To sell personalized jewellery online, you need five things working together: a short list of pieces people buy as gifts, a reliable way to make them, a sales channel whose fees you've priced in, a product page that captures the engraving text correctly, and metal claims that match the law where your buyers live.
Most new sellers get the first one right and stumble on the rest. They pick a lovely name necklace, then lose money on remakes because a customer typed "Isabella-Rose" into a field that only fits eight characters.
This guide covers the whole business for makers and small brands in the US, UK and India, so you'll see "jewellery" and "jewelry" used for the same thing.
If you only need the Shopify setup steps, read our guide on how to start a custom jewelry store on Shopify first. This post sits above that: what to sell, how to make it, where to sell it, what to charge and how to stay out of trouble.
Key takeaways
- Start with four to six gift-led pieces, each with a clear text field and a character limit you've tested on real metal.
- On an illustrative $58 engraved bar necklace, Etsy fees take about $5.96 versus about $2.04 in card fees on your own store, before ads and plan costs.
- Metal words are regulated: in the US 'gold' alone means 24K and vermeil has a set definition; in the UK gold from 1 g and silver from 7.78 g must be hallmarked to be sold as gold or silver.
- UK buyers can't cancel clearly personalised goods under the 14-day rule, but a misspelled engraving you caused is still your remake.
Choose what to sell first

Start with four to six products, not forty. Personalized jewellery sells as a gift for a person or a moment, so pick pieces with a clear occasion and a clear piece of text.
These types keep showing up in personalized gift shops:
- Name and initial necklaces. One word or one letter, usually in a script font.
- Engraved bar necklaces and bracelets. Front: "Ava 06.14.26", max 12 characters. Back: "Always", max 10.
- Birthstone pieces. A stone per child or per month, often with initials.
- Coordinates jewellery. Latitude and longitude of a wedding venue or first home.
- Mom and family necklaces. Several discs or charms, each with a child's name.
- Men's pieces. Cufflinks, ID bracelets, dog tags and signet rings.
Browse our jewelry personalizer hub to see how each type and material is usually set up.
When you're deciding between types, look at the text first. Name necklaces in cut-out script need a font that holds together when cut from thin metal, which limits your font list. Engraved bars are more forgiving because the text sits on a solid plate.
Coordinates and family pieces mean more fields per order and more ways to get it wrong. Our walkthrough of a custom coordinates necklace maker shows how to format those inputs so the bench receives clean data.
A family necklace with three discs is three chances for a typo. The custom mom necklace with children's names guide handles a variable number of names without dozens of variants.
Birthstone jewellery adds twelve stone choices, sometimes per charm. The custom birthstone jewelry store setup is a good model if that's your lead product.
Men's jewellery fills a gap in Father's Day and groomsmen gifting. Our page on men's personalized jewelry lists the pieces and fields that tend to work.
Pick a production model
How you make the piece decides your margin, your turnaround and your control over quality. There are four common models, and many shops mix two.
Make it yourself
You buy blanks (bars, discs, tags) and personalize them with hand stamping, a rotary engraver or a fibre laser. Stamping is the cheapest start but slower and less consistent. A fibre laser costs more up front and gives clean, repeatable engraving on most metals.
Best margin per piece, fastest response to custom requests. It also means you are the factory in December.
Partner with a local jeweller or workshop
You design, sell and handle customers. A workshop casts, cuts or engraves to your spec. This is common in India, where karigar workshops can produce name pendants in gold or silver, and in the UK, where many workshops take trade orders.
Agree on turnaround, remake terms and who pays for errors before the first order. Put it in writing.
Print-on-demand jewellery
Print-on-demand platforms like Printful, Printify and Gelato are worth checking. Their catalogs change, and jewellery ranges, where they exist, tend to be printed or engraved pendants on plated base metals. Read the spec for metal, plating and engraving method before you list, because those details decide what you can legally claim.
Our guide to POD jewelry and necklaces covers how those products behave in a Shopify store. There are also jewellery-specific suppliers that engrave and ship under your brand. Order samples and wear them for a few weeks before you trust anyone with your name.
White-label and dropship
You buy finished personalized pieces from a manufacturer who ships to your customer. Least work, thinnest margin, and you never see the piece before the buyer does.
| Model | Upfront cost | Margin per piece | Turnaround control | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Make it yourself | Medium to high (tools, blanks) | Highest | Full | Makers with time and space |
| Local jeweller or workshop | Low to medium (samples, deposits) | Medium to high | Shared, set by agreement | Designers, real gold and silver |
| Print-on-demand | Low (samples only) | Low to medium | Set by provider | Testing designs, plated fashion pieces |
| White-label or dropship | Low | Lowest | Low | Adding a range fast |
Where to sell: channels compared
A common path is to start on a marketplace for traffic, then move repeat buyers and higher-priced pieces to your own store, where fees are lower and you own the customer list.
