Printful handles the printing and shipping. Your Shopify product options decide what the customer picks: size and color as variants, plus personal details such as a name, a photo or a font through a personalizer. The integration works when those two layers line up, so each order reaches Printful with the right blank and the right custom details. Here's how to set it up and where it usually goes wrong.
Setup
- Install the Printful app from the Shopify App Store.
- Connect your Printful account and confirm your billing and shipping settings inside Printful.
- Import Printful products into Shopify, or map existing Shopify products to Printful catalog items and variants.
- Turn on automatic order import so new orders go to Printful without you copying them over.
- Install PIMW Product Personalizer for the personalization layer and follow the Connect Printful help article so personalized orders carry the buyer's details to production.
- Place a test order for each product type and check the result in your Printful dashboard before you launch.
Variant mapping
Each Shopify variant maps to one Printful catalog product and variant. For example, Shopify's "Small / Red" on your tee maps to Printful's "Bella+Canvas 3001, Small, Red." If you import products from Printful, the mapping is done for you. If you built the product in Shopify first, you'll map each variant on first setup.
Only use variants for choices that change the blank: size, color, material. Everything else, like a name, a font or a photo, belongs in the personalizer. A shirt with 5 sizes and 6 colors is 30 variants to map. Add 10 font choices as variants and you'd have 300, every one needing a Printful mapping. Keep fonts and text out of variants.
Personalization via line-item properties
PIMW Product Personalizer saves what the buyer entered (text, font, uploaded photo, and the print file reference) on the order as line-item properties. Those details stay attached to the exact line they belong to, so a two-shirt order with two different names never gets mixed up. Our help center setup guide shows how the personalized order reaches Printful and what to check in your dashboard.
Which options to offer on Printful products
| Product | Variants (mapped to Printful) | Personalization fields (PIMW Product Personalizer) |
|---|---|---|
| T-shirt | Size, color | Name or slogan text, font picker, optional back text |
| Mug | Size (11 oz, 15 oz) | Name, photo upload (Pro plan), font |
| Poster | Size | Photo upload, caption text |
| Embroidered hat | Color | Short text with a character limit, thread color swatch |
Text fields, the font picker, swatches and live preview are available on lower plans. Photo and logo upload start on Pro at $13.99/month.
Worked example: a custom name mug
A store sells an 11 oz and 15 oz mug through Printful. In Shopify there are just two variants, one per size, each mapped to the matching Printful mug. PIMW Product Personalizer adds a "Name (up to 14 characters)" field, a font picker limited to six fonts, and live preview on the mug photo. A $3 fee applies if the buyer adds a second line, and it shows as its own cart line. When the order comes in, the name, font and print file travel with the line, and Printful prints and ships it. Two variants to map instead of dozens.
Common mistakes
- Unmapped variants. A new color added in Shopify but not mapped in Printful means orders for that color sit unprocessed. Check after every product edit.
- Low-resolution uploads. A 600 px phone screenshot looks fine on screen and blurry on a poster. Set minimum upload sizes and see Printful's file guidelines.
- Skipping the test order. One test order per product type catches mapping and file problems before a customer does.
- Personalization as variants. It inflates your variant count and your mapping work for no benefit.

Fyul context
Printful and Printify now sit under the Fyul parent brand. They're still separate Shopify apps, and the way you connect Printful to your store hasn't changed. Our Fyul merger explainer covers what changed and what didn't.
Frequently asked questions
How to integrate Shopify options with Printful?
Install the Printful app, connect your account, and map each Shopify variant to a Printful catalog variant. Turn on automatic order import, then add personalization fields with an app like PIMW Product Personalizer and place a test order.
Does Printful support personalization line-item properties?
PIMW Product Personalizer saves the buyer's text, font and print file on the order as line-item properties, which fulfillment partners can read. Follow the Printful setup guide in our help center to connect the two and confirm with a test order.
How to map variants to Printful?
Products imported from Printful come mapped. For products built in Shopify, match each Shopify variant to the right Printful product and variant during first setup, and recheck after adding new colors or sizes.
Automatic fulfillment via Printful?
Yes. With automatic order import on, new orders go to Printful for printing and shipping without manual copying. You can also hold orders for review if you prefer to check personalized ones first.
Printful pricing on Shopify?
The Printful app is free to install. You pay Printful for each item printed plus shipping, and you set your own retail price in Shopify.
Multiple POD partners on one Shopify store?
Yes. You can send some products to Printful and others to Printify or Gelato. The help article on routing products to different POD partners explains the setup.
Printful vs Printify?
Printful prints in its own facilities, which many sellers pick for consistency. Printify works with a network of print providers, which gives more product and price choice. Our Printful vs Printify comparison goes deeper.
Print file quality requirements?
Aim for a PNG at 300 DPI at the final print size, in sRGB. Check Printful's guidelines for each product, since print areas differ.
