: the engraving appears on the board photo as the shopper types.
- Wood image swatches: show maple, walnut or bamboo as photos instead of a plain dropdown.
- Logo upload for realtor and business boards: customers upload PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG or GIF up to 5 MB (Pro and Unlimited plans). SVG logos give the cleanest engraving.
- Front and back steps: a family name on the front and a realtor's logo or message on the back.
- Paid add-ons: charge for a second line, back-side engraving, a monogram or gift wrap, added to the cart through Shopify's Cart Transform.
- Conditional logic: show a "wedding date" field only when the shopper picks the wedding design (Pro and Unlimited).
- Orders tab: see the text, font, wood choice and uploaded logo for every order, ready for your engraver.
How to set it up (no code):
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer from the Shopify App Store and turn on the app embed in your theme.
- Create a personalizer on a straight-on photo of your blank board.
- Place text areas exactly where the laser will engrave, with a character limit per area (shorter on small boards).
- Pick your fonts and a preview text color that matches how the engraving really looks on each wood.
- Add options: wood swatches, a gift box checkbox, a back-side engraving checkbox with a price.
- Assign it to your board products and add the Personalizer block to your product page, then place a test order.
There's a free plan (one template on up to 2 products), paid plans from $7.99 a month, and no per-order fees. Our ranking of the best Shopify product personalizer apps compares PIMW Product Personalizer with nine other apps, and our engraving personalizer comparison covers apps built for engraved products.

How to price personalized cutting boards

Start with what gift retailers charge, then check your costs. Things Remembered sells engraved hardwood boards for $70 to $110, and Personalization Mall lists a large engraved board with handles at $209.99.
Here's a worked example with a teelaunch maple board at the top of its price range:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Engraved maple board (teelaunch, top of range) | $28.50 |
| Shipping, first item (teelaunch, up to) | $6.00 |
| Your total cost | $34.50 |
| Your price, free shipping | $59.99 |
| Shopify Payments fee (2.9% + 30¢, Basic plan) | $2.04 |
| What's left before ads and app costs | $23.45 |
Pricing tips:
- Price each wood on its own cost. If walnut costs you more than maple or bamboo, make it a higher-priced variant.
- Price add-ons: a second engraving line, back-side engraving and gift wrap all add value for gift buyers.
- Offer bulk pricing for realtors and companies ordering 10 or more boards.
- Bundle: a board with a matching set of coasters or a utensil set raises the order value.
Our guide to per-character vs per-word pricing for engraving covers other ways to charge for text.
Shipping cutting boards
If you use print on demand, the partner ships for you. If you ship yourself, a board weighs a few pounds, so it goes as a parcel. USPS Ground Advantage retail prices from October 4, 2026:
| Weight | Zone 1 | Zone 4 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 lb | $11.30 | $13.50 | $19.80 |
| 3 lb | $11.80 | $14.20 | $23.15 |
Wrap the engraved side in paper, protect corners, and use a snug box so the board doesn't slide around. Glass boards need extra padding.
How to market personalized cutting boards
- Wedding season and registries: target guests looking for a personal wedding gift and couples' family members.
- Housewarmings and realtors: pitch local real estate agents a closing-gift program with their logo on the back.
- Holidays: Mother's Day, Father's Day and Christmas. Our Christmas marketing ideas for personalized gifts covers the biggest season.
- Show the engraving close up: real photos of the engraving on each wood, plus a lifestyle photo on a kitchen counter.
- Collect photos and reviews from your first customers.

Mistakes to avoid
- Offering fonts you haven't test-engraved. Hairline scripts can blur or burn unevenly.
- One character limit for every size. A small paddle holds far less text than a charcuterie board.
- Hiding the wood choice in a plain dropdown. Image swatches sell premium woods better.
- A preview area that doesn't match the real engraving area.
- Telling buyers to cut on the engraved side.
- No care instructions in the box.
Your cutting board launch checklist
- Pick your main buyer: wedding gifts, housewarmings or realtors.
- Choose print on demand or your own laser, and order samples in each wood.
- Open your Shopify store with size, shape and wood variants.
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer: text fields with limits, three or four tested fonts, wood swatches and a live preview.
- Add paid extras: back-side engraving, second line and gift wrap.
- Price against gift retailers, and check your margin after shipping and fees.
- Write care instructions and say which side is engraved.
- Pitch three local real estate agents and plan your wedding and holiday campaigns.
Personalized cutting boards are a gift people keep for years. Give buyers a clear preview of their names on the wood, make the engraving look great, and price for gifting, and they can become one of the best sellers in your store.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sell personalized cutting boards without a laser engraver?
Yes. Printify offers an engraved walnut or maple Wooden Cutting Board by JDS Industries from $25.04, and teelaunch engraves solid maple boards from $15.75. They engrave and ship each order, so you need no machine or stock.
How much should I charge for a personalized cutting board?
Look at gift retailers: Things Remembered sells engraved hardwood boards for $70 to $110 with personalization included. A board costing $34.50 with shipping and sold at $59.99 leaves about $23.45 after Shopify Payments fees, before ads.
Are engraved cutting boards food safe?
USDA says consumers may choose wood or nonporous cutting boards. xTool recommends engraving the side you won't cut on and doesn't recommend cutting on an engraved surface, so many sellers engrave the back or sell the engraved side for serving.
How do customers add names to a cutting board on Shopify?
Use a personalizer app. PIMW Product Personalizer adds text fields with character limits, a font picker, wood swatches and a live preview of the engraving, and saves the text and font with each order. There's a free plan and no per-order fees.
Which laser do I need to engrave cutting boards?
A diode laser such as the Glowforge Spark (listed at $899) engraves wood up to 3/4 inch thick and suits small batches. CO2 lasers like the Glowforge Plus HD ($6,999) and Pro HD ($7,999) are faster for steady volume.
How much does it cost to ship a cutting board?
Boards ship as parcels. USPS Ground Advantage retail costs $11.30 to $19.80 for 2 lb and $11.80 to $23.15 for 3 lb depending on zone (prices from October 4, 2026).