Here's what each channel costs at the time of writing (October 2026). Fees change, so confirm them before you price.
| Channel | Main fees (at the time of writing) | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy | $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee (including shipping), payment processing 3% + $0.25 in the US, 15% Offsite Ads fee on sales from those ads | Gift buyers already searching for personalized pieces | Fees stack up; personalization often arrives as a free-text note |
| Amazon Handmade | 15% referral fee or $0.30 per unit, whichever is greater; Professional plan $39.99 a month, waived after the first month for approved Handmade sellers | Large audience, gift-season demand | Application required; handmade rules exclude dropship and POD |
| Own Shopify store | Monthly Shopify plan (price depends on your country and billing term), plus card processing; an extra transaction fee applies if you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments | Lower fees per sale, your own customer list, structured personalization fields | You bring the traffic |
| Instagram and TikTok Shop | Platform fees vary by country and change often | Short videos of engraving sell the product | TikTok Shop isn't an option in India |
In India, many sellers also list on Amazon.in and Etsy alongside their own store. Check each platform's current fee card, since jewellery often has its own category rate.
If you're weighing Etsy against your own site, our comparison of Shopify vs Etsy for personalization looks at how each one captures custom text. Etsy leans on a free-text box, while a Shopify store can enforce limits per field.
For the money side, the breakdown of Etsy fees vs Shopify costs runs the numbers at different sales volumes.
How to price personalized jewellery
Price from cost upward, then check the result against similar pieces. Personalized pieces carry costs plain jewellery doesn't: engraving time, proofing, remakes and slower packing.
Add up materials, labour at an hourly rate you'd pay someone else, engraving consumables, packaging, shipping, channel fees and a few percent for remakes.
Here's a worked example for a sterling silver engraved bar necklace. The numbers are illustrative, not supplier quotes. Swap in your own.
| Line | Sold on Etsy (US) | Sold on own Shopify store |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price (free shipping) | $58.00 | $58.00 |
| Sterling silver bar blank | $9.00 | $9.00 |
| Sterling silver chain, 18 inch | $4.50 | $4.50 |
| Engraving labour (15 minutes at $24 an hour) | $6.00 | $6.00 |
| Engraving consumables and machine wear | $0.75 | $0.75 |
| Gift box, pouch and card | $2.80 | $2.80 |
| Mailer and padding | $0.70 | $0.70 |
| Postage | $5.00 | $5.00 |
| Listing fee | $0.20 | $0.00 |
| Transaction fee (6.5%) | $3.77 | $0.00 |
| Payment processing (Etsy 3% + $0.25; Shopify store assumed 3% + $0.30) | $1.99 | $2.04 |
| Profit before ads, app and plan costs | $23.29 | $27.21 |
That $3.92 gap per order is the fee difference, before Etsy Offsite Ads on one side or your Shopify plan and ad spend on the other. At low volume, Etsy's traffic usually wins. Once you sell steadily, the own-store column matters more.
Two habits help:
- Charge for extra text. First line included, back engraving as a paid add-on. Our guide to per-character pricing for engraving shows the setup.
- Charge for upgrades, not basics. A longer chain, gold vermeil, an extra disc or a premium box are easy add-ons. The base name belongs in the headline price.
On Shopify, PIMW Product Personalizer shows add-on fees as a separate cart line, so the customer sees "Back engraving +$8" clearly. Paid plans are $7.99, $13.99 or $24.99 a month with no per-sale fee, which keeps the math above predictable.
Build a product page that prevents mistakes

Most personalized jewellery problems start on the product page. A good page gets the text right before the order is placed, so you're not emailing customers to ask what they meant.
Show a live preview
Customers want to see their name on the piece before they pay, and people spot "Avaa" on a necklace faster than in a text box. PIMW Product Personalizer draws the text on your product photo as the customer types, with 35+ fonts and image swatches for metal colour or birthstone, on every Shopify plan.
Set character limits per field
Every engraving surface has a physical limit. Set it in the field and show it next to the box:
- Name necklace: "Name (max 9 letters, no numbers)"
- Bar front: "Name and date, max 12 characters, for example Ava 06.14.26"
- Coordinates: separate latitude and longitude fields, with an example in each
Limit and test your fonts
Offer three to five fonts you've engraved or cut at real size. Thin scripts lose detail on small pieces. Our list of the best fonts for engraved products is a good set to test.
Decide on order proofing
Proofing means emailing a mockup for approval before you engrave. It cuts errors but slows delivery. Many shops proof only solid gold or unusual orders and rely on the live preview for the rest. Either way, say it on the page: "We engrave exactly what you type. Check spelling and capitals."
