To sell custom magnets online, open a Shopify store, connect a print-on-demand partner that prints magnets (Printful makes die-cut fridge magnets from $3.39), add a personalizer so customers can upload their own photo or type a name and see the magnet before they buy, sell sets instead of single magnets so shipping doesn't eat your profit, and market them around gifts, weddings and small businesses. You need no stock, no printer and no code to start.
Custom magnets are small, cheap to make and easy to ship, and they're one of the most personal gifts there is: a pet, a baby, a wedding date or a family photo on the fridge. This guide covers what to sell, what it costs, how to price and ship it, the safety rules, and how to set up photo and name personalization with PIMW Product Personalizer, our Shopify app. Prices come from Printful, Vistaprint, Shutterfly, Avery and USPS, checked in October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Start with print on demand: Printful die-cut magnets cost $3.39 (3 x 3 in) to $5.99 (6 x 6 in), with US shipping $4.69 plus $0.99 per extra magnet.
- Sell sets: a single magnet at $12.99 leaves about $4.23, while a 4-pack at $29.99 leaves about $7.60 after shipping and Shopify Payments fees.
- Personalization sells magnets: PIMW Product Personalizer adds photo upload, names, dates, add-ons and a live preview with no code and no per-order fees.
- Check the rules: ordinary fridge magnets aren't covered by the CPSC magnet rule, but small strong magnets and magnets for children are regulated.
Why custom magnets are a good product to sell
- Low cost, high margin per set. A 3 x 3 inch die-cut magnet costs $3.39 at Printful. Shoppers pay far more for a personal one: Shutterfly lists photo magnets from $6.99 each.
- People buy them in sets. Vistaprint sells fridge magnets in packs of 10 or more ($17.99 for 10), and families, couples and businesses rarely want just one.
- Steady demand from businesses. Magnets are a classic promotional product. US promotional product sales reached $27.1 billion in 2025, according to PPAI, the industry association.
- Easy to personalize. A photo, a name, a date or a logo is all it takes, so one product listing can serve thousands of customers.
8 custom magnet ideas that sell

- Pet photo magnets: the pet's photo and name. Printify says pets are one of the most popular magnet themes.
- Family photo sets: a 4-pack or 6-pack of family photos, a grandparents' gift that sells all year.
- Save-the-date magnets: the couple's photo, names and wedding date. Vistaprint sells them from $19.19 for 10.
- Baby announcements and birthdays: name, birth date, weight and photo.
- Business card magnets: logo, phone and website for real estate agents, plumbers, cleaners and other local services. Vistaprint sells magnetic business cards from $17.99 for 25.
- Calendar magnets: a yearly calendar with a business's or a family's photo.
- Kids' art magnets: parents upload a child's drawing and get it on the fridge for good.
- Travel and event souvenirs: a city name, a team, a school or a reunion, personalized with a name or date.
Pick two or three ideas for one audience (for example pet owners or couples) rather than all eight at once.
Ways to make custom magnets
| Method | How it works | Upfront cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print on demand | Printful or Printify print and ship each order | None (samples only) | Starting out, photo magnets, one-offs |
| Inkjet magnet sheets | Print at home and cut by hand | About $20 for 5 sheets | Testing ideas, small local orders |
| Button magnets | A button press makes round magnets | A press plus parts | Events, schools, fan merch |
| Laser-cut wood or acrylic | Cut and engrave shapes yourself | A laser cutter (Glowforge Spark listed at $899) | Premium, engraved magnets |
| Bulk printers | Vistaprint or Sticker Mule print large runs | Per order (minimums apply) | Business orders of 50+ |
Print-on-demand options (October 2026):
- Printful Die-Cut Magnets: 3 x 3 in $3.39, 4 x 4 in $3.91, 6 x 6 in $5.99. Printful describes them as "0.5 mm flexible vinyl" with a "premium matte finish" and a black magnetic backing. US shipping is $4.69 for the first magnet and $0.99 for each extra one.
- Printful Car Magnets: from $3.12 (7.5 x 4.5 in), described as weather-resistant.
- Printify: its catalog includes "car magnets, die-cut magnets, porcelain magnets, square magnets, and even a magnetic bottle opener" from several print providers. Prices vary by provider.
In-house options: Avery's printable inkjet magnet sheets (8.5 x 11 in, 5 sheets) list at $19.50, and one sheet fits six 3 x 3 inch magnets, so a pack makes about 30. They're thin, so use them to test designs. Sticker Mule's custom magnets are 30 mil thick (about 0.76 mm), and Vistaprint prints fridge magnets on 0.5 mm material. Thicker magnets hold better and feel more premium.