Make sure the data reaches the bench
With a personalizer app, the text is saved on the order as line-item properties: Name: Ava, Font: Script, Metal: Silver. Place a test order and read the packing slip before launch. If you're choosing an app, our comparison of jewelry personalizer apps covers fonts, preview and pricing side by side.
Photography and mockups

Jewellery photos have one job: show size and engraving clearly. Shoot every product three ways:
- On a plain background. Sharp, true colour, using a light tent or a large diffused window.
- On a person. A bar necklace on a neck answers "how big is it" better than any measurement.
- In a gift context. In an open box next to a card, the way the buyer imagines handing it over.
Add a close-up of real engraving so people can judge depth and font, plus a ruler or coin for scale.
Show a sample name such as "Ava" in the main image, not a blank. With a live preview, the customer's own text replaces it as they type.
Build mockups from real photos of your piece, not generic stock, so colour and scale stay honest. Our guide to POD mockups and product photography covers lighting and backgrounds. And never show solid gold for a gold-plated product. That's a photo problem and a legal one.
Legal and trust: metal claims, hallmarks, returns
This is the section new sellers skip and the one that can close a shop. Follow the rules where your buyers are, not only where you are. This is general information, not legal advice.
United States: the FTC Jewelry Guides
The FTC's Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries (16 CFR Part 23) set out how you can describe metal:
- "Gold" on its own means 24 karat throughout. For anything less, put the karat first: "14K gold".
- Plated and filled gold must use at least 10 karat gold. "Gold filled" means the gold is at least 1/20th of the metal's weight.
- Gold electroplate means at least 0.175 microns of fine gold; "heavy gold electroplate" at least 2.5 microns.
- Vermeil means sterling silver coated with at least 10 karat gold, at least 2.5 microns thick.
- Sterling silver means at least 925 parts per thousand silver.
So a brass name necklace with a thin gold flash should be listed as "gold-plated brass" or "gold tone". If you sell children's jewellery in the US, check the CPSC's children's product rules on lead and testing first.
United Kingdom: hallmarking and personalised goods
Under the Hallmarking Act, you can't describe an item as gold, silver, platinum or palladium without a UK-approved hallmark unless it's under the weight exemption: 1 gram for gold, 7.78 grams for silver, 0.5 grams for platinum and 1 gram for palladium. Plated items can be described as plated, and precious metal dealers must display the approved dealer's notice.
Many silver bar necklaces and cuffs weigh more than 7.78 grams with the chain, so weigh the whole item.
The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give online buyers 14 days to cancel, but regulation 28(1)(b) removes that right for goods made to the consumer's specifications or clearly personalised. Faulty or misdescribed pieces still carry Consumer Rights Act 2015 remedies, so a misspelling you caused is your cost.
India: BIS hallmarking
The Bureau of Indian Standards runs mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery, rolled out district by district through Mandatory Hallmarking Orders. If you sell gold pieces, check the current BIS district list and exemptions, and make sure your workshop or supplier sends pieces for hallmarking.
For silver, plated or fashion pieces, describe the metal accurately and avoid wording that suggests gold content you don't have.
Write a clear personalised returns policy
Cover three cases: your mistake (free remake), a fault (remake or refund), and a change of mind (not accepted for personalized pieces, where the law allows). Put it on the product page, not only in the footer. Avoid "hypoallergenic" unless you can back it up; list the metals instead.
Packaging and gifting

Most personalized jewellery is bought for someone else, so the box is part of the product. Offer these at checkout:
- Gift box as standard. A rigid box with a pouch protects the chain and looks finished.
- Gift message card. A short text field with a limit, such as 200 characters.
- No prices in the parcel. Leave the invoice out when it ships to the recipient.
- Upgrades. A premium box, a ribbon or a second card for a set.
Our guide to adding a gift wrap option on Shopify shows how to price these as add-ons.
Thread the clasp through a slot in the card insert so chains can't tangle, add an anti-tarnish strip to silver orders, and include a care card for the metal you actually used.
Marketing around the gifting calendar
Your last safe order day is the occasion minus production time minus shipping. Publish it and count down to it.
| Occasion | When | Start promoting | Pieces that fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valentine's Day | February 14 | Early January | Initial necklaces, coordinates, couple bracelets |
| Mothering Sunday (UK) | Fourth Sunday of Lent, March | Mid February | Mom necklaces, birthstone pieces |
| Mother's Day (US, India) | Second Sunday of May | Early April | Family names, birthstones, mom discs |
| Graduation | May to June | April | Bar necklaces with the year, school coordinates |
| Father's Day | Third Sunday of June (US, UK) | May | Cufflinks, ID bracelets, dog tags |
| Wedding season | Summer in the US and UK; check local peak months in India | 6 to 8 weeks before | Bridesmaid sets, groomsmen cufflinks |
| Raksha Bandhan | August (date varies each year) | 4 weeks before | Name rakhi bracelets, sibling pieces |
| Diwali | October or November (date varies) | 4 to 6 weeks before | Gold and silver pendants, family pieces |
| Christmas | December 25 | October | Every best seller, gift sets |
Our Mother's Day POD guide has timing notes that apply to jewellery too.
Indian buyers often expect INR pricing and cash on delivery, so test both on your checkout. If you sell from India on Shopify, our list of the best personalizer for India stores covers INR pricing.
Short video works best: the engraving being done, the name appearing on the piece, an unboxing. Film your own process. A dropship competitor can't copy it.
Collect emails at checkout and send reminders before the next occasion. Someone who bought a mom necklace in May is a good fit for a grandmother version in December.
Scaling without drowning in remakes
Growth breaks personalized jewellery shops in predictable ways:
- Typos you can't trace. Use separate fields per line so the order shows exactly what to engrave.
- Too many fonts. Cut the ones nobody picks.
- Variants for every option. Keep variants for metal and size, and use personalization fields and add-ons for the rest.
- No batch workflow. Engrave all silver bars in one run, then all gold.
- Late cutoffs. Set holiday cutoffs early and close personalization on items you can't make in time.
- Supplier drift. Check the first piece from every new batch for plating colour and chain quality.
If part of your range is print-on-demand, PIMW Product Personalizer connects with Printful, Printify and Gelato, so orders reach the provider with the customer's text attached.
For a larger catalog, our pick for the best Shopify jewelry personalizer lays out which features matter once you're past a handful of products.
Your launch checklist
- Pick four to six products, each tied to an occasion and a clear text field.
- Choose a production model and order samples of every piece and finish.
- Engrave your shortlisted fonts at real size on real metal. Keep three to five.
- Measure each engraving area and set a character limit per field.
- Weigh finished pieces and check hallmarking rules for every country you ship to.
- Write metal descriptions that match the FTC Guides, UK hallmarking or BIS rules.
- Cost every line, including fees and remakes, and price extras as add-ons.
- Photograph each piece on white, on a person, in a gift box and in close-up.
- Build product pages with a live preview, per-field limits and a "we engrave exactly what you type" note.
- Publish a personalised returns policy on each product page.
- Set up gift box, message card and gift receipt options.
- Place a test order and read the text on the order, packing slip and supplier dashboard.
- Note your next three occasion cutoffs and plan content for each.
- Review remakes and support emails weekly and fix whatever caused them.
Start small, get the text right on every order, and describe your metal honestly. Everything else gets easier from there.
Frequently asked questions
Is selling personalized jewelry profitable?
It can be, because buyers pay more for a piece with a name or date on it. Profit depends on your production model and channel fees. In our illustrative example, a $58 engraved silver bar necklace left about $23 on Etsy and about $27 on an own store before ads and plan costs. Run the numbers with your own costs.
What personalized jewellery sells best online?
Gift-led pieces with a short, clear piece of text: name and initial necklaces, engraved bar necklaces and bracelets, birthstone pieces, coordinates jewellery, mom and family necklaces, and men's pieces such as cufflinks and ID bracelets.
Do I need to make the jewellery myself?
No. You can make it yourself with stamping or engraving, partner with a local jeweller or workshop, use print-on-demand or jewellery fulfilment suppliers, or buy white-label pieces. Order samples and check the metal and plating before you list anything.
Is it better to sell personalized jewelry on Etsy or Shopify?
Etsy brings gift buyers already searching for personalized pieces, but at the time of writing you pay a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing on each sale. Your own Shopify store has lower per-sale fees and structured personalization fields, but you bring the traffic. Many sellers use both.
Can I call gold-plated jewellery gold?
Not on its own. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides in the US, 'gold' alone means 24 karat, and plated or filled items must say so and use at least 10 karat gold. In the UK, you can't describe an item as gold unless it's hallmarked or under the 1 gram exemption, though plated items can be described as plated.
Do I need a hallmark to sell silver jewellery in the UK?
Yes, if the item weighs 7.78 grams or more and you describe it as silver. Below that weight it's exempt. The weight is for the whole item, so check bar necklaces and cuffs with the chain included.
Can customers return personalized jewellery?
In the UK, the 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations doesn't apply to clearly personalised goods, but faulty or misdescribed pieces still have Consumer Rights Act remedies. Elsewhere, set and publish your own policy, usually a free remake for your mistakes and no change-of-mind returns where the law allows.
Is BIS hallmarking mandatory for online jewellery sellers in India?
Mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery applies in districts notified under BIS Mandatory Hallmarking Orders, and it has been expanded in phases. If you sell gold pieces, check the current BIS district list and exemptions, and make sure your workshop or supplier sends pieces for hallmarking.