What makes a good custom magnet
- Enough photo resolution. A 3 x 3 inch magnet printed at 300 pixels per inch needs about 900 x 900 pixels, and a 2 x 3 inch magnet about 600 x 900. Most phone photos are far bigger, but screenshots and old photos may not be.
- Thick enough to hold. Thin magnets slide down when the fridge door closes. If you sell a large size, pick 0.5 mm or thicker.
- Matte or gloss finish that suits photos, and rounded corners or a die-cut shape.
- A note about stainless steel. Printify warns that "magnets may not stick to stainless-steel refrigerators because the metal is often mixed with nickel." Say so on your product page to avoid returns.
Set up your Shopify magnet store
- Open a store on the Basic plan (from $29 a month, billed yearly) and pick a clean theme.
- Connect Printful or Printify and create your magnet products in each size you want to sell.
- Use variants for size and pack size (single, 4-pack, 6-pack), so each has its own price.
- Add personalization with PIMW Product Personalizer (next section).
- Write a clear product page: the size in inches, thickness, finish, how many magnets come in a pack, delivery times, and the stainless-steel note.
- Add policies: personalized magnets usually can't be returned for change of mind, but reprint any defect quickly.

How to personalize magnets with PIMW Product Personalizer

PIMW Product Personalizer is our Shopify app for personalized products, and magnets are one of the simplest products to set it up for. Your customers upload a photo or type their text, see the finished magnet in a live preview, and order. You get the photo and text with the order.
What you can do for magnets:
- Photo upload: customers upload PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG or GIF files up to 5 MB into a photo area you place on the magnet. Photo upload is on the Pro and Unlimited plans.
- Text with fonts: names, dates and short messages with 35+ Google Fonts, colors and a character limit so text always fits.
- Live preview: the shopper sees their photo and text on the magnet as they build it.
- Several photos in one product: set up a 4-pack with a photo area for each magnet.
- Options and add-ons: let shoppers choose a frame style, a background or a gift box with checkboxes, dropdowns, radio buttons or image swatches (10 field types in total), and charge for extras like a gift box or a second design.
- Conditional logic: show a "wedding date" field only when the shopper picks the save-the-date design (Pro and Unlimited).
- Orders tab: see and download every uploaded photo and text for each order, ready to send to your printer.
How to set it up (no code):
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer from the Shopify App Store.
- Turn on the app embed in your theme.
- Create a personalizer on a photo of your blank magnet.
- Add a photo upload area and text areas where the design goes.
- Add options such as frame or gift box, with prices if you want to charge for them.
- Assign the personalizer to your magnet products and add the Personalizer block to your product page.
There's a free plan (one template on up to 2 products), paid plans from $7.99 a month, and no per-order fees, so a busy holiday season doesn't raise your app bill. Our guides to Shopify image upload and print on demand personalization show the photo flow step by step, and our ranking of the best Shopify product personalizer apps compares PIMW Product Personalizer with nine other apps.
PIMW Product Personalizer use cases for magnets
| Magnet | What the customer adds | PIMW features used |

| Pet photo magnet | Pet photo and name | Photo upload, text with fonts, live preview |
| Family photo 4-pack | Four photos | Several photo areas, pack-size variants |
| Save-the-date | Photo, names, wedding date | Photo upload, text, conditional fields per design |
| Business card magnet | Logo, phone, website | Logo upload, text fields, quantity variants |
| Baby announcement | Photo, name, date, weight | Photo upload, several text fields |
| Kids' art magnet | Scan or photo of a drawing | Photo upload, frame options as image swatches |
| Gift set | Photo plus a gift box | Checkbox add-on with a price |
How to price custom magnets

Printful's costs make one thing clear: sell sets. Here are two examples with Printful 3 x 3 inch die-cut magnets, US shipping included in the price:
| Line | Single magnet | 4-pack |
|---|---|---|
| Magnet cost | $3.39 | $13.56 |
| US shipping | $4.69 | $7.66 ($4.69 + 3 x $0.99) |
| Your total cost | $8.08 | $21.22 |
| Your price, free shipping | $12.99 | $29.99 |
| Shopify Payments fee (2.9% + 30¢, Basic plan) | $0.68 | $1.17 |
| What's left before ads and app costs | $4.23 | $7.60 |
Shipping is most of the cost of a single magnet, so a 4-pack earns almost twice as much per order. Pricing tips:
- Make the multipack the default and show the price per magnet.
- Charge for extras such as a gift box or a premium size.
- Offer business quantities (25, 50, 100) to real estate agents and local businesses.
- Check benchmarks: Shutterfly from $6.99 per photo magnet, Vistaprint $17.99 for 10 fridge magnets.
Shipping custom magnets

If you print on demand, your partner ships for you. If you make magnets yourself:
- Flat envelopes are cheapest. A First-Class Mail large envelope costs $1.69 for 1 oz at USPS retail prices (from October 4, 2026). USPS rules say flats must be flexible and evenly thick, so this suits flexible magnets.
- Rigid magnets pay parcel prices. Wood, acrylic and button magnets don't qualify as flats. USPS Ground Advantage starts at $8.40 retail for 4 oz.
- Protect them: use a stiff card and a sleeve so photos don't scratch.
Safety rules to know
- Small, strong magnets are regulated. The US CPSC's magnet rule (16 CFR part 1262, in force since October 21, 2022) covers products meant for entertainment, jewelry, mental stimulation or stress relief that contain loose or separable magnets that fit in a small-parts cylinder and have a flux index of 50 or more.
- Ordinary fridge magnets made from flexible magnet sheet aren't among those products. Still, avoid small, strong loose magnets.
- Magnets for children are toys or children's products and must meet toy safety rules (ASTM F963) with the right certificate. If you aren't ready for that, market your magnets to adults.
This isn't legal advice. Check with your supplier before selling magnet products for kids.
How to market your magnet store

- Use email. Our email marketing guide for print on demand shows the flows that bring buyers back.

Mistakes to avoid
- Selling single magnets only, so shipping eats the profit.
- Accepting low-resolution photos without warning the customer.
- Thin magnets for large sizes.
- No size in inches on the product page.
- Using characters, team logos or celebrity photos you don't have rights to.
- Marketing strong small magnets to children.
Your custom magnet launch checklist
- Pick one audience and two or three magnet ideas.
- Order samples from your print-on-demand partner.
- Open your Shopify store and create products with size and pack variants.
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer and add photo upload, text and a live preview.
- Price sets so each order makes money after shipping and fees.
- Add the size, thickness, finish and stainless-steel note to every product page.
- Take lifestyle photos of real magnets.
- Launch before the next gift season and pitch two or three local businesses.
Custom magnets are one of the easiest personalized products to start with: cheap to make, quick to ship and loved as gifts. Let customers add their own photo, sell them in sets, and they can become a steady part of your store.
Frequently asked questions
Is selling custom magnets profitable?
It can be, especially in sets. With Printful 3 x 3 inch magnets ($3.39 each, $4.69 US shipping plus $0.99 per extra), a 4-pack sold at $29.99 with free shipping leaves about $7.60 after Shopify Payments fees, versus about $4.23 for a single magnet at $12.99.
Can I sell custom magnets with print on demand?
Yes. Printful offers die-cut magnets in 3, 4 and 6 inch sizes and car magnets, and Printify's catalog includes die-cut, square, porcelain and car magnets from several print providers. They print and ship each order for you.
How do customers upload a photo for a custom magnet on Shopify?
Use a personalizer app. PIMW Product Personalizer adds a photo upload area (PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG or GIF up to 5 MB) on the Pro and Unlimited plans, plus text, fonts and a live preview, and saves the files with each order.
What size should a photo be for a 3 x 3 inch magnet?
About 900 x 900 pixels for printing at 300 pixels per inch. A 2 x 3 inch magnet needs about 600 x 900 pixels. Most phone photos are bigger than that.
How much does it cost to ship a magnet?
A flexible magnet in a large envelope can go First-Class Mail as a flat from $1.69 for 1 oz (USPS retail, October 2026). Rigid wood, acrylic or button magnets pay parcel prices, with Ground Advantage from $8.40 retail.
Are there safety rules for selling magnets?
Yes. The CPSC magnet rule (16 CFR 1262) covers products for entertainment, jewelry or stress relief with small, strong loose magnets. Ordinary flexible fridge magnets aren't among them, but magnets sold to children must meet toy safety rules (ASTM F963).
